This comment wouldn't have worried Jimin if he hadn't noticed how distant Jungkook had been for days now. Barely replying to his texts, their calls were shorter. He assumed that Jungkook had been busy doing things and going places with his college friends, but now that they denied it, he wondered if he was just alone.
This almost looked like February all over again, except Jimin couldn't find a reason for Jungkook to go back to that dark place after being so open and bright not long ago. Did something happen? he wondered.
Jeon009

After a good night sleep, Jimin woke up to the sounds of birds chirping and a fresh breeze through his window, just what he needed to start the summer day in a great mood. He checked his phone, hoping to find a reply from a certain college boy but finding himself on delivered. Did he not see the messages or did he not want to see the messages, Jimin thought to himself. He dismissed the idea when he received a reply a few hours later.
Maybe Jungkook was dealing with something, just like he'd been dealing with Lisa those months ago. He's not someone who talks about his issues and Jimin wonders if he's pushing the wrong buttons.
It was his last year of college and maybe he was feeling stressed over finding internships and figuring out what his career plans are, he could've been having the same struggles as himself and had nobody to talk to about it.
Chim

Jeon009
Later.
It took exactly half an hour for him to hear the honk from outside his house, accompanied by a text from the older boy saying he's there. He grabbed his house keys before hopping down the stairs of his porch and getting into the sliver mustang.
"Hi" he excitedly greeted. "And hello to you baby" he spoke with a tiny voice while grinning at the dog in the backseat.
"Hey" Jungkook said with a weak smile and turned the engine on.
"How have you been?" Jimin asked.
"Pretty good, what about you?" The taller answered, not really looking his way, stepping on the gas and heading straight into the destination of his dog's vet.
"Is everything alright?" Jimin decided to ask, hoping he'll open up right away.
"Yeah why?"
"Just making sure" Jimin smiled, scooping some courage in his palms and reaching with his hand to wrap it around Jungkook's large one, which was leisurely hanging from the arm rest.
The college boy's attention shifted to their linked hands for a second, then back to the road with an unreadable expression wrapping his features. And even if Jimin noticed, he didn't comment on it and instead just gave it a little squeeze before Jungkook let his hand go to change gears.
They arrived to the vet and Jimin stepped out of the car, walking ahead while Jungkook let Tako out as well. They took the puppy to the area where he was supposed to get his shot and sat in the waiting room.
"So this week, you had a lot of fun?" Jimin asked, earning a nod from the tattooed boy.
"Especially at the restaurants" he replied. They were restaurants him and Lisa particularly liked, but Jimin didn't need to know that. If Jungkook wanted to get used to not having her in his life, he felt like he needed to do all the things he enjoyed without her.
"I still think you could've called and invited me, doing all that alone could've been boring" he dramatically sighed.
"We can do that some other time" Jungkook smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes.
"Tell me more, what else were you up to this whole time?"
"I hung out with some people from uni"
"I'm assuming that's where the alcohol came in" he chuckled.
"Yeah" Jungkook partly lied. He didn't want to mention that he was also drinking alone, it would probably upset Jimin and make him ask questions he didn't want to answer. "Okay let's go, Tako's back" Jungkook announced as he pointed to the lady holding his dog.
Jimin spent the car ride enjoying Tako's company and playing with him in the confinement of the backseat. The two put some music on and jammed to popular songs.
"Come on you know this one... I do the same~ thing I told you that I never would" Jimin called before he sang along with the radio. The upbeat music filled the space and his worries temporarily vanished seeing Jungkook enjoy himself. Maybe I'm overthinking, it's probably nothing anyway...
"I need you to stay, need you to stay-ay" Jungkook joined, having a fun karaoke moment and almost scaring the dog with their loudness.
"Do you know what I want?" Jimin asked when a slower song played.
"Tell me" Jungkook said, briefly turning to look at the younger while they were at a red light.
"Let's go to a karaoke together" he suggested, "I want to see you drunkenly rapping some Nicki Minaj" he added, a little giggle escaping him at the thought. "It could be our first date" he finished. Where did I get all this confidence from, he mentally praised himself.
