Chapter 25

After putting Jasmine down for bed, Laurel headed back downstairs to the living room where Oliver was waiting with two glasses of wine and a bottle on the coffee table.

"I figured we'd need this for this conversation." Oliver said at her raised eyebrow and Laurel couldn't argue with that.

"Thank you. And Ollie, I know you don't want to hear this, but you need to anyway." Laurel said.

"And I don't think you fully understand what you're signing up for. You might have powers now, but I have years of experience, not just from my time away, but also from the army. You have a law degree." Oliver said.

"And I have just as much right to help protect this city as you do, maybe even more, since my mother protected it before you did. And you can't do this alone." Laurel said.

"Which is why I'm bringing in John and eventually others. You don't need to put your life in danger." Oliver said.

"Ollie, you're putting your life in danger to make this city a safer place for our daughter, how can I not do the same thing and make sure that you always come home to her. We lost you once. I'm not risking losing you again." Laurel said.

"Laurel, are you sure you've thought this through? It won't be easy and it's dangerous and it goes against everything you've ever believed in." Oliver said.

"My father may have taught me that the law is sacred, but one thing I've learned from my time at CNRI and now from both yours and my mother's example, I can tell that it's not enough. I've had to watch this city fall apart for years and I haven't been able to do anything about it." Laurel said and Oliver sighed when he realized he couldn't talk her out of this.

"You're sure you want to do this? Because once you commit to this, there's no turning back. You're either in or you're out. No halfways. If you can't commit yourself to the mission completely, then you shouldn't be joining it." Oliver told her, wanting to be sure that Laurel was aware of the commitment she was about to make.

"No going back. This city needs more than the cops to protect it and you can't do it alone. And now I can provide Jasmine with the same example you are. That it's our job to help people less fortunate than us, not ignore them." Laurel said and Oliver smiled.

"I figured, but I needed to be able to say I tried to talk you out of it, even though we both know that once you set your mind to something, there's no turning back and then I needed to be sure that you understood what you were signing up for. But if you're gonna do this, you have to remember that we have to keep our relationship out of the job and you have to respect that unlike our relationship, I have final say on everything regarding our operations. I'm not asking for blind loyalty, but you need to understand that this is the equivalent of a military unit, which means there is a clear chain of command. And you don't start in the field until both Abby and I clear you for it, since Abby is the only person who has the authority to overrule me when it comes to team members in the field when it comes to medical reasons and you're not going in the field until I know that you've not only mastered control of your powers, but I also know that you can fight without them. You either do this on my terms, or you don't do it at all." Oliver told her, making it clear that this was not up for debate.

"I get it, you're in charge." Laurel agreed and Oliver nodded.

"Good. Now I need to find you a teacher." Oliver said, already having someone in mind. Someone he thought could benefit from helping his team out.

"Why can't you train me?" Laurel asked.

"Because if I train you, I won't hold back and I don't want you to hold anything against me, but also, I think that you'd learn better from having another woman teach you instead of me." Oliver said.

"Wow, that's not sexist at all." Laurel said.

"Laurel, several of my teachers were women and I have nothing but respect for them. You need a trainer who understands the limits of your system to make you as good as I am. And I already have someone in mind." Oliver said as he pulled out his phone.

"Who?" Laurel asked.

"An old friend from my time in Hong Kong. Assuming I can get her to come here." Oliver said as he got up to make the call while Laurel smiled, knowing that she'd won her fiance over.

"Why wouldn't she come?" Laurel asked.

"It's a long story with a not so nice end that I really shouldn't tell without her permission." Oliver said and Laurel nodded.
