Chapter three
On her way outside to search for the supposed park on the roof of the building Clair meets a new enemy in her new life at the orphanage.
Automatic doors.
She idles for a moment watching others use it and it appears simple enough. Not for Clair, she goes towards it and it closes she backs up confused and looks around completely puzzled. "You have to walk toward it more" someone says to her trying not to laugh. "But then you'd run into it" echoed in Clair's mind. So she just used the normal non-automatic door at the side.
Finally outside having defeated the automatic door menace Clair gets a good deep breath of fresh air in. Same as indoor air where's this park at.
And as if they were sent to answer her question a flock of children run out loaded with outdoor items like balls and jump ropes and etc. "are you going to the park" Clair nervously asks. A child scoffs and goes "you don't know where the park is? Don't you ever go outside?" And quickly he is elbowed by another child who says to him "dude that's one of the new kids." He's obviously embarrassed and apologizes before running up the stairs to the park. "Up the way he just ran" a third child says laughing.
As she heads towards the stairs she glances over her shoulder and sees someone: a boy just leaning on a light pole looking like he's waiting for something.. Clair decides that's his business and not hers so she continues up he stairs to the park.
After a good bit of stairs she makes it to the park. The most ideal place for a child to play. Clair gasps in wonder and amazement. But being too nervous and not wanting to play by herself she sits on a bench and watches other children's game of kick ball.
She zones out and is abruptly brought back to reality when someone hops onto the bench next to her. She then realizes she's surrounded again like in the cafeteria but this time there isn't as many kids which is nice.
"Hey new girl! Wanna play with us?" A boy says rather loudly..
"Crank it down a notch man.." one says rubbing the side of his head. The two boys then begin arguing but Clair just tuned it out and tried to ignore it. Then a girl sat down next to her with a smile and says "you can ignore those two they fight over the simplest things" with a giggle. Clair glances at them and mumbles "so noisy.."
"Yup that's a way to put it" the girl agrees
"Well while those two sort.. whatever they are fighting about this time, you wanna play with us?" The girl questions gesturing to a group of her friends. Clair stares for a moment not knowing how to respond.. so she nods
"Hooray!" She yells clapping.
"Guys I got another player!" She yells over to her friends
Clair finds her self smiling. She doesn't bother hiding it, it's been awhile since the last time she did.
They get off the bench and approach the girls friends and she's brought in with open arms and it's nice. "Ooh let's do introductions!" A child excitedly proposes. "Sure why not" the girl says "I'll start, my name is April" she continues. "June" another girl chimes and after her even another girl adds "may". A boy slightly waves and says "hello I'm Augustus" a second boy waves more excitedly greets Clair with a "yo I'm max!" And the final boy nods and says "Alexander".
"With the introductions out of the way let's play!" April says throwing the ball into the air. The children scatter to catch it while Clair stands still confused. "Oh right.." April pants "whoever catches the ball first gets to start" She explains. Clair now regrets remaining stationary.
"Ah Augustus got it" may whines. Augustus simply laughs and waves it over his head. May jumps for it but he holds it just barely out of her reach making Clair almost feel bad.
"Whatever we can start now." April sighs with a shake of her head. Then they simply started throwing the ball to one another and when it was headed to Clair she caught it with a noticeable flinch but bounced back and threw it to someone else at random trying not to pick favorites. This went on for a while until they got bored and wanted to play tag. Clair didn't argue and they did so. Clair did her best and was "it" the least. Then that went on for a while. They got bored yet again and moved onto jump rope in which Clair was awful.
After getting through a couple games of jump rope a chime rang through the speakers. Clair was confused as the children ran down the stairs inside. April walked over and explained "that chimes everyday in between breakfast and lunch as a sort of snack time. Yeah I know we sound like little kids." She laughs before walking a little with a wave of her arm she yells "come on!"
Clair finds her self smiling again and follows.
