Nightmares (Age 5)

It was just after midnight. Lauren awoke with a familiar twist in her stomach. She lay in her bed for a moment, listening to Sirius toss and turn in the next room. She nodded to herself, silently pulled back the covers and went downstairs into the kitchen. She grabbed two mugs from the cabinet and began to make her signature hot chocolate with marshmallows. She then went back upstairs, hot chocolate in hand and quietly nudged open the door to Sirius's room just as he bolted awake, sweating and panting

"Nightmare?" Lauren asked. Sirius nodded. She crossed the room and pressed a mug of hot chocolate into his hand before sitting on the edge of his bed. "Tell me about it," she said, taking a sip from her mug. Sirius shook his head

"You don't want to hear about my nightmares," he insisted. Lauren looked at him.

"You know I'm going anywhere until you tell me, now drink your hot chocolate," she said firmly.

"Alright" Sirius sighed.

The next day...

It was midday and Sirius was downstairs, preparing for a meeting of the Order of the Phoenix. Lauren, however, was in Sirius's room, halfway under his bed, hunting underneath it with a fireplace poker.

"What are you doing?"a voice asked. Lauren peered out into the room and her gaze fell on a familiar magical eye.

"Oh, hi Mad-eye" she said cheerfully, prodding at a corner of the bedstead with the poker. "I'm hunting for a nightmare monster"she explained, determination in her voice.

"Why?"

"Because Sirius always has nightmares so I thought that if there was a nightmare monster under his bed and I chased it away, then he would stop having nightmares," she paused and slid out from under the bed, looking at Mad-eye curiously. "Your eye can see things other people can't. Right?"

"Yes it can," Lauren smiled.

"Could you look for the nightmare monster?" She pleaded. Mad-eye looked at her little hopeful face.

"Alright," he agreed. He kneeled down and peered under the bed. There was nothing there. "Well what do you know," he said." There is a nightmare monster under there."

"I knew it!" Lauren cried. She picked up the poker and held it like a sword, ready to battle the monster.

"Hang on," Mad-eye said. "There's only one way to defeat a nightmare monster," Lauren thought for a moment, lowering the poker.

"Constant vigilance?" she guessed.

"No," he offered. "The only way to defeat a nightmare monster is to put another monster in the same place to scare it out." Lauren frowned.

"Like a good dreams monster?" she asked.

"Exactly," Mad-eye said, nodding. Lauren smiled.

"I can do that!" she exclaimed, dropping the poker and running from the room "Thanks Mad-eye!" she yelled. He shook his head and left the room.

Later that night...

Sirius sighed and plopped down on his bed. He swung his feet under his bed and felt something soft. That's strange, he thought, there shouldn't be anything under my bed. He got up and reached under the bed and pulled out something. It was soft, fuzzy, pink and had googly eyes. Sirius frowned.

"Lauren," he called. She came bounding through the door.

"Yes?" she asked.

"What's this?" He questioned, holding the pink thing up.

"Oh," she began. "That's Harold."

"Harold," he repeated.

"Yep," Lauren said, nodding. "He's a good dreams monster. I thought that maybe the reason you had nightmares all the time was cause there was a nightmare monster living under your bed, but I couldn't find one, but Mad-eye Moody said there was one under your bed, so I made a good dreams monster to scare him away and I named him Harold. So if you keep him under your bed, then you won't have nightmares," she paused, thinking. "Well, that and we're out of hot chocolate mix." Sirius shook his head, smiling

"Alright," he agreed, putting Harold back under his bed. He crossed the room and put his hand on Lauren's shoulder "Now, let's get you to bed."  Sirius picked her up and walked to her room.
