05. Job Hunting
As Janet and I finished eating our breakfast, we—more like I—headed straight to the most important topic of the day: job hunting.
Janet had given me a list of five numbers, not even bothering to sit with me as I tried to find a job like I thought she would. They were all jobs that didn't really require any degree of the sort. They were more like jobs that required a high school diploma, or something that was more on my level of education.
The first job on the list was babysitting. Okay, so, I didn't have any experience with such a job like that... so it wasn't really a job I wanted to go for. Though it seemed like something different from the other job I did at Happy Cafe, so I was a bit curious about how it'd go.
I made babysitting my first choice of jobs to check out.
The four other jobs were all just the same. Cashier, cashier, cashier, and... cashier.
I mean, why had Janet chosen these jobs when I'd literally just gotten fired from one for the same position? Like, put some sense into it... It was just not what I was good at!
I sighed, getting up from the couch and walked towards Janet's room. I rapped three times on her door and waited for her to answer. She answered and I opened her door to see her sitting on her bed, looking at some paper works.
Janet was a teacher at an elementary school where she'd teach second graders, so you know she wasn't really getting paid that much money.
Don't get me wrong here, though. At least she had a job.
"What is it, Chloe?" she asked, looking up from the stapled papers in her hand and the laptop that was to the side of her.
"I've chosen a job that I want to try out..." I told her, walking over to her bed and sat at the edge.
"And...?" she asked.
"Babysitting," I said and mentally cringed.
Though I wanted to try out this job, I so didn't know if I was good at it. And here I go with my what ifs—
What if it was a teenage girl, who was going through with her emo phase? I mean, don't get me wrong, I went through that too, but I didn't think I would've been able to handle her. What if I had to take care of a baby, who cried a lot because he or she hated me? Oh, gosh... That would've definitely been a struggle. Or, what if I had to take care of a toddler, who had a teenage brother my age? Oof, that would've been hella cliche!
So many what ifs went through my mind, I almost felt dizzy.
"You chose something different, that's great," Janet smiled at me. "This person who's in need of a babysitter is actually my friend, Angie. She had a babysitter, but the babysitter had to move out of California and to another state. So I think she'd be happy to know that you're taking up the job as her four months old daughter's babysitter."
Again, I cringed. A baby? Even the what if with the emo teenager sounded better to me.
"Okay," I said, simply, even though I had so many thoughts running through my mind. I already knew that something was sure as hell going to go wrong.
"Okay... Give her a call," she said and I took out my phone to dial the number.
The phone ringed one... two... three times before Angie answered the phone. "Hello," she said.
"Hello, hi. Um... My name is Chloe, Janet's niece— " I said, but got cut off quickly before I could even add a dot to finish my sentence.
"Yes, yes. Janet spoke to me about you," she said to me in a rush. "Are you calling about the job to babysit?"
"Yes, I am," I said.
"Okay, you can come over to my house tomorrow and you can right away start with your job the same day," she said way too eagerly, almost as if taking care of her child was a lot to handle.
"Yes, of course," I said, looking over at a smiling Janet.
"Okay, hun. I'll send you my address and be here by 8 am. Thanks for the call," she said and hanged up the phone before I could even reply.
"So...?" Janet asked, smiling widely. "What did she say?"
"I got the job," I said, not as excited as Janet was. "And also that I should be there tomorrow by 8 am."
"That's great, Chloe," she said, putting a hand on my shoulder and massaged it a bit. "Now, you must be so tired after both looking through my list of numbers and searching the internet for jobs, that you're probably needing your beauty sleep right now."
I didn't search the internet, I said to myself.
"Yes, I am in need of my beauty sleep," I told her, which was definitely true. Yeah, I didn't search the internet, but I contemplated very hard on which job I wanted and we all know how tiring it is to think about something... Well, I did.
"Well, you should go get some sleep," Janet said, and I got off her bed. "Goodnight, sweetheart. By the way, you can take the car tomorrow since it's the weekend and I don't really have anywhere to go. And also, I'm sorry I didn't do our job hunting together... It's just that I had to finish grading these students' works."
"Okay, and that's alright. I understand completely," I said and left her room.
I was so happy I got to take the car with me tomorrow or else I would've had to take an Uber. I mean, though I was lazy, I found driving a car fun.
