19 - Veer
Veer's POV
The first thing which I experienced as soon as I regained my consciousness was a sharp pain in my chest. I opened my eyes and found myself in a comfy bed. My first thought was - I am alive! My injuries were partially treated and they didn't hurt as much. There was a particularly deep wound on my chest which was hurting as hell. Other than that, I was fine. I was patched up with bandages around my chest and arms. I blinked a few times and opened my eyes wider. Considering the injuries, it was a miracle that I had survived.
This place was familiar. Too familiar. Where was- Ah! I recognized this place. It was the medical room of Soma Sangha. But, I had no recollection of how I got here. This room explains the miraculous recovery. The only thing I remember was asking a girl for help. Was I rescued by a mage? I was lucky that someone found me, otherwise....I don't even want to imagine the consequences.
I tried to get up when I heard a voice.
"If I were you, I wouldn't be in such a hurry to get up young man."
It was the association's head, Bhargav ji. Oh, How much I missed that scowl.
"I missed you too old man. So, how long has it been since we last met?"
There was humour in my voice and judging by his expressions, he was not happy about it. How delightful. Getting on his nerves was my favourite hobby and honestly, I never got bored of it.
"If my memory serves correctly, it has been almost 6 months. We last met in Som Nagari at the yearly festival."
"Yes, you were the 'special guest' over there. How can I forget." I sighed dramatically.
"And how can I forget that you caused quite a lot of trouble that day!"
"Umm...Let's not dwell on the past."
I gave him a goofy grin and he glared at me. It made me laugh and his frown deepened. Always such a predictable response.
"I heard the sound of laughter and instantly knew that you were awake."
I saw Shobha ji entering the room. My supporter and protector. Her presence was a welcoming change which I needed when faced with Bhargav ji's anger.
"Shobha ji, please ask your husband to stop glaring at me. It's scary." I pouted.
"No one can trouble my son as long as I am here." She patted my head lovingly.
Both of us laughed. This association always felt like a second home to me. Despite being a non mage, they never made me feel like an outsider. They felt like family.
"I know you are trying to lighten the mood Veer but seriously what happened? You almost died and we have no clue what went down," there was concern in her eyes which immediately sobered me up.
"The traitors were planning a conspiracy against Somapura. I discovered the truth and they planned to kill me", I said casually. A shock registered on their faces.
"It's a long story actually. I'll tell you in detail once I get better. Don't worry so much. Look at me, I'm fine." They were not convinced but they decided to drop it.
"In the meantime, can you allow me to stay here for a little while? At least until I hatch a plan?"
"You are welcome to stay here as long as you want." I beamed at his response. This is what I needed for time-being, a safe haven. A place where I can peacefully gauge the situation and plan my future steps.
"And, I also wanted to meet my saviour. Is that possible?" I owe my life to her so I had to meet her. I wanted to thank her in person.
"The girl who saved you is my niece. Her name is Laxita. I'll call her here so that you could meet her."
"Thank you, Shobha ji."
That name...Is she the same person I used to know?
I still remember those honey brown eyes vividly....
Laxita's POV
"He is asking for you, sister." Devansh informed me.
"Who?"
"Brother Veer. He says he wants to meet you. He's in the medical room and they have asked me to bring you over there."
The person whom I saved last night wants to meet me. It's a good thing because I was also curious about him. What was his relationship with the association? He's not a mage, I figured. And also, that name rings a bell. It's strangely familiar. Where have I heard it before?
"We have to leave right now sister." I nodded and followed him.
When I reached the room, I could hear some voices. It was my aunt. She was talking to someone. Is that Veer's voice?
"....you give me far too much credit..."
He was talking to my aunt. When I entered, I could see my aunt's back and Veer's face....
As soon as I saw him, my eyes widened and my jaw dropped. There's no way that he's real. He was handsome. Way too handsome. I have never seen anyone this good-looking. I thought Nakul was handsome but Veer, my oh my, I just can't describe his beauty, if that's even the right word. I couldn't see him properly last night as he was covered in blood and dirt but now that he was visible, I am at a loss of words. Those deep and beautiful dark brown eyes, sharp jaw, easy and charming smile and not to talk about that muscular body, it was doing something to my insides. He had a neatly trimmed beard and shoulder length hair. Was my reaction normal? I am pretty sure my mouth is still hanging open.
