Talent show

You had entered the school talent show to sing, not just sing, but get your feelings out and hope someone would hear your cry for help.

You were waiting backstage in a vintage dress taking deep breaths and preparing yourself to sing. When you heard your name be called, you went onto stage and quickly scanned the crowd, there were only three people that stood out. A guy that sat funny, light because he's really popular and a blonde girl with a lot of make up.

You didn't have time to think, the song started and you had to start singing.

Creepy music filled the room and you bought the microphone up to your mouth.

"Hey, girl, open the walls, play with your dolls
We'll be a perfect family."

You were singing this song in hopes someone in the crowd would understand and help you out, you had to get away from your family.

"When you walk away is when we really play
You don't hear me when I say,
"Mom, please wake up.
Dad's with a slut, and your son is smoking cannabis."

You saw someone in the crowd sit on their knees so they could see you better, you looked down and saw the boy that sat weirdly staring at you in shock. All you did was give him the 'help me' eyes.

"No one ever listens, this wallpaper glistens
Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen."

The truth behind you family was your dad cheats, your mum is an alcoholic and your brother is a drug addict. And when they all came together things ended very badly for you.

"Places, places, get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces.
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."

You heard some people start to clap along and sand up to see better.

"Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."

Soon a crowd was forming at the front of the stage so they could get a better view, you saw the three people that caught you attention push to the front, the girl and light clapping along, bit the other boy just stared in worry.

"D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees.
(D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees)"

At this point some of the Melanie Martinez fans started to sing along, knowing the lyrics already. You were happy that people liked your singing but sad that only one person seemed to know what was being said here.

"Hey, girl, look at my mom, she's got it going on
Ha, you're blinded by her jewelry.
When you turn your back she pulls out a flask
And forgets his infidelity."

The boy turned to Light and nudged his arm, light looked over and started taking to him.

"Uh-oh, she's coming to the attic, plastic,
Go back to being plastic."

You watched the boy in the white shirt talk to the others as you sung, trying not to make it obvious.

"No one ever listens, this wallpaper glistens
One day they'll see what goes down in the kitchen."

They seemed to get into an argument.

"Places, places, get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces.
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."

You scanned the crowd for anyone else that might catch your drift, but everyone was just clapping for singing along, thinking this was just another performance.

"Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."

You put in a fake smile to not look so suspicious to anyone since they didn't seem to care.

"D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees.
(D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees)"

There was a short instrumental part in the song where the crowd went quiet and under the music you heard words that gave you hope.

"Don't you get it? This song is a cry for help, something's wrong"

You looked down at the boy in the white shirt who had said those words and stated at him, trying to get his attention.

"Hey, girl (hey, girl, hey, girl, hey, girl, hey, girl, hey, girl, hey, girl, hey, girl...)
Hey, girl, open your walls, play with your dolls
We'll be a perfect family."

As soon as the crowd started to clap again, the boy looked over at you and made eye contact at your almost teary eyes.

"Places, places, get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces.
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."

He pointed toward the doors and kept his eyes on you. You gave a slight nod and continued to sing.

"Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."

With the last words you felt a lone tear down your cheek.

"D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees.
(D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E
I see things that nobody else sees)"

The crowd went nuts as you saw the boy run out of the room to meet you, you gave a quick bow and ran off stage, tears now streaming down your cheeks. You dropped the mic and ran through then back doors where you looked for the boy.

All at once you were engulfed in a hug. You hugged back, not caring who it was as you fought back the tears.

"Are you alright?" He asked.

"No..."

He broke the hug and smiled at you. You got a good look at him, he was a tried looking guy with pain clothes. He looked pretty good for such a shaggy boy.

"What exactly is your family doing?" He asked.

"Exactly what the song says" you sobbed.

He wiped your tears with his sleeve and pushed your head up to look at him.

"(Y/n) right?" He said.

You nodded.

"Alright, you can call me L. Answer me honestly here, are you physically or mentally abused?"

You nodded again.

"I need to get out of there, please help me"

He wrapped his arms around you again, giving you a comforting squeeze.

"Gather your stuff after school and meet me here, you can stay with me for as long as you need" L said.

"Really?"

"Really."

"Thank you so much" you said squeezing the life out of him.

It was silent as L held you in his arms, letting you spill your feelings.

"Hey (y/n)" another voice said.

You looked up to see Light and the blonde girl.

"You won! Come get your prize!"

You smiled ear to ear, winning a talent show and being saved. What a great way to start the week.
