Chapter 21

"Wait, you were the Black Canary, the vigilante who protected the Glades?" Laurel asked, looking at her mother with newfound respect, since she'd always thought her mother was just a dull professor while her father was the risk taker as a cop. Now she saw her mother in a whole new light.

"Yes and like I said, I inherited this power from my mother, your grandmother, who was also named Dinah. You're the one who broke the streak of naming the first born daughter Dinah." Dinah said to her daughter, who chuckled, despite the minor pain it brought to her injuries.

"Sara can take it when she has a daughter, since I have no desire to share a name with my daughter, since no offense mom, but there's a reason I go by my middle name instead of my first one." Laurel said.

"Well that and because that way it was easier for your father to tell who he was talking to. But that's aside from the point." Dinah said and Laurel nodded.

"Anyways, you were saying that you inherited this power from Grandma?" Laurel asked, since all she really knew about her grandmother on her mother's side was that she'd died before Laurel was born.

"Yes. Your grandmother was the first Black Canary." Dinah said.

"How did she get her powers?" Laurel asked.

"That's a bit more complicated, but your grandmother was actually a criminal. A thief." DInah said.

"What?" Laurel asked.

"That's how she started, but not where she ended, but it's important to start there. Anyways, after your grandmother was eventually caught and sent to prison, she was given a choice. She could either serve her full sentence or there was a chance for her to get out early by agreeing to join the government's secret metahuman program. Trying to create super soldiers to help turn the tide in favor of the Allies during World War 2. The experiments killed most of the test subjects, but instead, it activated your grandmother's meta gene, giving her a canary cry. She then willingly joined the first world's first superhero team, the Justice Society of America as the first Black Canary. She became a hero and that's also how she met your grandfather, Ted Grant, who was also a member. They called him Wildcat." Dinah said with a smile.

"So I'm a legacy of two war heroes? But I've never heard of them?" Laurel asked.

"That's because technically, the JSA didn't exist. It was a covert unit since the world wasn't ready for superheroes yet. Even Wonder Woman was only considered a myth concocted by the US military to put fear in their enemies at the time, since there were no documents that confirmed her existence or activities during World War 1, but she was the inspiration for the Justice Society." Dinah explained.

"Who else was in the JSA?" Laurel asked curiously.

"I don't know their real names, since your grandparents never told me, since they weren't supposed to even be telling me their war stories when I was a kid, but I just thought that they were bedtime stories meant to put me to sleep. It wasn't until I discovered my own cry that I realized it was true. But anyways, aside from your grandparents, the JSA was made up of several heroes, including Hourman, Red Tornado, Dr. Fate, Vixen, Commander Steel, Sandman, Green Lantern and Starman." Dinah said.

"I've never heard of any of those heroes?" Laurel asked.

"They never made the headlines the way Superman or Wonder Woman did, but that was intentional. They didn't need public credit to be heroes." Dinah said and Laurel nodded.

"I can't believe that there was a covert team of superheroes and that my grandparents were members of it. Does dad know about any of this?" Laurel asked, though she could guess the answer, since while her father was a supporter of Superman, he'd openly voiced his disdain for Batman multiple times.

"Of course not. Just like how he has no idea that I was a vigilante before we met, since the only form of vigilantism he seems to approve of is Superman. He has no idea about the Black Canary and its legacy and I think it should stay that way, since I gave up that life when I met him." Dinah said and Laurel nodded.

"I understand that. But why did you get into this life in the first place, since I doubt it was just having the powers that made you want to become a vigilante." Laurel asked her.

"You're right. I grew up hearing stories about the heroics of my parents and how many lives they saved and after I saw just how impoverished the Glades were and how little people seemed to care about it, I decided that someone needed to bring hope to the Glades, so after my powers surfaced, I convinced my parents to train me." Dinah said.

"But you hung it up after you met dad?" Laurel asked and Dinah nodded.

"I knew he'd never approve of that life, no matter how much good I did. He sees the world as black and white. But I'd hoped that the Canary line would end with me, since I never wanted this dangerous life for either of my daughters, since now that I know that you inherited the cry, that means there's a chance Sara did too, but considering all the dangerous things she has to do for her job, I feel like if her cry was going to surface, it would have by now." Dinah said.

"Could Jasmine inherit this cry when she gets older?" Laurel now asked.

"Possibly. There's no real way of knowing right now. But what I do know is that I need to teach you how to control your abilities, just like my mom taught me. But now you need to decide if you're going to use your cry or not. I can't make that choice for you and you need to make sure that whatever choice you make, you made it for the right reasons. And you should run this by Oliver, since you two are finally getting your chance to build a life together now that he's home. I gave up this life when I met your father, but if you're planning on living this life, you should tell him." Dinah said and Laurel had to stop herself from chuckling, considering the irony of that statement.

"I have a lot to think about. But thank you mom. And I'm glad that I finally know more about your side of the family, since you never really talk about grandma and grandpa." Laurel said.

"I know. But that's because of how hard it is for me to think about losing them." Dinah said and Laurel nodded.