Veer
Devansh nudged me from the side. "Sister, you are staring at him."
I picked up my jaw from the floor and headed towards him. He smiled as soon as he saw me. That smile was so cute, gosh!
"Ah! My niece is here. Laxu, this is Veer and Veer this is Laxita. She saved your life yesterday."
As soon as he saw me, his eyes flashed with an emotion which I couldn't place. It was just for a moment and then it vanished but I noticed it.
He smiled at me and said, "Thank you for saving me. I owe my life to you." That deep and rich voice was doing something to me. This man was literally every woman's fantasy.
"You don't have to, it was my duty to save someone in danger." I was flustered.
"Not everyone would risk their lives to save a stranger. You have a kind heart and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart."
I shrugged and gave a small smile as that seemed like an appropriate response. Or maybe it wasn't. My mind was jumbled and I didn't even know what I was doing.
"I think that we should leave now. Get some rest. Your injuries were grave so you need plenty of rest and good food to heal faster." My aunt said and I was thankful for her interruption. I was behaving weirdly in his presence and I wanted to leave.
I gave him a smile and sprinted from the room. He was doing something to me. Maybe it was his face or that easy smiles or those dark brown eyes. Aghhh, I don't know. I have to stop thinking about him.
That evening, I was pacing in the library halls. I couldn't focus on my studies. Veer was stuck in my brain. Did he do some sort of black magic on me?
I spotted Devika in the passage so I ran towards her. I wanted to find out who this Veer was. I was way too curious about him and I couldn't focus on anything. It was as if my mind was fixated on him.
I grabbed Devika by the elbow and took her to the garden. We sat there in a seat and I asked her about him. There was so much about him that I didn't know.
"You want to know about brother Veer?"
I nodded hoping that my curiosity wasn't showing on my face.
"Um, so, Veer, full name Veerendra, although no one calls him by that name, is the army general of Somapura. He's the king's adopted son. Veer's father was the childhood friend of the king who died while protecting him. So, the king decided to raise Veer like his own son. That is the reason why Veer can enter Soma Sangha despite being a non-mage as he's an unofficial member of the Soma Sangha royal family.
That was his introduction. You said that you wanted to know everything about him. Do you also want to know the personal details about him?"
I nodded because I didn't want to disturb the flow of the conversation. I was immensely curious about Veer. It's abnormal I guess, to be curious about someone other than Nakul when I had spent the better part of my life being obsessed with him. I push him at the back of my mind and focus on Devika.
"Veer. If you ask anyone on the streets of Somapura, you'll only hear praises about him. He's the youngest army general and probably the strongest and most competent warrior.
He's smart, good-looking, kind, respects everyone regardless of their position, holds one of the highest positions in the kingdom and that smile is an additional bonus. His charisma can literally charm anyone. I think he's already received a hundred marriage proposals, which he has respectfully declined."
I am sure my eyebrows have gone up to my hair line with this piece of information. Quite a great personality he got there.
"He's so polite and quite a gentleman, no wonder, he's literally the ideal man every woman dreams of. He's also a really fun person to spend time with. Also, I think he knows half the population of Somapura. He thrives on the energy of the people.
Hmmm, that's all I can think of at the top of my head..."
So, I saved the life of a great person. I won't admit it out loud but my heart skipped a beat when I saw his smile. And, he also got a great personality to go with that face.
"Hey, but brother Veer also went to Gyanadeep. You never saw him?"
This surprised me. We were at the same University but I never saw him? How was that possible? That face is unforgettable. Was I so lost in Nakul that I never paid attention to any other boys?
"Wait, Veer....Veer....Gosh! I have heard that name! Was he enrolled in the commoner class?"
"Yeah, why?"
He was the same Veer who punched someone from the elite class in the face. How could I forget? He was the famous rebel! He was quite popular back at the University as well. Why haven't I met him before? I missed an opportunity. But the things just got a whole lot interesting....
