Chapter Thirteen
Lawson took her by the hand and led Jade back inside the luxurious mansion. Stepping inside, and closing the door behind him, Lawson dropped her hand to envelope the man who'd called them to supper in a man-hug. They slapped each other on the backs so loudly it echoed in the hallway.
They pulled away and grinned at each other. "Good to see you, Law."
"You, too, Dalton." Lawson gestured for Jade to join them and then pulled her by the waist into his side. "This is my girl... Natalie."
Dalton nodded at him. Law knew his cousin would understand the hesitation meant it wasn't her real name and Lawson had a reason for not telling him. "It's nice to meet you. It's about time Law brought home a woman to meet the family. We worry about him in California working too hard and just hanging out with his brothers from another mother."
Law chuckled and looked down at Jade. "He means Gus and Kyle. They're not blood relations, but we consider each other family."
Dalton grinned, "She's met Gus and Kyle at Miranda and Ben's wedding, I take it?"
Lawson hugged Jade sideways. "Yes, she came with me to Florida and then we came here. I didn't think I'd get the time off work to come to the second wedding, but Miles needed some extra hours and I was more than happy to give him my shifts."
"We're glad you're able to come. Especially, your mom. She's been focusing all her time and energy the past few months on Miranda and Ben's wedding. I think since Lily had eloped, Aunt Rose has been putting all she wanted to do for Lily's wedding into Miranda's."
Law blew out a breath. "I didn't even think of that. She's been calling Gus, asking him what Miranda would like for the wedding. I gave her a hard time over it..."
"I don't blame you. In fact, I snapped a bit at her myself for calling Gus. That was really wrong of her. I apologized, of course, for snapping at her, but calling someone's ex-fiancé about the wedding to the guy she's actually going to marry... that was harsh."
"I know she didn't mean to hurt Gus. But she did. But now that you mention Lily's elopement, her craziness about this wedding makes more sense. Mom was really hurt that Lily didn't have a wedding with the family that Mom could help plan. She'd been looking really forward to it all of Lily's life and then Lil runs off and gets hitched without the big wedding mom had always dreamed about."
Jade rubbed Lawson's arm. "She does have more kids that she can plan weddings for."
Dalton and Lawson laughed. Law kissed the top of Jade's head. "She does indeed. But Lily's the oldest, so it really upset Mom that she couldn't do the whole big sha-bang."
"You didn't do anything after they eloped? Like a reception or something?" Jade asked surprised. After all, they were doing a whole full second wedding for Miranda, who wasn't family.
Lawson shook his head. "Lily and Mark didn't want anything like that. That's why they eloped. They knew both sets of parents would want to do a whole big wedding and they didn't want any of that."
Dalton shrugged, "You have to do what the bride and groom want. It's their day, not anyone else's."
"So, is everything set for Saturday at the resort? How is the resort coming along anyway? Is it ready?"
A huge grin spread across Dalton's face. "Everything is perfect! The resort is completely finished and ready for its very first wedding. Flowers are being delivered tomorrow and we'll put up the decorations then. The staff is already working and we're doing a practice run tomorrow night at Dominic's restaurant. And after Miranda and Ben's wedding, we'll be fully open to the public."
"How's Nic doing? He was hesitant about opening another restaurant. How's he holding up?
Dalton nodded, "Real good. I think he's happy to be back home. He seems less stressed than he did when I saw him in San Francisco despite the whole opening of the second restaurant here. You and Natalie should come tomorrow night. I'll save you a table."
Lawson looked down at Jade, "Want to go out to dinner tomorrow? Get to see a new restaurant before it opens? A new resort before it opens?"
"Really?! Sure, that'd be really great!"
Dalton smiled at her. "You won't be sorry. The place is amazing and Dominic is a first-class chef."
Jade returned his smile. "Can't wait."
She frowned the familiarity of the chef's name brushing her brain. Slowly an image of a nice, family, restaurant she'd gone to with her co-workers appeared in her mind. They had gone to the restaurant for a co-worker who was retiring. The food had been amazing and the place had a lovely atmosphere of white table clothed tables, comfortable chairs, and a fire burning in a huge stone, fireplace. Jade had been surprised at the affordable price of the meal given how nice the place was and how scrumptious the food had been. Unfortunately, she hadn't had the chance to go to the restaurant another time, but she was sure the name had been Dominic's.