"Karaoke?" Jungkook voiced out, but it wasn't the question that grabbed Jimin's attention, rather the tone and the expression that went with it. Does he not like karaokes? he asked himself.
"Yeah, have you tried it?" he asked.
"Kook come here! You said you wanted to take me out on a date right?" the girl pulled him by the wrist as she skipped over to what looked like a bar.
"Lisa, slow down" he chuckled at her excitement.
"Let's go then" she smiled brightly, opening the door and dragging him inside .
"You want our first date to be on a random Tuesday at a random bar?" he asked in confusion, this might not work with his plans.
"It's a karaoke bar Jungkook can't you read?" she joked.
"I would've if you had given me enough time to look at the place before dragging me in"
"Doesn't matter Kook, we're here now, and I want to do a karaoke with you" he knew he couldn't say no, that means he will just have to postpone his elaborate date until later, maybe for when he asks her to be his girlfriend.
"I've tried it" he replied.
"Why do I get the feeling you don't absolutely love it like I do" Jimin suspiciously squinted at him, ignoring the way he was avoiding eye-contact.
"Yeah I don't know about that, we could do something else though" he forced a chuckle, trying to seem fine even though he never liked to fake his emotions.
"Oh of course, you're such a romantic you would never have a first date at a karaoke" Jimin taunted with a teasing smirk.
"Can you not-" Jungkook interrupted, not enjoying this topic very much.
"Hmm?" the other asked, oblivious.
"Look we're here" the taller instead said and only then did Jimin notice they were at his front door. "Let's talk about this later okay? I have to go pick up my mom" He smiled, hoping Jimin would let it go and take his word for it, which he thankfully did.
"Okay sure" he unsuspectingly replied as he unbuckled the seat belt, stalling a little while fixing his clothes because maybe-- just maybe Jungkook wanted to leave a kiss on his cheek like the other time. He didn't, but that was okay, they will have time for all that in the next two months of summer.
As soon as Jimin's door closed, Jungkook allowed his smile to drop and let out a heavy sigh before stepping on the gas, his mind busy with the thought of alcohol and music. It was ironic how the more he tried to forget the more he remembered, the more he tried to let her go the more she clung to him.
He knew two years of memories would be hard to throw away, and maybe his heart would still ache if he met Lisa in person again because of everything they shared once, almost making him feel like a fool for believing any different. It's only been a few months since the breakup and so far, he's only been living with the illusion of moving on.
The harsh truth was if Lisa tried to mend their relationship a few weeks ago, he might have agreed to hear her out, and the guilt he felt towards Jimin because of it ate him alive. Jimin deserved to be cherished and fully appreciated, not put under her shadow and doubted whenever the thought 'Will he become like her?' found its way to the back of Jungkook's mind.
It was unfair to the boy who helped him through so much and stayed by him like the sun on his darkest days.
Chim
3 new messages just now
He looked at his screen briefly and turned his wifi off, maybe he needs the night for himself, some thinking is in order.
---
"Do you know what the others are up to?" Namjoon asked Yoongi while they were sitting in the older's room.
"Not really" he shrugged, "I've been binge-watching Netflix so I wasn't online much these days"
"Who should I hit up first?"
"I know Hoseok got a part time job as a lifeguard for a few weeks" Yoongi added.
"He did? How do you know that"
"I just know"
"I'll try Jimin first cause he might be with Jungkook right now" the older nodded, unlocking his phone and clicking on the boy's contact.
"Why are you asking though?"
"I don't know, maybe we could do something this weekend" Namjoon shrugged, slightly more alert when he heard Jimin's voice from the speaker.
"Hey Chim"
"Hi~"
"Are you with Jungkook by any chance?" a noticeable pause took place after the question, but Namjoon thought nothing of it a first, maybe Jimin had something on his hands.
"No"
"That's fine, I haven't seen you in days and I thought we could make plans all together for the weekend" Namjoon suggested.
"You're gonna have to check with your best friend" Jimin replied, sounding annoyed.
"Why what's up?"
"I don't know what's up, he's been MIA"
"Jungkook? We texted yesterday though" Namjoon mentioned nonchalantly, now paying mind to Jimin's scoff and tone.
