Chapter Six

Jade awoke to see Lawson sitting in the chair staring out the window.

"Hey," she said with a smile. She sat up and purposely let the blanket slide off of her. Maybe she could entice him to pick up where they had left off the night before.

He smiled back. "You might want to cover up," he said pointing to her bare breasts.  "I'm J.T."

"Oh my god!" She squealed and quickly pulled the blanket over her.

J.T chuckled. "Hey, don't worry about it. They're not the first I've seen."

"Well, you shouldn't see mine! What are you doing in here?!" she demanded, pulling the blankets more firmly around herself.

"Law wanted to work out. He asked me to stay with you until he got back."

"Why?"

He shrugged. "I don't question him."

"Why not?"

"Oh," he said, realizing she didn't know.

"Oh? Does that mean I don't know something I should?"

"That's for Lawson to say not me," J.T answered.

The door opened and Lawson came in wearing gym shorts and a sweat-soaked tee shirt.

"Morning, darlin'," he said to her with a smile.

"Why's your brother watching over me?!" she demanded.

"So you don't run away on me." He answered giving her a quick kiss on the lips.He glanced at his brother. "I can handle it from here, bro."

"Bet you can, bro," J.T said getting up. "Later."

"Your brother saw my boobs," she said indignantly.

He laughed, "Lucky man," he said leaning over and kissed her neck.

"It's not funny, Lawson."

"I'm sorry, darlin'," he said pulling away to look at her. " I just didn't want to leave you by yourself. It's not my fault that you can't tell us apart." He tapped her nose with his index finger.

"You could have woken me up. I would have gone with you to the gym."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Really. Why? You think I can't handle it? Can't keep up with you?"

"I bet you could," he said, chuckled. He leaned over to kiss her again.

"Lawson?" she said, putting her hands to his chest.

"Hmm?" He asked, nibbling on her shoulder.

"You stink."

Lawson laughed. He tugged on her hand. "Come take a shower with me then," he said, pulling her up.

"What?"

"Come on. You need to shower anyway. It'll save us some time." He pulled the blanket off of her.

"Lawson! I'm naked!" she exclaimed, pulling it back.

"That was the idea," he said raising an eyebrow. "Come on, darlin'," He picked her up fire-man style.

"Put me down, you nut!" Jade laughed as he walked her into the bathroom.

Lawson set her in the shower and stripped. Jade leaned against the shower wall, watching him toss his clothes aside and then enter the shower. He turned on the water, turned her around, and put her directly under the stream of the water. Jade wiped the water out of her eyes only to close them again as he put shampoo in her hair and began to wash it. He rinsed it out and then kissed her sweetly.

"Your turn," Jade whispered.

"Oh, I get a turn?" He asked with a smile, ducking his head under the water.

Jade put shampoo in his hair and began to rub it in. "Not like you have much to work with."

"It's easier that way," Lawson ducked his head back under the water and washed it out.

She took a loofah filled it with body wash and washed him down.

"I should have asked you to shower with me sooner," he said kissing her.

"I would have said no."

"You didn't exactly agree this time." He put his arms around her.

"Not exactly, but that's okay, I actually like it," she said touching his face.

"I need a shave," he said, stroking his jaw.

She kissed his chin."You're cute like this too."

"Think so?"

"Yeah." Jade ran her hands up his chest, to his shoulders and down his arms.

Her hand felt an uneven mark. She turned his arm to see a light scar.

"I think I found how to tell you and J.T apart," Jade whispered rubbing his arm.

"That's one," he said looking down at it.

"How'd you get it?"

Lawson kissed her cheek. "I'll tell you someday."

"Not now?"

He kissed her on the mouth slowly and seductively. Jade fell limply into his body, her wet chest against his.

"Why don't you finish up, darlin'? I'll shave in the sink. We don't want to be late," he said stepping out.

"Alright," she answered disappointed, watching him towel off.

He obviously wanted her. She could tell that clearly from his body. But why wouldn't he do anything about it? She began shaving her legs and watched him shave at the mirror.

Was he a virgin like she was and was scared to take that extra step? She wondered.

Jade heard the phone ring and he toweled off his face and went back into the bedroom leaving her to shower alone.

