CHAPTER 21: "DO YOU TRUST ME?"

"Are you sure my outfit is really appropriate?" I ask, watching where to step my boots as I hesitantly get off the motorcycle.

I'm currently wearing a navy blue sweater dress with some tights and ankle boots. At the time I've chosen it, it has seemed like the best option for a first date, but now, I start to doubt it...

I've spent hours debating what to wear because Alex hasn't told me anything about where we are going, nor what we are going to do. I just know it's only gonna be the two of us because I've kept badgering him to tell me more to know what to wear, and he's said whatever I want, given that we're going to be alone and "anything or nothing is perfect" for him. Though I doubt it's perfect for the scenery.

Around us, there's only green... From what I can see, since the sun is setting, we're in the middle of fields, on a narrow dirt track bordered with bushes and weeds. Though I'm too focused on Alex and the many questions swirling in my head and in my stomach to really observe the surroundings.

"Yeah, it's perfect..." Alex's gaze travels down my body one more time as he grabs my hand.

I don't know if it answers my question, or just arises more along with the warmth on my cheeks. But it isn't the biggest question mark churning my stomach right now.

Alex is already turning around as assured as I am confused, but I stop him before he even takes a step."Wait!"

"Yeah?"

"Er... " I bite my lip as he leans closer, his penetrating eyes looking attentively in mine. "I know you've already told me it was nothing... But... What did really happen yesterday?"

The question has kept me up a good part of the night, that and the outfit dilemma, and since a few minutes, it has returned to haunt me. I've thought not knowing has been better, but the state of my stomach clearly proves the contrary.

"I caught sight of Greg with his arm in plaster on our way here..."

He sighs. "Nothing serious, there was a fight... A rival gang came searching for trouble, and then someone called the police. That's why Josh called me: they needed help to get away. Luckily, all our gang got away before they arrived, not the other gang apparently!" His lips twitch in a smirk. "And for Greg, he's just got his wrist broken when he ran away, and the others just got some bruises. They're lucky bastards, don't worry!" He offers me a smile, his piercing eyes diving into mine reassuringly.

I still can't comprehend how he can talk so naturally about things like that and how he can ease my worries while saying all of that. It doesn't really shock me. I guess I'm now totally aware of his bad-boy lifestyle, and I've accepted it the moment I kissed him.

"And you?" Accepting his way of life certainly doesn't mean I'm not worried.

He opens his arms wide. "I'm totally fine! You can check!"

I narrow my eyes, smiling as his devious smirk lets me know he's more than fine. "Okay... Then, let's go!"

He leads me down the narrow path, and I follow behind him, the track quickly tapering as we climb up a mound.

"Where are we going?" I ask once again, this time my voice wavering as the tall grasses are clinging to my tights. Well, I hope it's only plants because the night is falling, and I don't really dare to look down. I keep my eyes on Alex's strong back wrapped in his legendary leather jacket; it gives me a sense of safeness and coziness as my stomach is boiling. In addition to the stress and fizzy excitement of our first date, there are the fear and uncertainty of not knowing where we are going, which is also very thrilling.

"It's a surprise..." He looks back at me, the twinkle shining in his dark eyes adding more bubbling in my stomach. "You'll know very soon..."

Indeed, I don't even have time to open my mouth that we already arrive at the top of the small hill and a big building comes into view. Yet the floodlit off-white edifice standing out in the dark horizon doesn't give me more clue.

That's only after a few more steps closer that I can catch sight of a sort of tower with a rounded roof on one end of the building.

"An observatory?!" My rising voice echoes in the silence around, but my heart's loud thumps are starting to compete with it.

"Maybe..." Alex offers me a wink, and I let him lead me.

He only lets go of my hand when we get to a back door. I throw a glance around at the barely lit door and alley, which is contrasting with the other side of the building that has seemed far more bathed in lights. But I'm quickly more intrigued by Alex searching in his pockets and taking out a flash drive.

I watch with big eyes as he inserts it in a reader on the wall, probably the security system reader. It feels as surreal as a spy movie when a tiny green light appears on the screen and the door opens.

"How did you do that?!" The words leave my mouth before I can really think of any of this.

Once again, Alex surprises me, yet at the same time, it doesn't shock me.

"You don't wanna know!" He just gives me an enigmatic smile that tickles my curiosity.

He's probably right, but I insist with a smile. "Yes, I do. Tell me!"

"It's a program. It highjacks their security system and puts it on pause."