"Really"
"Yeah... All good though we'll think of something with Yoongi and the others on the chat." Jimin seemed off, and maybe Namjoon said something he shouldn't have because Yoongi's eyebrows were raised as well at the interaction.
"Is it just me or that was awkward?" the younger brother asked and Namjoon hummed.
"Who are you calling next"
"I'm thinking Tae"
In another neighborhood, Jimin sat on the porch of his house, soaking in the sun rays and overthinking. He was sipping on a cold can of soda, sporting a frown on his face while thinking about how Jungkook's been ignoring his messages and straight up lying about being so busy.
He picked up his phone and opened the app, lingering his eyes on Jungkook's chat which now looked like a monologue, then locking his screen again. If he didn't pick up his last three calls over the week, why would he pick up this one?
"Asshole" he muttered under his breath. He had no idea why he was receiving silent treatment, all he remembered from their latest real interaction was him mentioning the date, and now he was wondering if he pushed him a bit too far. Maybe he did have something to say after all.
Chim
Why are you avoiding me
Ever since I mentioned that date you've been acting weird and I deserve to know why
If you're not ready yet simply tell me
You know I wouldn't hold it against you
I've been waiting for so long what's a little longer
"Jimin baby, did you put your sunscreen on?"
"Yeah"
"Well there's food inside in case you get hungry, I'll be going out for the evening with Mrs. Kim" she announced, walking out of the house in a casual summer outfit.
"Tae's mom?"
"Jungkook's actually" she replied, and upon hearing that name, he subconsciously sat a little straighter.
"Oh, say hi to Jungkook for me then" he scoffed.
"Why would I see Jungkook? I'm not going to their house"
"I know but she needs to renew her license so he's driving her everywhere now, you'll see him"
"Oh okay that must be new, she was driving fine a couple days ago"
"A couple days ago?" he raised an eyebrow, "But Jungkook said-" the dots started to connect before he even finished his sentence, and he felt a bit too naive for believing the older at his word the way he did. "Nevermind, she must've gotten it back" he smiled tightly as she walked down the stairs.
"Alright then, I'm off, and I'll say hi to Jungkookie if I see him don't worry" she added with a knowing smirk.
Chim
You're such a liar
Not long after that text, he received a call from none other than the upperclassman, and as much as he was tempted to ignore it and give him a taste of his medicine, he needed to have this conversation.
"Hey" Jungkook softly started, "How are you?" he asked from the other side of the line, starting a casual call as if they were just catching up.
"Really." Jimin stoically replied, earning a few seconds of silence from him.
"I know what you're gonna say-"
"No you don't, trust me." One thing was clear, Jimin was not pleased with his behavior.
"Okay then, can you please say what's on your mind?" Jungkook tried. Truth is, he was stressing, sitting on the edge of his bed and bouncing his leg in anticipation while he nibbled on the knuckle of his tattooed finger.
"Why were you ignoring my texts and lying to me every time I said I wanted to see you" Jimin's tone wasn't as harsh as he intended for it to be, but he didn't try harder than that.
"I needed a bit of time to think about things" Jungkook vaguely responded.
"Think about things... Maybe I rushed a little, but I don't deserve this treatment from you" Jimin shook his head even though he couldn't see it, "You could've just said not yet, I'm good at adapting to your pace, you should know this by now"
"I should, right?" Jungkook skeptically said, getting up and starting to put his sneakers on. "Are you free right now? I think we need to have his conversation in person" Jungkook asked and Jimin hummed.
"Come over, my mom is out with yours" he informed, "And you really are such a liar by the way. Talking about how you were so busy driving your mom to all these places and staying available for her... We texted once Jungkook, in the whole week, and not even for long. It feels like February again, except you're only taking a break from me this time" Jimin muttered the last part, hearing the revving of the engine and assuming Jungkook was on his way.
"I'll be at your door in a bit okay? Let's continue then" Jungkook replied, hanging up after an agreeing hum from the younger. He sat back against the seat and rubbed his face with both hands before stepping on the gas.
