Chapter 30
After giving John and Luke a tour of the base, Ted was pulled to the side by Tavaroff.
"What's going on Russ?" Ted asked.
"Are you sure that bringing those two on board was a good idea? I'm honestly relieved that Queen said no, since one thing he and John Diggle have in common is that neither of them would ever go along with something like this." Tavaroff said.
"And this has nothing to do with the color of Dig or Luke's skin?" Ted asked him, since he was well aware of Tavaroff's record and his opinion of people like John and Luke.
"No, it has to do with the fact that you brought them in under false pretenses and there's a good chance that it's gonna get us all caught." Tavaroff said.
"Which is why I need you to get us something that will help ensure John's compliance." Ted said as he handed Tavaroff a piece of paper with an address on it.
"This is risky. Even for us. Especially considering the kind of heat this could bring our way." Tavaroff said.
"We only need their assistance for this last job. After that, then we get rid of any unnecessary baggage and bail." Ted said.
"Good thing my friend in Gotham sent me that package." Tavaroff said and Ted nodded.
"Agreed. Especially with the rumors of that new vigilante who seems to be trying to be a Batman knock off." Ted said.
"And if this city is going to have a vigilante like Batman, then it's only right that he has enemies like Batman does." Tavaroff said with a grin.
"Be careful what you ask for. Remember, that stuff doesn't last very long, since your friend doesn't seem to give you the good stuff he has access to." Ted said.
"I asked him to do it that way since I don't want to become addicted to that stuff like he is. Besides, I only need enough to finish the job and avoid drawing suspicion." Tavaroff explained and Ted nodded, since that made sense.
"Then get to work." Ted said and Tavaroff nodded.
Later on that night, John was returning home from the grocery store after picking up food for Lyla, who seemed to be having weird hunger cravings lately, only to find the door ripped off its hinges.
"What the hell?" John asked in shock as he pulled out his gun and quickly rushed and searched.
"Lyla." John called out, looking for his wife, only to stop short when he saw that the whole place was in shambles.
"She's not here John." A familiar voice said and John whirled around to see Ted Gaynor standing there, a smug look on his face.
"What the hell did you do? What is going on" John demanded.
"Let's just say that I may not have been entirely honest about what Blackhawk does." Ted said with a grin as he calmly walked up to John.
"Where is my wife?" John demanded.
"Lyla? Yeah, I still can't believe you never blew things with her. I blame Queen for that." Ted said.
"What is going on?" John demanded.
"I thought you'd eventually understand John. Over there, we were trusted with millions in weaponry and personnel. We were conquerors, meant for so much more than just being overpaid nannies to trust fund brats. I admit, Oliver Queen surprised me, proved himself a good soldier, but unfortunately, he's one of a kind." Ted said.
"You really think that gives you the right to steal and kill people?" John asked as he kept his gun trained on Gaynor.
"I'm not going to try and convince you that I'm right. But you are going to join the team. You and Fox." Ted said.
"Why the hell would we do that?" John asked.
"Well, I don't know how I'm gonna convince Fox to be a team player, but you, well, aren't you wondering where Lyla is?" Ted asked as he pulled out his phone to reveal a live feed of Russell Tavaroff, holding Lyla at gunpoint. She looked a little bruised and disheveled, but aside from that, she was fine.
"Where is she?" John demanded.
"That all depends on how you handle the next five minutes. If Tavaroff does not get a phone call from me in that time, he puts Lyla out of her misery and takes your unborn child with her." Ted said.
"What?" John asked as Gaynor threw something to the ground at his feet and John saw that it was a pregnancy test. A positive one. Suddenly all of Lyla's behavior made sense.
"You didn't know. Sorry I ruined the surprise. But the question is, are you gonna become a father, choose to not only stay childless, but become a widower too?" Ted said and John sighed as he lowered his gun.
"Good choice." Ted said smugly, neither of them having any idea that they were being watched.
