Chapter 13
When Oliver returned to the community center, he found Abby and her medical team, who Oliver was grateful he'd invited her whole medical staff to the opening, though it looked like they'd gotten by with only a few injuries, the rest of the crowd seemed okay, just rattled.
"Oliver, what happened to you man?" John asked as he rushed up to his friend.
"I'm fine John, I just got lost in the crowd. Were there any casualties?" Oliver asked.
"No, just a few wounded in the stampeding, but no one was shot, thankfully, but a lot of people are saying they no longer feel safe donating to this project." John said and Oliver sighed.
"I'm guessing that's what the shooter was after, since we both knew that a lot of people in this city weren't happy about what I was trying to do here in the Glades and I really shouldn't be surprised that someone hired a lowlife to sabotage it, since you can't deny that this had to be the work of a professional." Oliver said and John nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, which definitely narrows it down to the people in this city who can afford to hire that kind of muscle, since it wouldn't come cheap." John said.
"That's basically everyone in this room." Oliver said.
"True. I think that you, Thea and Helena Wayne are the only rich people in this building that can be considered above suspicion. It really sucks though, since it's rare that one percenters in this city actually give a damn about people on the opposite side of the tax bracket from you." John said.
"I know what it's like to have to struggle to survive with no support whatsoever after my time on the island and I'm trying to prevent the people of the Glades from feeling that way." Oliver said.
"And luckily the Wayne Foundation is backing you and it sounds like once Thea takes over Queen Consolidated, she's gonna back you too, since it's noble what you're doing." John said.
"Thanks John." Oliver said.
"No problem, but do you have any idea on who hired the shooter?" John asked.
"No clue." Oliver lied, since he actually did have a lead, but he wasn't exactly sure how he'd explain to John or anyone besides Laurel how he knew the name the shooter went by, but he did think he might have a way to track him down and he'd figure that out after he attempted to salvage the night.
After the police had arrived and had managed to somewhat calm down the event, Oliver decided that it was time to try and salvage the evening, so he went over to the podium that had already been setup for the welcome speech he'd originally planned to make tonight, but instead, he guessed he'd have to make up a new speech on the fly.
"Attention ladies and gentlemen, first off, I'd like to thank those of you who are still here, it shows how much you really care for what I am trying to do here. Trying to make the Glades better. To make Star City a better place for all of us to live And while I know many of you are rattled and frightened by this attack and I don't blame you, but if anything, this incident proves why this community center is necessary. That feeling you all felt tonight, that's how the people of the Glades likely feel everyday, scared and wondering if there's anyone out there who can help them. And the reason I started this center is because no one should have to live their lives that way. In constant fear of what's coming next. I've felt that way before myself while I was on the island. I know how it feels to be powerless, to have no idea if I'll live to see tomorrow. And it's not something that people, even criminals, should have to feel. And according to the statistics provided by Detective Quentin Lance, it looks like a majority of the crime here in Glades is really just a result of its citizens trying to get what they need to survive. I believe that this center can be the key to beginning change here. And be the first step towards truly reintegrating the Glades back into Star City, since I think we've all forgotten that the Glades is just as much a part of Star City as the rest of it. And it's time that its citizens felt like they were a part of our city again." Oliver said, to much applause from the crowd and he could tell that he might have just salvaged the evening.
The following evening found Oliver walking up to an old garage in the Glades, since he needed more information about the shooter and he was pretty sure he knew where to get it, though he didn't tell Laurel, since she knew the details of what he'd been through while he was gone, including his time in Russia, he didn't want to involve her any further than that, nor did he want to betray his friend by telling a lawyer about the location of a mob stronghold in Star City. Especially when that was a resource he intended to take advantage of now.
"Who are you?" an angry russian voice asked and Oliver rolled his eyes as a few russian mechanics walked out of the building.
"Someone who's looking for Alexei Leonov before you even deny it, look at this." Oliver said as he pulled down his shirt to reveal his tattoo.
"You are Bratva Captain?" one of the thugs asked.
"Personally appointed by the Pakhan Anatoly Knyazev himself and he's given me full autonomy for this branch. And right now I'm here to employ your services and if you don't believe you, can call Anatoly and ask him yourselves." Oliver said.
"We will confirm your story and then, assuming you check out, we will do business. But not before." the leader said.
"Fair enough. And I'll be sure Anatoly knows how welcoming you are to a Captain who's held in much higher regard in his ranks than any of you." Oliver said, trying to resist the urge to chuckle at how that conversation will end.
