Chapter 6
After the party ended, Laurel convinced Moira to let her take both Jasmine and Oliver home, since while she knew that Moira would rather Oliver stay at the mansion, she knew that Oliver would rather go back to his own apartment, especially since before they'd left for China, Laurel had spent a lot of time after she'd gotten Oliver's phone call getting his stuff out of storage so that it would feel more like home to him, though most of it was still in boxes so that they could redecorate together.
"We'll need to get you a new key, since I may have changed the locks when I moved in." Laurel said with a smile as they arrived home and she opened the door.
"Considering that I lost my keys when the Gambit went down, I'd need a new one anyways. Just please tell me you still have my bike." Oliver said and Laurel smiled, since if there was one thing Oliver had loved almost as much as her, it was his bike. A custom Harley-Davidson Softail that he'd spent a lot of time restoring when he hadn't been deployed overseas. The bike had a dark green and black paint job and Oliver had spent a lot of time working on it. Laurel honestly thought that if her boyfriend wanted too, he could open his own garage, since he'd always had a way with machines, since one thing he and his dad had bonded over when he was a kid was restoring and working on old vehicles, especially old planes, which was why, to Laurel's surprise, he'd taught his son how to fly a plane.
"Of course, though you may need to give it some work since it hasn't been driven in years." Laurel said and Oliver nodded as she opened the door and Oliver smiled as he entered his apartment for the first time in five years and he smiled as he could see how much it had changed. Mainly from all the toys that were scattered across the floor and on the furniture. It was clearly no longer the bachelor pad it used to be and he was fine with that, since he'd never intended for it to be a bachelor pad forever, it had just changed in a different order than he'd expected them too, but at least now they were finally together.
"Love what you've done with the place. It looks better than I remember." Oliver said with a smile.
"Glad you like it, though tomorrow, we'll do some redecorating as we unpack your stuff, since this is just as much your home as it ours, so you should feel at home. Though right now, I think it's time to put a certain someone to bed, especially since she has to go back to school tomorrow." Laurel said, looking at the little girl in her arms.
"But I'm not tired." Jasmine pouted, right before she yawned, which kind of ruined her argument.
"Come on Jasmine, it's bath time and then time for bed." Laurel said and Oliver chuckled at seeing Jasmien pout, but he honestly wished that he could be the one to put Jasmine to bed, but he knew that he hadn't earned that right yet. But hopefully soon he would. Though he also knew that once Laurel was done, there was something else he needed to talk to her about, since he didn't want to keep any secrets from her, especially since they were finally living together and he didn't want to give her the wrong idea of what he'd be doing at night.
When Laurel came back downstairs after putting Jasmine down, she found Oliver sitting on the couch with two glasses of wine waiting for her.
"Thanks. I have to admit, I've been picturing this for a long time and now that it's finally happened, it's even better than I thought it would be." Laurel said and Oliver smiled.
"Let's hope you still feel that way after what I'm about to tell you." Oliver said, knowing he needed to do this before he lost his nerve.
"What are you talking about?" Laurel asked.
"Just please let me finish before you say anything." Oliver said and Laurel nodded as Oliver began to explain everything to her. What happened to him over the past five years, including his father's suicide in front of them, that had caused Laurel to cover her mouth in shock and horror that he'd seen that, where he'd been, what he'd been doing during that time, his father's message and finally, what he was planning to do now that he was home.
"So, basically you're planning on becoming a real life Robin Hood?" Laurel asked as she digested everything he'd told her.
"I have to do this. After the things I've seen over the past five years, I know that there are evils in this world that the law isn't equipped to deal with. And based on everything my father told me, before he died and in his message, there is something coming to this city, something bad and I think that's why my dad was on the Gambit to begin with. He was trying to stop it and I don't know, maybe it feels like I need to finish it, I need to right his wrongs." Oliver said.
"Ollie, I respect that, believe me I do, but are you sure about this? Do you want to run around in a hood with a bow and arrow?" Laurel asked him.
"Honestly, I can't explain it, but something in my heart is telling me that this is what I'm meant to do. I'm a soldier and we both know that this city is only a few criminals short of becoming Gotham. Your dad is one of the only clean cops left on the force. Someone needs to save this city and make it a place for families, for our family, for our daughter, to grow up in. Especially the Glades." Oliver said and Laurel could see nothing but resolve in his eyes.
"You're trying to make a better world for our little girl." Laurel said.
"I am. Just like how in Gotham, the crime rates didn't start going down until that Batman guy showed up, because the criminals there weren't afraid of the cops and it's a similar situation here. The criminals in this city just aren't afraid of the police anymore." Oliver said.
"I know. And as much as I hate to admit it, you might be what this city needs. But promise me that you won't go back to being the killer it sounds like you were while you were gone. Everything I've heard about Batman says the same thing, he has a code, he never kills. Promise me you'll live by the same code. Never kill unless it's the only option you have, as in, whatever maniac you're facing is too dangerous to be left alive. That's the one flaw I see in Batman's code. I respect that he doesn't kill, but considering some of the lunatics he's fought, it might've been safer for everyone if he had." Laurel said, not caring that she was betraying literally everything she'd been raised to believe in, but she knew that Oliver was right.
"I promise. I'll only kill if it's the only way to end the threat, which means that I doubt I'll need to use that kind of force." Oliver said and Laurel nodded.
"And promise me one more thing." Laurel said.
"Name it." Oliver said.
"That you'll be careful and that you'll always come home to me. I lost you once, I can't lose you again." Laurel said and Oliver nodded.
"I promise." Oliver promised her.
"And bring in backup. After all, soldiers never go to war alone." Laurel said and Oliver nodded.
"Something to think about, but for now, I think there's something we've both been wanting to do for the past five years." Oliver said and Laurel smiled.
"Let's take this upstairs and make sure the door is locked in case Jasmine decides to try and sneak out of bed." Laurel said and Oliver nodded as he quickly scooped Laurel up into his arms bridal style and carried her upstairs.
