5| And We Meet Again
F I V E
Lawfully Dysfunctional
It was a Saturday and my first day of work was going to be a Monday, so naturally, I was due for a "do or die" shopping trip. Seeing my limited budget I knew that I needed a slightly cheaper but yet professional work clothes shop and was relieved when my mother claimed to know just the right place.
The chosen shop was good, and the trip was successful even though it ate up a majority of my weekend. I went through my new collection once I got back home with my sister peeking into my room ever so often, waiting for me to toss her some of my old, unused clothes which she always got during a cupboard cleanse.
When I walked into the building bright and early, I would like to say that all eyes turned my way to take in my ethereal beauty, but then I would be lying. I didn't particularly stumble in, but my walk was ordinary with the receptionist barely giving me a glance as I took the employee lift up. The department manager gave me my cubicle for my term in the office, wished me a half hearted good luck and went away.
The people I'm the company, or should I call them robots with an aim, didn't seem all that friendly and welcoming, so I kept to myself seeing that I didn't have a lot to do. I was after all only an intern, and it was my first day. My phone pinged with an incoming message and I slyly lifted it off the desk and kept it on my lap, checking it under the table. The change in my mood was almost instantaneous when I saw that it was an invite from Deli and Marc to meet up at Fabeo's, the small, but fancy bar I used to work at.
Eight O'clock couldn't come fast enough as I tidied up my desk and left for Fabeo's. My shirt fluttered in the wind as a I walked to the station, I was lucky that the weather forecast for the evening was wrong, or else I would be freezing with the mid December snowfall. The ride was boring and as soon as I reached my destination I was greeted with a hug that made me feel warm and cosy. Deli did always give the best hugs.
'You're finally here! Although pretty late.' She playfully admonished me which playfully roll my eyes.
'I'm right in time.' I flipped my hair back. I sat on the high stood and looked around to find Marc, who hadn't made an appearance yet.
'He has gone to meet someone, I think he said he will come in an hour.' Delilah noted my wandering gaze.
We spoke for a total period of about half an hour during which Marc joined us at the end, and I stilled. It wasn't my best friends brother who caused this reaction, in fact it was a man who was so opposite to Marc's cheery nature that I wondered how they were seen together, the thought of them both being rich heirs never came to my mind.
It seemed like Dinitri Vanderbilt's fate either brought him to me too often, or that the man was stalking me. The latter ofcourse seemed rather far fetched, because what business mogul would he have with a simpleton like me?
I raised an eyebrow quietly but said nothing, waiting for him to acknowledge me as I knew he would.
'Delilah.' His smooth, deep voice was heard, poorly over the noise of the bar, but still powerful and present.
I saw Deli stand up nervously, but the nervousness was only for a second as it was replaced with a warm voice that could probably melt his ice.
'It's a pleasure to meet you.' She raised her glass of cheap alcohol in the air, slightly. I looked up just in time to see a small smile stretch over Mr. Vanderbilt's face. Deli's eyes flickered to mine and she raised an eyebrow and repeated the action of her hand once again, causing Mr. Vanderbilt to look towards my seat.
'We meet once again Miss Freya!' He exclaimed, unenthusiastically if you ask me.
'Unfortunately.' I shrugged. I hadn't forgot what the damn smoke of his car did to me.
'The two of you know each other?' Marc asked surprised.
'He's the man I was talking about the other day.'
'Didn't I tell you what happened at the party with them?' Deli and I replied simulateneously.
'Man! This guy?' Marc laughed and I made a face, sticking my tongue out for a second.
'You're so immature.' Mr. Vanderbilt commented and I glared at him.
'He,' I pointed at Marc, 'is my friend, so keep your nose out of what doesn't concern you.'
'He is also my friend, so I think I'll keep my nose right where it is, thank you very much.' He rolled up the sleeve of his white shirt till his elbow, and tucked it to keep it in place. His arm was quite muscular.
'That's sounds so weird.' Deli raised her eyebrows.
'Exactly! At least make some sense.' I smirked.
'I make money, sense is something that people are born with, though you seem to lack it.' He smirked as mine fell.
'How do you know this "thing"?' I spun on my heels towards Marcus, and luckily I didn't fall and make my fool of myself.
'He was my college roommate.' Amusement was dripping off his words, and my fingers itched to poke him.
'What?' Marc looked at Deli.
'You've met him, I'm surprised that you don't remember him though.'
'No I haven't.' She shook her head.
'Of course you have!' Marc argued. 'You came to visit and I introduced you all to each other.
'I don't think I have met your sister Marc, she apparently had better plans than to meet her brother. And I remember it clearly because you were complaining about it for the rest of the month!' Mr. Vanderbilt supplied.
'I knew you loved me.' Deli gave him a cheeky grin.
'I was talking about Ray.'
'You didn't even speak to Ray properly till we were in college.' Delilah through her arms up in the air.
'She has a point.' I sided Deli, because it was a fact. Marc and I didn't really become good friends till we were "big", he thought he was too cool to be talking to his little sisters friends. Well, jokes on him.
'You girls always gang up on me.' He whined.
Deli and I high fived each other. The intruder cleared his throat and I sent him the dirtiest look I could for interrupting us. I know that him being a guest should be welcomed, but he was not. I had actually forgotten about him.
'Why are you standing? Sit down Dimitri.' Marc gestured towards the chair.
This was going to be a long night.
