to see the tree they cut down ten years from your birth
"Hey Dan, me and H are gonna go get some coffee if you wanna come? Niall and Shawn found this new place that they love and they invited all of us to go. Wait wait, no. You are going, so get your lazy ass out of that ice cream tub and get dressed!" Louis's high (THROUGH THE WIRE THROUGH THE WIRE THROUGH THE WIRE IM WATCHIN HER DANCE) pitched yelling voice was enough to convince Dan to go, after all he did need to get out of the house. If he was going to make any changes in his life to help himself on the path to happiness, this is definitely where it all started. With a small nod and a smile he rushed into his bedroom and looked around it, feeling disappointed in his cleanliness. He had been a clean freak before M had died, but afterwards he just hadn't found the motivation to clean. More times than not, Louis ended up cleaning his room or even doing his laundry for him. "Clean room when I get back, step 1."
The lanky brunette snaked his way to his closet and looked through it, looking over different types of graphic tees and button ups before finding a nice navy blue dress shirt. Louis had gotten it for him for his birthday the year before, and it was one of his go to shirts if he was going somewhere nice or it was a special occasion-which for Dan, was very rare. He pulled it off the hanger and tossed it over his shoulder, looking for the pair of black skinny jeans with the small white heart embroidered on the hip that he always wore with the "special occasion" shirt. They were his favorite pair of jeans for no real reason, but he honestly wore them a bit too much. Louis had even threatened to burn them, at one point. Who could blame him though, they were the cutest things on the Western side of the Earth! Anyways Louis had no room to say anything about Dan's choice in denim when in fact all Lou wore was track pants, which in Dan's mind were absolutely disgusting.
Slowly but surely Dan began to get dressed, only to wonder if Niall and Shawn even wanted to see him. Every time they had come around had been after Matty passed, so Dan hadn't been the brightest of souls to say the least. Though they had always tried to make him smile which meant a lot to the man, but what if they were sick and tired of his moping around? Honestly, even Lou probably was at this point. Well, until now that is. Dan was going to change for the better, for real this time, and pull through with becoming the man he used to be. Matty was gone sadly, but there was nothing he could do to change that. He deserved to be happy and to move on, so that was exactly what he was going to do. A knock on his door snapped the man out of his thoughts and when he turned towards the door, he was face to face with a bright eyed Louis. "Yeah Lou?"
The man didn't move, just continued to smile and nod, "I'm just really, really proud of you Dee."

Once they pulled up to the place, Dan's anxiety automatically spiked. Publicity had never really been his strong point, even if it was with just a few people. Yeah he knew them, but at the same time you never knew what could happen. Giant ten foot toddlers to crush the place and begin eating the entire city, and what could he do? Nothing! He would just have to accept his sad fate as an infant's snack. "Louis do I really have to go inside? I mean I can walk home you know-" "Dan I would love for you to take the twenty mile walk back to the house seeing as it's supposed to rain in a bit, but at the same time I really don't feel like living with the guilt of you getting pneumonia on my heart yeah? So no, you're going inside." He turned to the man and gave him that dorky little smile he gave either when he was super happy or being a complete asshole, and of course in that moment it was the latter of the two.
The two climbed out of the car and walked inside the small coffee shop, and automatically the smell of ground coffee and sugar filled Dan's nose. The smell was comforting, reassuring almost, it made his heart feel settled and secure. Oddly enough, the thought of coffee always made him feel a little more sane. Louis nudged Dan's shoulder and grabbed his arm, leading him towards the table where Niall, Shawn, and Harry sat. His stomach dropped out of his body then, a rush of insecurity rushing over him. All of them had model worthy looks and personalities, and then there was Dan who was a mess of lion hair and Slenderman limbs. Niall, the Irish beauty- brunette, ocean blue eyes that were practically hypnotic, a cute crinkly-nose smile, and a personality like a teddy bear would have; easily the softest human being on the face of the planet. Shawn, the Canadian heartbreaker- brunette as well, flawless face structure, a ripped body, and a smile that could make angels cry; his personality? The only time he ever got mad or frustrated was when someone hurt Niall, besides that he was always a smiling boy who at the same time was optimistic like nobody else. Then there was Harry, the British baby- yet another brunette, evergreen eyes that shone like gems, and a fashion sense that resembled his gender fluency quite amazingly. Harry was an absolute sweetheart, the perfect human being, and even though he was quite self conscious he had tons of support behind him. How could all of them be so amazing and then there was just Dan.
"Hey Lou, Dan! How are ya, lads?" Niall's chipper voice broke through the sounds of espresso being poured and baristas complaining to brighten up the mood. He always had been the one to lighten everyone's day, no matter the situation; that's one reason why people enjoyed having him for company. Louis sat down next to Harry and kissed the man, bright smiles gracing both of their faces. Dan smiled too, actually finding joy in seeing his best friends happy together. He used to hate it because he was jealous, but today it felt different seeing them together. It felt almost like a relief. Maybe he had finally received the wake up call he had always needed. Shawn nudged Niall with his elbow while taking a sip of his coffee, looking at the confused brunette with a "what are you waiting on" look.
Dan pulled out one of the plush blue chairs and sat down, nervously picking at the sleeves on his shirt. His leg started shaking as well, almost as fast as his heart was beating. For some reason his anxiety was once again spiking, for some reason he wasn't sure of. "Shawn has someone he wants you to meet, Dan. Of course you don't have to if you don't want to, we just thought you two would be really great together. His name is Kyle, he's one of the sweetest guys you'll ever meet. He works here actually! Well he's not working as of now, but I think his shift starts soon. He's an amazing man and we thought you would really like 'em!" Niall's voice was genuine as could be, but the offer made Dan's heart sink. It had been ages since Matty had passed and they were right, it was time for him to move on, but somehow it was still hard to think about.
While he couldn't spend his entire life obsessing over a lost love, it was hard for him to think about being with anyone else. But maybe this is exactly what he needed, a fresh start. "Y-yeah, I'll meet him. Do you know when uh, when he'll be here?" Palms sweating, legs shaking, Dan was taking steps into what could potentially be a new relationship. The four men smiled on the other side of the table as Niall checked his phone, a devious smirk on his face.
"Fifteen minutes, buddy boy."