I gape between Alex's easy smile and the sophisticated little reader. "You made it?!"

"Yeah, but it's not complicated!" He shrugs. "It works because their encoding is basic," he goes with his explanations, his eyebrows slightly furrowing like every time he talks about science.

I get lost, not understanding the rest of what he's saying, as I'm too focused on how cute – and hot at the same time – he looks.

"I didn't understand everything, but in a nutshell, you're a hacker!" I lift my eyebrows, trying to put a word on everything, though maybe the word is a mystery; Alex is a mystery.

He laughs. "Josh tells me the same thing all the time!"

"I'm sure I would understand if you gave me some lessons!" I smile, although when I think about it, every time I ask him to give me lessons, it's about outlawed or dangerous matters. I should be scared by all of this – and I am slightly uneasy about it – yet it also tickles my curiosity because they're part of him.

"Yeah, maybe another time..." He leans closer, whispering near my ear and creating a shiver that is not out of fear or danger-thrill. "But tonight I have other plans..."

***

"It's beautiful..." I breathe, my eyes dazzled by the stars shining above us as we're lying down on a soft cover. "... So peaceful..." I add, soothed by the steady harmonious rhythm of Alex's heart under my ear.

He looks back at me, and I can feel his intense eyes observing me while his fingers stroke lightly my hair.

"... It's a perfect date," I murmur. My mouth seems to have a mind of its own, or at least it isn't controlled by my head, as I confess in a whisper, "Well, actually, I don't have a lot of experience with first dates, but for me it's perfect."

It's true; I couldn't have thought of a better first date. We've watched the stars through the telescope, Alex standing close to me, careful and considerate the whole time, whether it has been through his words or through his touches. Then we've eaten a little picnic he's brought, and now, we're just staring at the beautiful sky, exceptionally clear for the season, as if even the universe has aligned for our date. There have been also a few candles and some fire-sparkling kisses on top of that, which make this date even more than perfect and have surprised me – the fact that Alex has lit candles, not the kisses, though they always daze me.

"Well, that makes two of us!" He laughs, and any nervousness I could have for having talked too much vanishes with the light sound.

I rest my chin on his strong chest to stare back into his dark gaze.

"It's a first for me too." He offers me an honest smile that shines until his tenebrous eyes, and it outshines all the stars above us.

My heart resumes with its wild pace, which it has almost had all night, and it becomes faster as he slightly lifts up his head and also uses his hand in my hair to pull me closer. I let him lead me until our lips meet for a slow tender kiss that still brings chills all over my body. I still can't comprehend it is real; it almost feels too magical to be true.

But as he pulls back, I understand it can be magical and true in the hypnotizing dark gaze that stares at my foggy eyes. I even feel the magic Alex's eyes create – they turn my skin into burning lava – when they travel down my face slowly, down my neck and the collar of my sweater resting on my collarbone, his fingers following closely behind.

"This outfit is definitely perfect..." he rasps, his fiery fingers tugging at my collar and making me shiver.

His eyebrows faintly furrow together as his piercing gaze fixed only on me notices this detail. "Or it isn't warm enough? Here my jacket." He immediately fumbles to take off his jacket.

Feeling everything but cold in front of his tight tee-shirt hugging his strong shoulders, I stop him. "No, I'm fine. I don't– Oh! Speaking of jacket!" Something flashes in the haze of my mind and I reach out for my bag. "I totally forgot to give you back your jacket from the other day!"

"Oh, you can keep it." He takes the denim jacket from my hand and puts it around my shoulders, the rough fabric engulfing me once again in a comforting intoxicating cocoon of Alex's perfume. I must admit I've nestled in this jacket several times in the last two days. Its sweet spicy scent makes me feel like I'm in Alex's arms, soothing my worries and helping me fall asleep.

"I like it better on you." He nods, his gaze wandering down my body slowly and appreciatively.

My cheeks, as well as my belly, warm up in a nice dizzying sensation.

"You're sure? I don't want you to think I've kept it on purpose. It's just that... that I forgot yesterday, and I brought it to give it back to you tonight, but I forgot." I nibble on my lip as I realize the more I talk the deeper I get in my awkward clumsiness.

But Alex doesn't seem to mind; it only spurs him to get closer and get my head even more dazed. "You really have your head in the clouds!"

"Or you're really distracting..." I confess, breathless, as he observes me with his intense eyes.

