07. Grocery Store

One thing that I hated doing the most was shopping, especially in a grocery store. I could say that I had never hated it a lot during my childhood, after all, I wasn't the one who was shopping. Standing on the front lower part of a shopping cart as my aunt would push it, was fun, but not now when I was having to do the shopping myself.

I had been pushing this squeaky, shopping cart around for almost half an hour, trying to find an organic coconut milk that my aunt usually used in her coffee since she was lactose intolerant. I know I probably should've asked someone for help, but I kind of had this weird social anxiety attack when having to talk to hot dudes. And yes, there were many of them.

Pushing this shopping cart around was getting annoying and I was dying to get the heck out of here, so I had decided to gather up the courage to ask one of the hot workers, who was about ten feet away, where this stupid milk was.

Each step I took was painstakingly hard. My steps were slow and I kept looking around the area, hoping that I could spot any organic coconut milk so that I wouldn't have to ask this blond-haired dude with small, silver earrings anything.

Suddenly, I heard someone jumping with their flip-flops hitting the concrete floor softly and cursing under their breath. I turned my head to see that it was a short girl, who looked my age, with short red hair, jumping up to try and reach the top shelf.

"Oh, my fucking gosh!" she cursed, trying to stretch her hand up while jumping to grab her product. "Why the fuck do I have to be so freaking short?"

I spun my cart around and walked over to the girl. "Hey, do you need any help?" I asked her, glad that her situation had managed to stop me from talking to that guy.

She looked at me and had let out a long, deep sigh. "I thought that was quite obvious to everyone," she said with a tint of meanness in her tone, but I brushed it off.

Always be kind and not show the same attitude as the other, I told myself, not wanting to show her my wrong side.

I smiled at her almost fakely and asked, "What were you trying to grab?"

"Hot Cheetos," she said, pointing at them.

While I grabbed them for her, she looked at me with almost a scrutinizing gaze. I handed over her Cheetos and she took them gladly, throwing them into her cart.

"Thanks," she said with a small smile. "You don't look like the type to actually help someone after they speak to you like I just did."

"You're welcome. And yeah, I wouldn't have helped you, but I did," I said to her and her smile widened.

"What's it like?" she asked, and I raised an eyebrow. "Up there?"

I laughed when I finally figured out that she was talking about my height. "It's nice...?" I said almost like a question. "I really don't know how to answer your question."

She had let out a loud laugh, "I was just kidding. I just wanted to see your reaction! My name is Ruby, what's yours?"

"Chloe," I said to her.

Ruby suddenly pulled out her phone. "Ya know, you seem like a pretty cool person," she complimented me and I laughed to myself. If she called helping someone out cool, then I wondered, why did I not have any friends? I could say I had friends, but they were all in college and didn't even bother to give their old friend, Chloe, a call.

"What's your number?" Ruby asked.

I pulled out my phone and gave her my number while she gave me hers as well.

"Chloe..." she said as she typed my name and saved my number. She grinned as she looked up at me, "Great. I'll be sure to give you a call, new friend."

"When did I even say we were friends...?" I said, letting out a small laugh.

"Oh, I thought that by you giving me your number, we would be friends... but I guess not..." she said with a small frown.

"No, I didn't mean it like that!" I said, almost too quickly.

I was kind of desperate for someone to talk to. Sure, I had my aunt as someone close, but having her as the only one I could talk to, felt... well, how was I supposed to put this? Not the same way as a teenage friendship.

"I thought so," she smiled widely and I couldn't help but smile too. "I can say that you're finished shopping because your cart is packed!"

I looked at my cart and noticed that she was right, it was just that organic coconut milk I needed.

"Actually, I'm not finish shopping. I just need help finding one last thing," I said to Ruby, looking behind me to see that the worker had left.

"What do you need help finding? I can help you!" she said and I smiled at her gratefully as I told her what I needed to find.

It turned out that it was in the 'can products' aisle all along and that I hadn't been looking quite well for it as Ruby found it easily. I mentally face-palmed myself for that because I could've been out of here a long time ago.

But, at the same time, I wouldn't have met Ruby.

Minutes later, Ruby and I cashed out our groceries and walked outside with our carts. It turned out that Ruby was waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up, so I decided to keep her company until he got here.

"So, do you have a boyfriend?" Ruby asked.

I swallowed hard. Me? A boyfriend? Ha! Funny...

"Nope," I replied to her question and she looked at me with wide eyes.

"You're lying! And is probably just fucking with me..." she said and I laughed. "Like, seriously, if I was a boy, I'd literally be dating you right now."

Ruby seriously didn't know how to filter her words. Neither did I, in some cases, but this girl spoke it aloud and didn't even care. So, when I saw a mother covering her daughter's ears from Ruby's words, I stifled a laugh.

"Um, okay...?" I said and looked away awkwardly.

"You're so pretty that it's almost unbelievable, especially with those hazel eyes of yours." she looked down at her phone when it vibrated in her hand and started typing. "My boyfriend's here."

A sleek, black car revved loudly as it stopped in front of us. We both stood up from the bench that we were sitting on and hugged each other. "Bye, Chlo! I'll text you soon," Ruby hugged me tightly as if we'd never see each other again.

"Bye, Ruby," I said casually, and she walked away to the black car while I started walking to my car—wait, no, let me rephrase that—my aunt's car.

I always had wished to have my own car, but I knew that'd never happen because I was not in a steady job that could help me pay for my insurance or even buy one since Janet wasn't able to.

I slammed the trunk door of the car when I finished packing the groceries inside and walked to the driver's side of the car, hopping in.

Driving away from the grocery store, I turned on the radio and started singing along to the songs that were playing while I drove in the dark night.

Today went pretty well, even though the babysitting job didn't go so well... But, at least I could say I met a new friend—well, I hoped so!
