06. Babysitting

"Ugh! Drive faster, you sloth!" I yelled while honking at the car in front of me. "I can't be late for this new job!"

Driving was something that I loved to do, but sometimes, it just wasn't... especially when driving behind someone who didn't know how to drive faster.

Again, I woke up late, forgetting to set my alarm to wake me up. You must be wondering, why the heck did this always have to happen to me? Well... I was someone who slept almost as if I was dead. Someone could break into the apartment that I lived in—my aunt not at home, but out somewhere—and steal everything that we owned and I wouldn't wake up one bit... even if they broke a glass cup in the kitchen.

Okay, maybe I was exaggerating a little, but I just always slept without a care, and now that there were ten minutes before the clock would hit 8, I didn't think that I would get past this sloth of a driver.

I saw that there was a lane where I could cut through and in front of the person. We were driving in the middle lane, so that meant that there was both a left lane and a right lane on either side of us. I looked in the rearview mirror to see if anyone was coming. Seeing that no-one was coming, I spun the wheel and drove into the right lane.

Just before I went to drive in front of the person who was driving slowly, I caught a glimpse of who it was. I suddenly felt pure regret for what I said when I saw that it was an elderly lady. Her eyes were glued to the road ahead of her, driving slowly and carefully.

Though I felt bad for what I said and all, I still didn't get why there were old people driving on the roads! I mean, I was not thinking rude or anything, but they should stop driving and go sit down with their grandkids or partner.

I had let out a sigh as I drove ahead of her, heading to the location of the house I would be babysitting at with the help of the GPS, seeing that there were only five minutes left.

Finally, I reached my destination. I parked the car just to the side of the road and hopped out of it, walking on the pathway that leads to the door of the house.

I rang the doorbell three times—all at once. I know, probably was not so polite. I just wanted to get started with the day... and also, I might've just wanted to do that for fun.

I waited for about a minute and some seconds before the door opened, revealing a young woman with straight, blonde hair and blue eyes and she was holding a baby in her arms.

"Chloe," she said softly with a smile, rocking the little girl, who was asleep, carefully and slowly.

If her child could sleep soundly like that for the whole time that I'd be babysitting her, then my day would go perfectly fine and I wouldn't get fired.

"Hello, Angie," I said, smiling brightly.

"Come on in," she told me and I walked inside her home to see how amazing it was.

Angie's home was pretty... rich but felt homely at the same time. I noticed an aesthetic of grey as I walked further into her home. The couches, carpet, and chairs were all of a grey color, even the curtains that were draped over the windows. The only color difference that I saw was with the wood—that was a dark brown—and the little items added.

This family probably likes dark colors, I thought to myself. But I don't blame them, I love dark colors, too.

Angie led me to the kitchen and showed me the kind of foods that I was to feed Bethany, I learned the name of her daughter while she spoke about her. Then, I walked through a hall that had led to two bedrooms, one of them being of Bethany's. Angie showed me Bethany's room that—unlike the rest of the house—was decorated with bright colors.

"Well, this is all you need to know. It's now time for me to head to work," Angie said as she placed Bethany into her crib.

I smiled at her, "Yes, thank you for giving me this job. I'll take good care of Bethany."

"Goodbye, my little sunshine," she cooed at her daughter with a kiss on her cheek before replying to me with a smile, "Good. Bye, hun."

With that, she walked out of the room.

I stood awkwardly by the door, not knowing what to do.

I started to think that maybe my assumptions about how this babysitting job would go were wrong as I watched Bethany sleep peacefully, lost in her own little world.

A small smile appeared on my face as I thought to myself, I'm finally going to have a permanent job! Yay!

Seeing that Bethany wasn't going to wake up anytime soon, I decided to go sit on a couch in the living room and relax by going on my phone. My phone was starting to get a little boring, so I then decided to sleep for a bit and maybe wake up before it was time to feed Bethany.

I woke up to the loud noise of someone crying.

For a moment, I forgot where I was since I was just waking up from a short slumber and my brain had to adjust a bit, but when it did, I shot straight up in the couch and looked at the time on my phone.

10:01 am.

Oh, no, I said with panic in my head. Oh-freaking-no!

I've literally slept for like, two hours, meaning that I haven't fed poor Bethany her food at 8:30 am.

Oh, gosh...

I got up from the couch and headed straight for the kitchen in such a hurry that I almost tripped over my own feet. I looked at the list on the fridge—fixed with a magnet—that had the types of food with certain times I was supposed to feed Bethany. The closest time I could find was 9:40 am. The time was like twenty minutes ago, but I believed it would do.

Quickly, I opened the fridge and took out the baby food that was oatmeal and left the kitchen—of course, not before getting a spoon.

I rushed to the crying baby's room and opened the door to hear her cries even louder.

I felt heartbroken inside, sad that I did this. If only I hadn't slept without a care—like I always do—this wouldn't have happened. Bethany wouldn't have been crying like she was right now.

I was so fucked up, it was unreal.

I had set the food down with the spoon on a nearby chair and walked over to Bethany's crib. When she saw me, she stopped crying and only let out soft sobs. I smiled at her and reached down to lift her into my arms.

She was either heavy or my laziness was starting to kick in, even though I was lazy 24/7.

Using one hand, I picked up her food along with the spoon and sat down in the chair carefully with her still in my other arm. Phew! Wouldn't want to drop her, would I?

While I sat down and fed Bethany her oatmeal, I noticed how strikingly beautiful she was, just like her mom. She looked like a baby goddess with Goldilocks' hair and her eyes, they were crystal blue and mesmerizing, like I could stare into them forever.

After I finished feeding Bethany, the rest of the day went by... smoothly? I didn't know how to put it. Why? Because I made a lot of mistakes, such as, of course, sleeping and waking up late to feed her and also forgetting to bathe her—this is where I hoped her mother didn't notice, because I made sure to change her into a different outfit.

I was so bad at this.

My first day as a babysitter was now over and now, I was driving home quietly. I should've probably turned the radio on like any normal teenager/young adult would, but the silence felt nice... After all, I didn't get much of that.

I heard my phone make a buzzing sound on the passenger seat. I knew not to look at my phone while driving because who would want to get into a car accident and die? Not me, of course. So, I waited until I had to stop at a red light before checking who had messaged me.

I was not famous where I would get a text every minute, so when checking my phone to see that it was my aunt who had texted me about going grocery shopping, I wasn't surprised at all.

I sighed when I saw the long list of groceries Janet had sent me to buy. Noticing that the light had changed to green, I drove off and asked Siri for the closest grocery store in the area.
