Chapter 88

"Wait, so this is where you grew up?" Rachel asked Gar as they, Roy, Dick and Courtney walked through the town of Cloverton.

"Only for a few years. Before that, I was in Africa with my parents." Gar said, since his parents had been running a wildlife preserve back before he'd turned green.

"Before the plague that killed your parents." Dick said, since he knew Gar's origin story, but there was something about it that never sat right with him about it.

"Yeah, I still don't know what caused the outbreak, but I was the only survivor and it's only thanks to the work of Niles Caulder, though his treatment did have the side effects of turning my skin green and giving me my powers." Gar said.

"And then he brought you to this mansion?" Roy asked as they walked up to Doom Manor.

"Yeah. And it turns out that I wasn't even the freakiest houseguest he had." Gar said.

"Yeah, Bruce has a file on his little Doom Patrol. Even though they've never been seen outside the house before." Dick said.

"The Chief doesn't want them to draw attention to themselves, since unlike me, they can't really blend in and they need more intensive care than I did." Gar said.

"What, why?" Rachel asked, since that was suspicious.

"You'll understand when you see them." Garfield said, grateful he still had a key to the gate as he opened it.

"Okay, this place definitely feels creepy and that's coming from me." Rachel said as they walked through the house.

"Yeah, but once you get passed the decor, it does feel like home." Gar said.

"Garfield, what a surprise." Dr. Niles Caulder said as he rolled up to them in a wheelchair.

"Chief, good to see you again." Gar said.

"What brings you back?" Caulder asked.

Before Gar could explain, Courtney's eyes suddenly glowed a bright yellow before her staff suddenly flew into her hand.

"What's going on?" Rachel asked.

"I don't know. But the staff is drawn to something in this house and so am I. Cosmo, you're up." Courtney said, referring to her staff by it's affectionate nickname and the staff warbled before lifting her off the ground and flying her away.

"Courtney." Rachel said as she took flight herself after her friend while Dick glared at Caulder.

"What's going on here Niles? This is your one chance to come clean freely." Dick said, right as they heard loud clunky footsteps come running down the stairs to see some kind of robot walk down.

"Cliff." Gar said as he rushed forward to hug the bot.

"Gar, what brings you back here?" the robot asked.

"Long story." Gar said.

"Who are you?" Roy asked.

"Cliff Steele." Cliff said.

"Wait, the racecar driver?" Roy asked, since he'd been a fan of Cliff's before his life had gone to shit.

"You know who I was?" Cliff asked.

"Yeah, I was a big fan. I thought you were dead." Roy said.

"And there are times I wish I was, since that would be preferable to being a brain inside this tin can." Cliff said and if his robot face could glare, they could all tell he'd be glaring at Caulder for how crude he'd made his body.

But they were cut off from any further conversation when they heard Courtney's scream from below.

"She's in my lab." Caulder said, now worried about what they'd find.

"Let's go." Dick said, pushing his way past Niles and Caulder with Gar and Roy right behind him with Niles and Cliff behind him.

After they entered the lab, they found Courtney standing in front of a table with Rachel holding her hand as she screamed again at whatever was on it.

"Courtney, what's going on?" Dick asked as he walked up, only to pause at what he saw.

"Courtney, is this?" Dick asked, in shock.

"My father. And according to these instruments, he's alive." Courtney said as she looked down at the comatose but still alive body of her father, Sylvester Pemberton, who, according to Pat had said taken lethal injuries during the last battle with the ISA, he looked completely healed, and hadn't aged a day since Courtney had last seen him 10 years ago.

"And it looks like whoever runs his lab was running some kind of experiment on him." Rachel said as Dick turned to glare at Caulder.

"Explain, now." Dick said.

"Well, there is a good explanation for this." Caulder said nervously, only to be hit by a dark energy blast courtesy of Rachel.

"Shut up. I won't listen to your lies. I can sense the darkness within you Niles Caulder. And it's time to bring the truth to light." Rachel said angrily as even her voice changed to something scarier as the red gem on her forehead glowed brightly as her magic took the form of a dark black raven, suiting her up in the process and she blasted her energy right into Caulder's skull.

