Chapter 32
"Laurel, I'm sure you must have questions." Sara said cautiously.
"Right now, the only one is how can you possibly justify working for a woman like Amanda Waller? If half the things Oliver's told me about Waller are true." Laurel demanded.
"I didn't realize what Waller was until after she'd already sucked me in." Sara said, interrupting her sister.
"What?" Laurel asked.
"I did start off at Quantico, training for the FBI, but about halfway through, Amanda Waller showed up and said that she saw great potential in me. Potential that would be wasted simply working with the FBI. She told me that if I came to work with her, then I'd truly get to serve my country at the highest level, help protect the country against real threats. The kind that heroes like Batman and Superman face. And I believed it, since that woman is a master manipulator. And for a while, I actually believed it." Sara said.
"Sara, did you know that Oliver was alive and spent two years being forcibly employed by Argus?" Laurel asked in a dangerous tone.
"No, Laurel, I swear, I had no idea. That all happened while I was still a rookie, I wasn't let in on that stuff. I only recently made the cut of Waller's elite commando squad. I swear, if I'd known, I would've told you." Sara said, hoping her sister believed her.
"I believe you. Does Ava know?" Laurel asked.
"How do you think we met? She's Argus too." Sara said.
"How can you stomach working for someone like Waller?" Laurel asked, since she knew the only reason Oliver had worked for her was because she'd forced him too.
"Because I didn't realize how bad Waller was until I was in too deep and now I'm not sure how to get out. Especially since Ava still seems to be drinking the Kool-Aid, since she's not as high on the chain of command as I am." Sara said.
"You could expose Waller." Laurel said.
"Yeah, I have no interest in spending the rest of my life in prison for treason." Sara said.
"Sara, you know there are laws in place that protect whistleblowers from repercussions and you more than qualify for those protections." Laurel said.
"I don't know." Sara said.
"Sara, it's not just your conscience I'm worried about, it's my safety, mom's safety and even Jasmine's safety." Laurel said.
"What are you talking about?" Sara asked.
"I'm a meta Sara and so is mom and there's a chance that Jasmine inherited my metagene." Laurel said.
"What?" Sara asked, shocked to find out that her sister and her mother were apparently metas.
"Since you're apparently a high ranking government agent, you're familiar with the Justice Society of America?" Laurel asked.
"I've read about them in the files, but most of what I know about them comes from the bedtime stories mom told us when we were kids." Sara said.
"Do you remember the stories about the Black Canary?" Laurel asked.
"Which one? The one the files confirm being a member of the JSA or the one mom told us about as kids who apparently used to protect Star City once upon a time?" Sara asked.
"Both, since they were real. The first Black Canary was our grandmother, Dinah Drake and she passed it on to mom, who passed it on to me and there's a chance that I've passed it on to Jasmine. And from what Ollie's told me about Waller." Laurel said.
"If she finds out, she won't hesitate to turn all three of you into living weapons." Sara said, knowing what she had to do.
"Yeah. And we won't be able to keep it a secret for much longer, I'm planning on picking up where mom left off protecting this city, alongside Ollie, since I made him let me join his team." Laurel said.
"Not until I know you're ready. But honestly, I should've come clean the moment I found out the truth about what Waller's been doing, so once the mission is complete and Lyla is safe, I'm gonna do whatever I need to do in order to expose Waller for what she really is." Sara said and Laurel smiled as she hugged her sister.
"I'm glad there are no more secrets between us and you can probably tell mom about your secret, but we both agree that dad can never know the truth about any of this right." Laurel asked.
"Absolutely." Sara agreed as Oliver and the others rejoined them.
"So, is everything good?" Oliver asked.
"Yeah. But now we need to focus on the mission. How do we find Lyla?" Laurel asked.
"Don't most government agents have tracking chips implanted in them?" Oliver asked.
"Wait, that's a real thing, I thought that was just a conspiracy theory." Luke asked, but Gamble shook his head.
"No, it's true. And yes, Lyla does have a chip and since I doubt her captors know she's Argus, they probably wouldn't have known to disable it. If I give you access to Argus's network, you can pull up its signal and we can find her." Jake said.
"Then we'll do a two pronged assault. Once we get the location of Lyla, Tatsu will take Sara and Jake to save her, since their mission is to get intel on that Venom, which the guy holding Lyla is clearly on, so that's the mission that will require extra manpower. I'll take down Gaynor and hopefully we can use that to bring John into the fold." Oliver said and they all nodded in agreement at the plan as they got to work.
