Bargaining
Martha is walking down the hallway to her research space in a hospital. Samara walks up.
"Hey." Samara offers.
"Hey." Martha returns.
"Your next volunteer is in room 213. He's prepped and ready."
"Thanks."
"How's your brother?" inquires Samara.
"Stubborn."
"So, he's fine then?" jokes Samara.
"As fine as someone who almost died can be."
"I thought you said he was cleared." wonders Samara.
"According to his doctor." Martha comes back with.
"Isn't that a good thing?"
"I wouldn't have cleared him."
"Which is exactly why they don't let doctors treat their own family." suggests Samara.
"It's not just his physical health I'm worried about. I think he's in denial."
"About what?"
"Well for one thing, he doesn't want to acknowledge how much pain he's in." declares Martha.
"So? You remember when he was in that car accident a few years ago? He kept insisting that he was fine to go back to work."
"And because of that, he ended up with a bone fracture and sent back to the hospital for 3 months. I don't want to see him do that to himself again." says Martha with obvious concern.
"You know Elias would never let that happen."
"Yeah, and Russ knows it too, which is why he's going to find a way around El."
"And there's nothing you can do about it except tell him you told him so when it happens."
A moment passes between them as they continue down the hall, close to the upcoming room.
"I guess you're right."
Martha enters room 213. Inside is Taylor Morley, 30.
"How are we doing today?"

Lazarus is looking through a particular file. Elias is talking to another detective.
"You're sure this guy is good?" Elias asks.
"Trust me, if you're looking for someone with his ear to the ground in that neighbourhood? He's the C.I. to talk to. He's a little finicky though. Doesn't like to talk to people he doesn't know. But you give him my name, he should be okay." insists the detective.
"Thanks man."
The detective walks away.
"Hey El?" inquires Lazarus, trying to get Elias' attention.
"Yeah Russ?"
"When did they put in the new card system for the subway?"
"2011 I think."
"And they phased out cash payments by 2012 right?" asks Lazarus for confirmation.
"From what I remember. Why?"
"Suspicious death case that went nowhere. M.E. couldn't determine cause of death. Detective on it couldn't find a motive for murder but one of the witnesses gave him a bad feeling. The brother? He said that he found his sister dead around midnight. His statement says that he took the subway home but there's no log for when his card was swiped." explains Lazarus.
"Well the system was buggy back then. Maybe they couldn't get the record?"
A moment passes as Lazarus looks through the files in front of him, "I'm gonna go talk to the guy."
Lazarus strains to get up.
"Whoa, isn't that a little extreme? You're supposed to be on desk duty." Elias says, getting up to meet Lazarus.
"It's like you said, the system was buggy."
"They've done a lot of upgrading. You could just have the record pulled again."
"And if it doesn't turn anything up?"
"Then we'll go talk to him... together." insists Elias.
"Okay."
A moment passes.
"Okay?" questions Elias.
"I said okay." insists Lazarus, clearly frustrated.
"Hey El?" the detective Elias was talking to before is on the phone at the other end of the room.
"Yeah?"
"He wants to talk to you."
Elias looks at Lazarus for a while before turning to the detective, "Be right there."
Elias walks away towards the detective. Lazarus picks up his cane.

Elias comes back to Lazarus' desk to find him gone.
"Damn it Russ."