"Oh?! Really?!" A mischievously cocky smirk forms on his tantalizing lips, and he leans even closer. "Am I really that distracting?"

He's so distracting that I even forget to breathe. All I feel is his minty chocolaty breath ghosting over my lips and leaving me haunted. All I can see is the contrast in his hazel-brown eyes between the sparkle appearing and the darkness engulfing it all.

"Your lips are distracting." I manage to articulate, and I find the boldness to skim the contour of his plump lips with one finger.

"Then, get ready to get distracted again!" he says, his voice laced with confidence and promise that make my legs restless.

He keeps his words, nibbling my finger and sidetracking any remaining thoughts in my mind. The only things I'm focusing on are the warm plumpness of his lips and the soft graze of his teeth as they are sending tiny sparks that climb up my arm to tingle my lips in need. He makes those sparks light up when his distracting lips finally capture mine in a firework-like kiss, and the kiss doesn't only take my mind away; it also catches my breath with the intensity.

So quickly we have to pull away, our lips slightly swollen from our passionate kissing. Yet it doesn't stop his sinful lips, redder than usual, to attack the side of my jaw with little butterfly kisses which echo with the swarm of butterflies in my belly.

The denim jacket falls from my shoulder, but I don't care as I'm leaning into his warm touch. His strong hands draw me closer, while the reason of my distraction follows a slow, burning trail up to my right ear, where his tongue joins briefly under my earlobe, before going back down the same way and a little lower down my neck.

Each beat of my heart seems louder than the previous one, and I know very well that Alex can hear and feel it when his lips – well actually his full mouth – stop right between my jugular and my ear to catch the soft skin and the echo of my heart in a passionate, voluptuous kiss. At this point, the butterflies in my belly are turning into a fire lower in my core, and I can't help but let out a sigh of pleasure. I can't help anything actually; my body is discovering newfound sensations, and the curiosity and excitement are rushing through my veins. I pass my hand in his soft curls, my fingers gripping as if to hold on to my bearings. But his throaty groan response and his hands boldly sliding under my dress to slowly conquer a new territory make me slip gradually and willingly from reality.

I probably could have lost myself in this dreamy haze, but a shrill noise, that is still registered in my near memory, makes me fall back abruptly to reality and stops Alex's restless lips.

I know this piercing sound; everyone knows it, and I've heard it so recently that I should recognize what it is instantly, but I can only remember Alex's shallow breaths and the loud beats of my heart.

Still too dazed to comprehend anything, I open my eyes to see Alex's clenched jaw, illuminated by a blue flashing light. Frustration, worry, and anger cross his dark eyes as quickly as the blue flashings reflecting in them before he gets up.

That's only then, as the cold invade my still burning body, that my heart jumps and picks up an even faster pace than before. Frozen on spot, I glance around the room and at the blue flashing reflects coming from the glass ceiling invading it. It confirms what I've already guessed but that my brain couldn't process: one or probably two police cars are outside the building.

Alex mumbles some curse words as he bustles around, and I just watch with wide eyes the few boxes and packets of leftovers from our romantic picnic disappear in his bag, as well as the candles he quickly blows out. The room takes back the same appearance as when we've entered it: white and empty, except for the large telescope in the center, yet with the loud siren and blue flashing lighting, it is so far from the peacefulness we've come in.

I'm just processing everything when a deep threatening voice echoing through a loudspeaker announces, "Police! You're not allowed to be here! Show yourselves now!"

I swear those words sound way more spine-chilling than when you hear them on tv, and now even my heart is frozen on spot.

"Shit!" Alex hisses. " I swear it's never happened before."

A line appears between his brows, and below I can see a sincere sorry look in his tenebrous eyes, while mine are round, traveling from Alex to the door leading to the entrance downstairs where the voice has come from.

My thoughts are spiraling about what to do, though there isn't a lot of possibilities: there is only one door and one window; we're trapped in this small tower.

As I'm already contemplating the thought of surrendering to the police, the sound of the window opening pulls me out of my paralyzed state. Jumping on my feet at the same time that my heart, I come closer to Alex and stare at him with wide eyes while he's contemplating down the window and surely also an idea.

"Do you trust me?" he asks, sitting on the windowsill, one leg on each side.

"What-What are you...?" I stammer, looking out the window, where I can see a gap of around one meter until the next roof. "We can't jump! It-It's..." I can't even form the words; they're stuck in a growing lump in my throat.