"What the hell is this?" Cliff asked, since while he'd seen some crazy shit in Doom Patrol, this was next level.

"I don't know, this is new to us too." Gar said, since he'd never seen Rachel like this before and it scared him, in fact, it looked like the only person who wasn't scared was Courtney.

"You bastard. You heard rumors about the healing effects the staff has on its wielders, so you dug up Starman's grave to see if it was true and it was. And you were trying to find a way to steal the very power that was keeping him alive into yourself, which would kill him." Rachel snarled as she lifted Caulder up from his chair.

"What?" Courtney asked, her staff glowing dangerously.

"But that's not all you've done. I see everything you've done, Niles. Everything you did to Rita, Larry, Cliff and Gar." Rachel said.

"What the hell is she talking about?" Cliff demanded.

"Caulder didn't help you because he cared. He's the one who's responsible for what you've become. He exposed Rita to the toxic gas that made her unstable. He sabotaged Larry's plane and fused him with his negative spirit. He cut your breaks and arranged for the car crash that killed Cliff. And he unleashed the plague that killed Garfield's parents and all those innocent people just to try and access something called the red and turn Garfield into Beast Boy." Rachel said as two other people, a woman and a man covered in bandages came rushing in.

"What?" the woman, they assumed was Rita, asked in shock.

"You destroyed their lives in your selfish quest for immortality and then kept them isolated here to study them." Rachel snarled at Caulder.

"It was for the greater good." Caulder tried to explain.

"Save it. There is a special place in hell for you. And it's time for you to go there." Rachel said, only to have Courtney stop her.

"He doesn't deserve to get off that easy. He's not worth losing anymore of your soul to your father. Let him rot in a cage for the rest of his life. You've exposed Rachel. That's enough. Help me bring my father home." Courtney said, not at all afraid of Rachel, who began to calm down.

"But I still need to dole out some form of punishment and the best one in this case is to trap him in his own mind. Like this." Rachel said as she did just that, dropping Caulder in his chair and leaving him practically brain fried.

"I'd ask if you guys were hungry but I think that we've all heard enough to make us lose our appetites." Larry said.

"I can't believe it. I believed in the Chief and he's the one who killed my parents." Garfield said.

"He destroyed all our lives, Gar. And while he's suffering, it doesn't change what he did to us." Rita said angrily at what she'd found out, but she hugged Gar nonetheless, since after his mother had died and he'd come to the manor, she'd become a second mother to him.

"Maybe not, but now you have access to the smartest people on the planet, including members of the Justice League. I'm sure they'd be happy to find ways to help you all. You might not get your normal lives back, but you won't have to hide anymore." Dick said.

"You mean that?" Cliff asked.

"You have my word. But first we need to get Starman home." Dick said.

"I'll take him and Courtney back to the Tower. You guys should stay here until Argus shows up to lock this piece of shit up in Arkham Asylum, since that's where a maniac like him belongs." Rachel said.

"Agreed." Dick said.

"But before I go, Cliff, there is something else I saw in Calder's mind that you should know." Rachel said.

"And that is?" Cliff asked.

"Your daughter is alive. And when you're ready, we'll help you find her." Rachel said, since she could, that Cliff wasn't ready for his daughter to see what he'd become, especially since he'd never be able to feel her again. At least for now.

"Thanks for that Rachel. And you guys are always welcome here, since I think we'll still call it home for now." Cliff said and Larry and Rita both nodded, since this house was the only place uniquely designed to deal with their conditions.

"Thank you for showing us the truth." Rita said.

"I'm sorry you had to find out like this." Dick said.

"He couldn't keep lying to us forever. And now we know to never trust him again, if he ever recovers." Rita said, looking over at the chief, who was reduced to nothing now.

"Let's go Rachel. I want to see my dad again." Courtney said and Rachel nodded as she waved her cloak to teleport herself, Courtney and Starman away.