Lawson strapped on his gun quickly and got dressed. The anchor of his lies, he thought nudging it with his other leg. He sat on the bed and rubbed his face. How he wanted her. How he wanted to make love to her.

Yet for the job, the damned job, he couldn't. It wouldn't be right. It wouldn't be fair for Jade either for him to do that without her knowing who he really was.

"You okay?" she asked running a hand down his back.

"Yeah. Fine."

"Lawson, you talk about you wanting me to trust you. How about you trusting me?"

He sighed. "Sit down."

"What?" Jade asked sitting down next him.

"I didn't want to tell you this. But I don't think I have a right not to," he said taking her hand.

"Don't draw it out, just tell me."

"They broke into your house, Jade. Trashed it."

She stared at him in disbelief. Her home? They got into her home? They touched her things?

"How? And how do you know?"

"I have connections. I had someone looking out for something like that."

"Do the police know?"

Law nodded. "Your neighbors reported it. They got a partial id of the car."

"Oh, god," she said putting her hands to her face.

"They don't know where you are, Jade. Nothing in your house connects you with me."

"I know. I know. But what about my family? My friends? I have my address book in my house. They could have taken that and... oh god... I got to call my parents." Jade rushed over to the phone.

He blocked her. "I know you want to, but that's the worst thing you can do for them right now. The police will notify them and watch out for them. You contact them now and you're only putting them in more danger."

"What am I going to do, Lawson? I can't stay here forever," she sat back down on the bed.

He sat down next to her and took her hand. "I got a place. In Texas. You could set up there for a while. Until they catch these guys and you can go back home safe."

"I can't impose on you anymore, Lawson," she said. She put up a hand to stop his protest. "No, you've been too kind to me already. I can find somewhere on my own."

"Look. We're supposed to leave tomorrow. J.T asked me to come home anyways to help him with some things at the ranch. You can check out my place, I plan on staying there a week, so stay with me, see if you like it. If you like it, you can stay. If you don't like it, you can find somewhere else."

"I don't know." Jade rubbed her forehead.

"Think it over. We'll talk about it after the wedding alright?"

"Alright."

*******************************

It was a beautiful ceremony. Jade found herself crying during the whole thing and she barely knew the participants. It was strange to see a line of men as the bridesmaids, or bridesmen, as Lawson, Gus and Kyle were calling themselves. Ben had his sister as his "best woman".  Lawson's twin brother, J.T, and Miranda's brother, Kevin, were Ben's groomsmen.

It was a different type of wedding than she was used to, but beautiful all the same. And Lawson looked incredibly handsome in the gray tux as she knew he would.

She and Lawson returned to the hotel room late again. There was a knock at the door almost immediately. The hotel clerk handed him a large manila envelope. Lawson nodded and closed the door.

"What's that?" Jade asked, pulling off her heels finally.

Her feet were killing her from the day. She had managed to get Lawson under protest to slow dance with her at the reception a few times. She noticed that J.T didn't need to be convinced by his girlfriend. The girlfriend was the one begging to sit down. So, she had discovered one of their differences.

"Just some stuff I had sent for." Lawson tossed it on the small desk in the corner of the room.

"I'm going to take a shower. I worked up quite a sweat," she said with a smile.

"Yeah, sure, darlin'," he replied disinterested, unbuttoning his shirt slowly. He looked deep in thought.

Jade took that to mean he wasn't going to join her. She went into the bathroom alone and closed the door more disappointed than she wanted to be.

Lawson grabbed the envelope and ripped it open. He pulled out the file.

The investigation into the bank accountants had been ongoing for several months. The main suspects were Sebastian Jeffries and Thomas Proctor, both executives. There were snapshots of them as well as some other bank employees, including Jade.

He read the bio on Jade. They had followed her as well. Snapshots, details into her bank accounts. All showing that she was an innocent part in the whole situation especially since she had reported the discrepancies that had shown up in her account. Unfortunately, she worked under these men and had stumbled on to numbers they didn't want her to see.

Law set one of the snapshots of her on top of the file. What was he going to do with her?

He was torn between his professional and personal life. Lawson rubbed his eyes. He heard the shower turn off and put the file back into the envelope. Law slipped off his gun and hid it under a pair of jeans, folded neatly on the desk. He set the envelope on top off it with a sigh.