Of course, the roof is flat and in concrete, so we can easily walk on it without falling, but there's this gap standing on our way... If we jump and miss our target... Let's just say we're quite high, and down, there is the hard ground...

"Do you trust me?" Alex wipes away the frightening scenarios that have been about to flash in my mind with his smooth voice, and his intense eyes repeat the same question as they are boring into mine.

My head is spinning with the contrast between the steps rushing in the stairs and the silent invitation of his hand held out for me.

"Yes." My heart commands my mouth without hesitation. The realization catches my shallow breath because trust is not a small detail for me and not a lot of people have mine.

Though when I grab his hand, I know I trust him with all my heart and all my soul.

He stands on the little windowsill and carefully helps me get up.

"On three we jump!" He eyes me for confirmation.

I try to inhale some courage or some oxygen as the 'one' leaves his lips. His hand squeezes mine tighter on 'two', and I glance back one last time in the room, some policemen arriving just when Alex counts 'three'.

I close my eyes and leap, handing my whole trust to Alex.

When I feel the concrete back under my feet, I re-open my eyes and start to run, following Alex's lead. Just now, I start to feel the rush of adrenaline spreading in my veins, my heart pumping hard and fast, yet feeling light as a feather.

I don't know if it's me and my stunned mind, but it seems that in no time we get to the end of the roof. There, we finally stop to take in everything around and also some breaths.

Luckily we're alone on the roof, so the policemen haven't followed us, but from the lights flashing from downstairs and the voices echoing from everywhere, it's clear that they're still there, certainly patrolling around the building.

Alex scans the area around, his planning look on: furrowed eyebrows, clenching jaw, and piercing dark gaze. It is terribly sexy, but I force myself to look away.

"There!" I point out when my eyes land on an emergency staircase.

His whole face lights up with a smile and a twinkle in his dark eyes, and he is even hotter this way.

My cheeks are on fire as he tells me, "You're amazing!"

We quickly hurtle down the stairs, he, going first to make sure there's no one.

With each step, more adrenaline fires in my veins, and with the cold air clashing on my skin, it makes me shiver as I know we're getting closer to succeed – or to get caught, I realize when Alex stops in his tracks. But no, it's just because the stairs don't go all the way down. So he hops down the last part, and like the true knight in shining armor he is – well, dark knight in leather jacket – he catches me in his arms when I jump. I don't have time to go into raptures about it though because we hear the policemen approaching and Alex leads me in the fields.

We silently walk, bending down to hide in the tall grass and small bushes. Though I'm not sure where we are putting our feet; everything is dark, the faint light of the crescent moon for only light. Therefore, I'm really trusting Alex blindly.

Soon, we get to his motorcycle, far enough from the observatory, so we don't hear the loudspeakers and sirens of the police anymore. Everything is so calm, with only a few noises of the nocturnal nature: owls, frogs, crickets, and the wind in the foliages contrasting with the rush I still feel inside. If there weren't a few flashing blue lights in the distance, we could think it has just been a hallucination.

"I'm sorry." Alex pulls me by the hand, making me look at him as I'm about to climb on his motorbike.

I must admit that even if we're quite far from the policemen now, I'm still eager to put even more distance between them and us.

"I didn't plan for this interruption." He lets out a sigh, which I can't decipher if it's frustration, anger, disappointment, or heaviness.

"It's one of the risks of entering everywhere illegally!" I smile, feeling the remainings of the adrenaline rush tickling my skin as I look in his penetrating eyes.

"I guess I'm not really good at planning first dates!" He gives me a half-smile.

"No!" I immediately protest. "I don't agree with you! Like I've told you earlier, it was a perfect date for me! And hey! It was fun running away as long as we didn't get caught!" I laugh.

I would have never expected this for a first date, but I should know that with Alex, I always end up surprised, and that's what I like. It must be the thrill from the evasion, or maybe from Alex's kisses, yet I really mean those words: it was a perfect date.

Alex chuckles, observing me with something, I don't really know what, shining in his tenebrous gaze.

"If you want a calmer date, how about I organize our second date?" The words find their way naturally out my mouth as my whole body is screaming for more. "I mean if you want..." I add, looking up in his dark eyes where a sparkle lights up.

"With pleasure, Miss Clumsy Cookie!"

And with this, he gives me a fire-lighting kiss before we take off on his motorcycle, escaping the policemen like Bonnie and Clyde.

So what do you think of this first date? ;)