"You said this was the opening of a second restaurant," Jade directed the question to Dalton, "is the first one in San Francisco? It's called Dominic's?"
Dalton nodded, "It is. Dominic grew up here. But he went out to San Francisco a few years ago to open his first restaurant. I talked him into coming back home to open another at the resort."
"That's great! I really loved the food and –," Jade broke off as a bunch of guys ran towards them.
"Run, run, run," they laughed as they ran. They grabbed Dalton by the shoulders and shoved him towards the French doors.
"Wait, what?" Dalton asked, pulling one of the Lawson look-a-likes to a stop.
"G.G's here," he spun Dalton back around, pushing him back towards the door.
"Shit. See you tomorrow," Dalton waved to Lawson and Jade, tripping over the other guys in an attempt to get to the door.
"Seriously, guys?!" Lawson called to them as they fought to get through the door.
"You're attached. You can deal," one of them called back.
"But is that a worse fate?" another laughed, "Sorry, Natalie! Nice knowing you!"
Lawson rolled his eyes, watching them finally coordinate and get out the doors.
"Cowards!" a female's voice yelled after them.
Jade spun around to find a woman around her age and height. She had short red hair much like Jade's normal color, which swung around her chin as she shook her head. The woman wore jeans and cowboy boots like most of Lawson's family. She wore an emerald colored tank top, which complemented her hair, skin, and green eyes. Like everyone else Jade had met at Lawson's family home, she was stunningly beautiful.
Rushing to the door and opening it, she continued to shout at the men running across the field, "You can run but you can't hide! Besides, I know where all you idiots live!"
Lawson laughed watching the antics. The woman shut the door, crossed her arms over her chest, and leaned against the door. "Am I really that bad?"
"G.G!" Lawson grabbed her around the waist and hoisted her up into a bear hug. The woman squealed in delight as Lawson spun her around. Jade pushed down the jealousy growing in her chest. Hopefully, this was just another relative. Lawson set her back on her feet and looked her over. "You look great! And no, you're not that bad. They're just teasing you."
She sighed, "You're partially right." She shook her head, and tossed a hand in the air towards the door. "I'm just trying to help the morons."
Lawson laughed again. "I don't think they're ready to be helped or they wouldn't be running."
"They say that, but..."
He put his hands on her upper arms. "They'll come around."
G.G smiled halfheartedly. "I know. " She turned her attention to Jade and she smiled radiantly. "And you must be Jade! I'm so sorry about my idiot cousins. Pay no attention to them," she gestured again to the door behind them.
"It's fine," Jade answered not understanding what anyone was talking about or how this woman knew her real name.
"Jade's going by Natalie for now," Lawson told the red-head, looking around as he said so, making sure no one else was around.
Jade's jaw nearly dropped at Lawson's casual attitude around this woman. How could he tell this G.G woman her real name?! Lawson took her by the hand and pulled Jade next to him. "G.G's my cousin, one of my best friends..."
G.G put her hand over her heart, "Aw...Lawson Greves, that's one of the sweetest things you've ever said."
Lawson leaned over and kissed her cheek, "You know it's true."
G.G pushed his shoulder. "It's very nice to meet you, Natalie," she said, putting out a hand to Jade.
Jade shook her hand. "It's nice to meet you too."
"Can I ask her?" G.G looked to Lawson. He raised an eyebrow. G.G pursed her lips into a pout and batted her eyelashes. "Pretty please?"
Lawson groaned. He looked down at Jade and she looked up at him in confusion. He smiled and leaned down to plant a kiss on her lips.
G.G clapped excitedly. "Yes!"
Lawson pointed at her. "I didn't agree."
"That wasn't a no!" G.G pointed right back at him.
He sighed. "Fine. But later. We're just going in to eat. Mom's getting restless and we're already late."
G.G smiled mischievously. "Like I told the others, Lawson, you can run but you can't hide."
Lawson kissed the top of Jade's head. "I'm not running or hiding."
G.G's smile grew even wider. "I can see that." She grabbed Jade by the arm and led her away from Lawson, linking her arm around Jade's. "Let's go see about feeding you before all the food's gone," she glanced over their shoulders, "and then you can take the test."
Jade's eyes flew to hers and then back to Lawson. "Test?! What test?" she asked in a panicked tone.
Lawson just laughed as G.G dragged her towards the dining room.