He pulled off his clothes. He would take a shower also. Clear his head. Law could relax a little. Gus was minding the hallway that night, so he could get at least one decent night sleep. He knew Gus wouldn't drop the ball.

"Going to take a shower too?" Jade asked, holding the towel around her chest.

"Yeah. I'll be right back." Law kissed her cheek lightly and went into the bathroom, closing the door.

Jade sighed. She went over to the dresser,  pulled open a drawer and took out a nightshirt. After changing, she clucked her tongue at Lawson's scattered mess of wedding clothes on the bed. She picked them up and hung the suit neatly in the closet. Annoyed with the jeans on the table as well, she quickly grabbed them to put them away.

"What are you doing?" Lawson demanded, stepping out into the room.

"Cleaning up. You're a pig," Jade teased.

He grabbed the jeans from her. "Don't clean up after me," Lawson said firmly.

"Someone has to," she answered.

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Sorry. I'm usually a neat freak, honest, you can ask anyone," he flashed her a smile. "I'm just distracted tonight. How about joining me in the shower?" he asked, putting his arms around her.

"I just took one."

"I could use some help cleaning up," he murmured, kissing her neck lightly.

"If you put it that way."

He opened a drawer and put his jeans in the drawer with a sigh.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, just a little beat," he said, taking her hand.

"Then why are we going in the shower instead of bed?"

"I like your mind," He said, turning to kiss her.

"It was yours that asked me to join you."

"I'm planning on taking it slow. Like you asked. It's best for both of us. Come on," he said, pulling her into the bathroom.

"What did you do?" she asked in shock.

The lights were off and the room was lit with candles. A bubble bath awaited them.

"I need to relax and a guy needs a real good excuse to take a bubble bath," he said, stepping into the tub.

"Oh, so I'm an excuse?" she asked, stepping in with him.

"Let's just say I'm being romantic," he said, pulling her down into the water with him.

"It is romantic." she replied, lying her back against him.

"Will you come home with me?" he asked, wrapping his arms around her.

"Is this a ploy to get me to come with you?"

"Maybe," he said, kissing her across her shoulder. "I could do more."

"Would you?"

"You want me to?"

She looked at him and nodded.

He smiled. "You like me, huh?"

"You're alright," she answered with a grin.

He reached out and palmed her cheek. "Thanks."

"For what?"

"For looking at me like that," he answered, kissing her gently.

"Lawson, I'd like to come to Texas with you."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, I really would."

"Can I let out a yee-haw or is that going to put you off Texas?"

"Do you actually yee-haw?" she asked with a laugh.

"Yee-haw!" he let out as if he was herding cattle.

She laughed and splashed him.

"Come here, you," he said, grabbing her, and kissing her.

"Lawson?" she asked after a few minutes. They had been just lying against each other in the warm water.

"Yeah?"

"What do you think about country clubs?"

He laughed. "Where'd that question come from?"

"I was just asking. I mean, we hardly know anything about each other and here we are naked in a bathtub."

"I think we know each other better than we think," he said kissing her lightly on the neck.

"Seriously!" She pushed him away. "I want to know everything about you. Even the little things," she said, tracing her finger on his arm where there was a starburst scar.

"You want to know what I think of country clubs? Okay... honestly, I think...they're boring. Rich people talking about how more rich they are than the person they're talking to. I have better ways to spend my time."

"Oh," she said, disappointed he felt that way.

"Oh? What? You belong to one?"

"Well, my family..." she said uncomfortably.

"I'll sit through it if you want me to," he kissed her lightly on the nose.

"You would?" She asked touched.

"Anything for you darlin'," he rubbed her cheek with his thumb.

She kissed him lightly on the mouth. "Thanks, sweetie."

He leaned back and smiled.

"Where'd you get the scar? You never told me."

"Another time, Jade," the light in his eyes dimmed. He pulled her to him, tucking her against his chest.

"You don't want to tell me?" She pulled away from him to look him in the eyes.

"Not right now," he said his eyes full of pain. He forced a smile and kissed her forehead. "I will, someday soon, but not now. Please."

"Alright," she said, leaning back against him. Jade bit her lip wondering what he didn't want to tell her that was so painful. She felt he knew so much about her life yet she was just barely scraping the surface of his.
