Chapter Ten
"I hope you are ready for the chaos that is otherwise known as my family," Lawson said, wrapping an arm around Jade's shoulders as they descended the stairs.
Jade could hear many people talking and laughing. It reminded her of her high school cafeteria, everyone being loud and tossing back inside jokes, the current gossip of who was dating who, what parties they had attended over the weekends, etc.
She had never fit in. Jade didn't have anyone to laugh with or share plans for upcoming parties and dates. Would it be the same with Lawson's family and friends?
Jade didn't know anyone, and though her outside had changed, she wasn't sure her inside confidence could keep up with what Jade could already see as not only a beautiful family, but a loving one. Her family barely interacted with her and when they did it was in no way loving. Jade froze.
Lawson grabbed the railing and turned his head to look at her in surprise. "What's wrong?"
Jade took a couple of deep breaths. She forced a smile. "Nothing. It's fine."
Lawson took one step down and turned to face her. He put a hand to her face. "They are many, but they are the best family anyone could have. They'll love you because I..."
Jade's eyes widened. Was he going to say he loved her?!
Lawson kissed her nose and pressed his forehead to hers. "I care about you."
"I care about you too," she whispered and put her hands on his shoulders.
Lawson lowered his head and kissed her gently.
"Law!" a voice called out, breaking them quickly apart.
Jade looked over at a pretty blonde girl, younger than Lawson, but definitely a part of his family with her matching emerald green eyes. The girl had a frantic look on her face.
Jade gasped as Lawson set his hands on the railing and flung himself over. She sighed as he landed gracefully on the foyer floor.
He grabbed the girl by the arm. "What's wrong?"
"Duncan. His leg is all swollen. The one with the..." she glanced up at Jade before looking back to Lawson. "...thing. He needs it off."
Lawson cursed. "Go get Felix or Cade."
"Meadow is already looking for them."
"Where is he?"
"Dad's study. Dad's making the call, but he needs your access codes."
Lawson glanced up at Jade. "I'll be back in a few. Make yourself at home. There's food in the dining room and Libby can introduce you around."
His sister gasped. "But I want to..."
Lawson glared at her, "Libby. Please."
She sighed, "Fine. But keep me posted. He's my brother too."
He nodded and then took off at a run down the hallway. Jade stared after him for a moment before looking at the girl, who was nervously twisting her hands.
When Libby looked away from where Lawson disappeared and back to Jade, she gave an uncomfortable smile.
"Sorry," Libby chuckled nervously, "never a dull moment in this house."
Jade came down the rest of the stairs. "It's okay," Jade stuck out her hand, "I'm Natalie Greves."
Libby chuckled, "Greves, huh? Was that Law's idea or Duncan's?"
Jade frowned, "I don't know any Duncan." Jade sighed as she noticed that the girl seemed to know that Greves wasn't her real last name. "Did Lawson tell you who I am?"
Libby grinned, "Not at all, but I know you're not my sister. At least, not yet anyway." She winked at Jade.
Jade suddenly remembered that Greves was the last name on Lawson's law degree. "Oh, your last name is Greves?"
"Bingo! How long have you and Law been dating?"
"Not long."
"But long enough he brought you home to meet the family. I can't remember him ever bringing a girl home before. Except for Miranda, but she doesn't count. The least he could have done was tell you his last name. Or were you two too busy to talk?"
Jade burst out laughing, "Oh my god, I can't believe you just said that."
"I didn't say it, I implied it," Libby grinned.
"Are you a lawyer too?" Jade narrowed her eyes at her. She was as literal as Lawson was sometimes.
"God, no. I'm trying to escape that fate."
Jade looked at her in puzzlement.
"There you are!" Lawson's mother exclaimed, approaching Jade from behind and slipped an arm around her back. "What are you doing standing around in the foyer? Come meet everyone! Where's Lawson?"
"Duncan's thing is cutting off his circulation and his leg swelled up pretty bad, so Law is dealing with..."
"Oh my God!" Rose gasped, she touched Jade lightly on the arm, "Excuse me, dear," she headed towards the stairs.
"Dad's study," Libby called out.
Rose changed directions and rushed down the hallway. Lawson's mom looked like what Jade must have looked like running away from her boss and his thug. Halfway down the hall, Rose kicked off her heels and took off at a sprint.
"Da-mmmmn, mom runs fast."
"Is Duncan okay?" Jade asked, suddenly worried. She hadn't thought much about the swollen leg that was mentioned, but now Libby had said his circulation had been cut off by something.
"He will be, I'm sure. Law and my cousins will make sure of it. We have a couple of doctors in the family. I'm sure Meadow found them and they're helping out."
"Wow, that's great that they were here!"
"Yeah, but they all live nearby, so..."
"I can't fucking believe you!" an angry voice yelled from down the hall.
The girls spun around to watch J.T push Lawson. Or maybe it was Lawson pushing J.T. Jade wasn't sure. She still couldn't tell the twins apart.
"Me?! You can't believe me?" The twin she thought was Lawson yelled back.
"She's in love with you and this is how you treat her? You're like a yo-yo. One minute you want to be with her and the next you don't. You're screwing with her emotions not to mention her heart."
"I fucking told her that I didn't think we should get back together this last time. Hell, even the time before that. But does she listen to me? No! I told her I'm not ready to commit. I don't want to get married. Maybe someday down the road, but not anytime soon. I told her over and over again that I wasn't going to commit like that. I told her we shouldn't be together if that was what she wanted because I wasn't able to give that to her. She said she understood. She said she just wanted to be with me and that if I couldn't commit, she wasn't going to pressure me. And what is she doing? Pressuring me!"
"So you broke up with her? Again?"
"I didn't break up with her! She broke up with me!"
"What?!"
"She said I don't look at her the way Law looks at Jade. And if that's how Law looks when he's in love, then that's how I should look. And I have never looked at her that way. And you know what? She's right."
Jade gasped realizing that it wasn't Lawson, but J.T that was speaking. But who was the other guy that looked exactly like Lawson and J.T? Were they not twins but triplets? And Brooke had broken up with J.T because of the way Lawson looked at her? That Lawson loved her?
Libby put an arm around her. "You okay?"
Jade nodded.
"Shit," J.T noticed Jade and Libby standing there. "See what you did?"
"Me?!" the other guy said incredulously. "You're the one..."
"Shut the hell up, both of you!" Lawson yelled, coming through another door.
"Finn..."
"Go take Brooke home, Sawyer, she's waiting in your truck."
The guy arguing with J.T shot them both a glare. "Fine," he pointed at J.T, "we're not done."
"Whatever," J.T pushed his way through both men, avoided Jade's gaze, and headed down the long entryway for the rear patio door.
