Chapter 48

To say Artemis had been shocked when her foster father told her once they got in the car that he was the Green Arrow was an understatement, but she didn't truly believe him until he brought her to his hidden lair, which he called the Barracks.

"My foster dad is the Green Arrow. I just hit the jackpot, going from having supervillain real parents to having foster parents who are superheroes. Or at least my foster dad, since he's a founding member of the Justice League." Artemis said as she looked around and saw they weren't the only people here, since Laurel had come down the elevator with them and there were other people in the Barracks and they were gathering around them.

"Who are all these people?" Artemis asked.

"This is my team. They're people I trust with my life and have committed themselves to follow my lead and contribute to my mission to protect Star City." Oliver said.

"Does that include you?" Artemis asked her foster mother, who nodded.

"I'm actually a bit of a legacy, since I'm the third Black Canary." Laurel said.

"Wait, Black Canary, as in the woman who used to protect the Glades years before I was born?" Artemis asked, since after the emergence of the Green Arrow, a lot of kids, including her, had begun to look into the heroes of the past, so she'd learned about the second Black Canary.

"That was my mother, the second Black Canary and the first Black Canary was my grandmother, who was a member of the Justice Society of America, which is how she met my grandfather, the vigilante known as Wildcat. But anyways, I inherited my family's canary cry meta power." Laurel said.

"What's the JSA?" Artemis asked.

"Kind of the precursor to the Justice League and was established to help the allies during World War 2. But it was kept top secret. Just like all of this needs to be kept a secret." Oliver said.

"I figured. But why isn't Laurel a member of the Justice League?" Artemis asked.

"I've been asking the same question." Laurel said, giving her fiance a look.

"You've only recently become active as Black Canary. The League isn't going to admit a hero that they've never seen before." Oliver said, since they'd had this argument before.

"Okay then, who is the rest of the rest of the team?" Artemis asked, regarding the rest of the people in the Barracks.

"Right. This is the rest of Team Arrow. Artemis, meet Tatsu Yamashiro, aka Katana, John Diggle, aka Spartan, my tech support Luke Fox and our resident medic, Abby Sawyer." Oliver said.

"Nice to meet you." Artemis said.

"Welcome to the Team." Luke said, since Bruce had brought Dick into this life when he'd been younger than Artemis was now.

"Wait, I get to join your team?" Artemis asked, actually looking excited by the idea.

"It might not be the most responsible thing to do, but I think that it can help you deal with all the emotions you've no doubt been trying to bottle up since you learned the truth about your family. I think that this will help us keep you on the right path. Plus, I promised your mother I'd take care of you while she was away." Oliver said.

"I'm not sure I want to go back to her when she gets out." Artemis admitted, since while she knew she'd forgive her mother some day after that moment they had before she'd been taken away, she knew she wasn't ready to forgive her anytime soon.

"She's still your mom and she loves you in her own way. But if you're gonna be a part of this team, then you play by my rules. School comes first, your grades suffer and your suit gets locked up once you get one. You will not go into the field without one member of this team, usually me, by your side at all times and you will not bring up the topic of joining the Justice League until you turn 18." Oliver said.

"I'm surprised you're even considering this." John said.

"I'm just trying to keep pace with the other leaguers, since more and more of them are getting teenaged proteges. Batman of course has Robin, along with Spoiler, Supergirl has Powergirl, Wonder Woman has Wonder Girl, Black Lightning has Lightning and according to the last league meeting, Aquaman's taken on a protege that he's calling Aqualad and based on the latest reports, it sounds like Superman might be getting a protege soon too. It only seems right that I take one too. And Artemis needs guidance." Oliver said.

"I can't wait to get started. I actually have some martial arts experience, since mom wanted me to be able to defend myself in this city. Plus I'm a natural athlete." Artemis said, only to be silenced by her new mentor.

"It's not all about violence and fighting Artemis. Before you can truly commit to this, I need you to take some time and figure out what it is you're going to be fighting for. What reason do you have to put on a mask and put yourself at risk for people you don't even know? You have to know what you're fighting for. It can't just be because you think being a superhero is cool. If you can't find a real reason to do this, then you shouldn't do it at all. After all, my mask or my hood and bow aren't what make me the Green Arrow. It's the choices I make and my reasons for fighting that do that. My strength and courage, those are what make me a hero. And while I see those qualities in you Artemis, I need to know if you have what it takes to be a hero. Not just on the outside, but on the inside too." Oliver said, right as Luke switched one of the monitors to the news.

"This just in, moments ago, Malcolm Merlyn, billionaire CEO of Merlyn Global Group was found dead in the same spot where his wife Rebecca Merlyn was murdered years ago." Bethany Snow said over the news.

"Damn. Think we can spare the manpower to look into this." John asked Oliver.

"It may be related to my mother's disappearance, since it seems too coincidental to me." Oliver said.

"I'm gonna go check on Tommy. I know you want to focus on your mom, but Tommy needs his friends right now." Laurel said.

"Go. Give him my condolences and I'll join you as soon as I can. We'll get justice for this, even if it isn't connected to my mother's disappearance, since we need to get justice for Tommy, especially after what happened to his mom." Oliver said and Laurel nodded as she headed out.
