04. Weird

I woke up to the loud ringing of my alarm and sat up to turn it off.

It turned out that I forgot to delete the alarm that I had set to wake me up every morning for work. And now that I had gotten fired, my alarm won't be needed until I found another job.

I sighed, deleting my alarm and setting my phone back down. Holding the blanket, I moved my body deep under it and pulled a pillow with me as I settled comfortably into my own ball, closing my eyes. Lucky for me, I didn't have to say 'just five more minutes'.

Well, I wasn't that lucky.

I almost fell back asleep when I heard someone knock three times on the door. Of course, I didn't get up that easily. I still stayed snuggled up under the blanket, not feeling the need to move an inch.

I listened carefully for a few seconds for the door to be knocked on again, but no-one knocked again so I closed my eyes and thought that it was just in my imagination.

I was wrong.

"Chloe?!" I heard Janet's voice call out. I took a tight hold onto my blanket, not wanting it to be real, just so that I could fall back asleep... But she continued to call my name and knock on the door, loudly.

Getting up, I threw the blanket off me with a loud groan. Rubbing my eyes, I walked over to the door and opened it to see Janet standing there with a bright smile. I've gotta say, she sounded pretty angry while being annoying as she called for me to open the door, but now she just looked... happy.

I think my life had taken a sudden turn.

I yawned, covering my mouth so that she wasn't able to smell my morning breath. "What's got you in a chirpy mood?" I asked, scratching my head. I didn't think I ever looked nice waking up in the morning. My hair was always messy with dried up drool on my face. Yeah, I know, not so pretty.

"Goodmorning, Chloe," she started, smiling at me. "It's just that it's such a nice, sunny day where we could start job hunting. So, we'll get started right away... Well, once you get dressed into something else and we eat breakfast, of course."

Ugh, I totally forgot about this whole 'job hunting' thing, but I didn't show any signs as I just smiled at her and said, "Okay." I closed the door as she turned away and leaned my back against the door, running a hand through my long brown hair.

I didn't know if it was me, but ever since last night, I noticed how Janet's whole personality had changed. She was no longer the type who stayed angry at me for long, she actually softened up. I think it was because of this 'Alphonso Garcia' dude. Weird, but I was happy that she was changing... a bit.

I headed straight for the bathroom when I noticed that I was standing too long at the door. As I entered the bathroom, I freshened up by brushing my teeth and washing my face. I wasn't the type of person to bathe in the mornings. After I was finished with the bathroom, I went over to the closet to pick out my clothes and got dressed in a simple outfit; a black tank top with blue ripped jeans and a pair of white ankle socks.

I didn't do much with my hair as I just brushed it out and tied it up into a messy bun and walked out of my room.

The smell of pancakes quickly filled my senses as I made my way to the dining room. Janet was standing in the kitchen, in front of the stove, making pancakes. I watched as she finished making a pancake and set it on top of another on a plate.

Ever since I started middle school, she had stopped making me breakfast in the mornings because work became a hassle for her and I had to eat breakest at school—which I so didn't like. But now, seeing her as she hummed to a tune I couldn't recognize and continued to make a few more pancakes, there was one question in my mind and it was—

What the actual hell?

"Oh, hey," she said, turning around and walked over to set a plate of pancakes on the dining table.

"W-what are you doing?" I asked in shock.

"Making our breakfast, that's what I'm doing," she said to me with a smile and set a cup of tea to the side of the plate. "Enjoy your breakfast."

I pulled out the chair and sat down in it to start eating the pancakes, of course, not before adding syrup to it. It tasted delicious, but I didn't think about that... Instead, I thought about how weird Janet was acting.

"How is it?" Janet asked as she sat down at the table with me. I didn't even notice.

"Oh, good..." I said and she smiled, digging into her own plate of food. "You're acting so weird... Not weird, but... so different."

"In what way?" she asked, taking a sip of her coffee. I was never a coffee person, but a tea addict. I had no idea what it tasted like... I just didn't like it, especially the smell.

I had set my fork and knife down and took the cup of tea into my hand to take a few drinks from it. "The way you seem happy all of a sudden... Is it because of Alphonso? You're making me breakfast, something you haven't done in so long! To me, it's like you're making a sudden change and I like it, but, on the other hand, it's just weird to me," I said once I had set my tea back down and looked at her.

She looked at me a bit shocked. "Oh, Chloe," she said, setting her utensils down, making me get all her attention. "I didn't know this would have such an effect on you. It's not because of Alphonso... We're just starting to get to know each other, so it wouldn't be because of him. I just thought that maybe I was being a bit too not motherly to you and I just wanted to change... So, I did."

"It doesn't have an effect on me," I smiled, looking her in the eyes. "I guess you changing is kind of making me miss your former self and so it's kind of hard for me to get used to your new self. But don't get me wrong! I'm starting to like this new you."

"I'm glad. Let's get back to eating. Remember we have job hunting to do," she said with a smile and started eating, again.

I nodded, feeling a bit different—like I was starting to like the thought of finding a new job with Janet, now that she was starting to change.