Only a few minutes later as promised, the silver car parked on Jimin's street and Jungkook hopped out of it, palms sweaty, aware of what was about to happen because he'd already thought about this moment too many times. Something that couldn't be said for Jimin, who had a subtle smile on his lips, seeming glad to even just see the older again.
"Hey" the shorter greeted, watching him come up the few stairs and stop ahead of him, blocking the blazing golden hour sun from his face.
He noticed Jungkook's uncomfortable stance and thought the older needed some reassurance that he wasn't excessively angry with him, so he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around his torso, enjoying the warmth and scent he'd missed, the other did the same.
"Hi" Jungkook finally greeted back, his eyes shut and heart hammering while they stood holding each other for a few seconds.
Jimin broke the hug first, looking up to meet his eyes. "Have a seat" he invited, claiming his chair back and offering soda from the cooler.
"No thanks I'm alright" Jungkook quickly declined. "I'm sorry" he instead started with.
"You're gonna have to be a bit specific" Jimin still kept a lighthearted tone.
"For avoiding you without saying anything..." he replied.
"I made you nervous with that date didn't I? Trust me I don't know where I got that courage from either, I just said it without thinking" Jimin admitted. "But I told you the other day that if something is wrong you can just let me know-"
"It wasn't just the date Jimin" Jungkook interrupted, guilt almost written on his forehead.
"What do you mean?"
"Remember you suggested a karaoke" Jungkook started, seeing him nod. "That was my first date with her" he added, noticing how the look in Jimin eyes went from expectant to almost annoyed.
"Well that's one coincidence" the younger huffed. "I hope you know that where the date is doesn't matter, or having a date at all at this point..." It would be a lie if he said he was fine with the fact that she was still brought up in their conversations, but the emotion in Jungkook's eyes told him there's even more to it.
"I can tell how you're feeling from your face Chim" he said.
"And how am I feeling?"
"Disappointed, you're disappointed in me" he replied with a tight, sad smile.
"I'm not disappointed in you"
"You are"
"I'm just... I just don't understand why you would cast me aside for this. I am surprised that you felt the need to stay away from me just so you wouldn't say you're uncomfortable with that idea" Now it was Jimin's turn to bounce his leg.
"Well if you're not disappointed in me, I'm disappointed in myself"
"You're always hard on yourself Jungkook-"
"Please listen" he urged, "When we're together, when you would say certain things, I just keep being reminded of my ex and it's so wrong..." he confessed, feeling dread and relief at once.
"What are you trying to say?" Jimin asked, his eyebrows starting to crease in confusion.
"I don't want to compare you to Lisa, I don't want to think about her when I'm with you but it feels like I can't run away from my past"
"Kook, look at me" Jimin demanded. "You're not just going to wake up one day and forget everything about your ex-girlfriend of two years, and more of friendship." he asserted, "I never asked you to do that nor should you expect it from yourself. Moving on just means that the memories don't make you feel the way they used to" he elaborated.
"Right" Jungkook replied, but there was uncertainty in his voice.
"Jungkook..." he called, "How do the memories of her make you feel" he dragged, a wary look in his eyes.
"I don't know, sad?" Jungkook replied but more like a question.
"Do you think about her when I hold your hand?" Jimin inquired, and although his expression was unreadable, it didn't take a genius to know he wasn't happy about having to ask these questions.
"Sometimes"
"And how do you feel when you do?" his voice was softer now, his temples clenching and releasing the longer Jungkook took to answer.
"It's..."
"Are you still in love with her?" Jimin cut to the chase. This should've been a no-brainer question, Jungkook should be answering no in a heartbeat considering what she put him through and what's been going on between them lately.
"I don't know" he finally admitted. Upon hearing that, Jimin leaned with his elbows on his knees and stared ahead at the sky, not wanting to give a reaction just yet. "That's what I was trying to figure out while I was away from you. I chose not to meet you for a while and see if those feelings are for you or for her" Jungkook justified, a swarm of butterflies wrecking havoc in his chest, the bad kind.
"Please just be honest with me, I need to know where we're at. I don't want to pressure you but I need to feel secure about this" Jimin pleaded, it was emotionally taxing for him to just go with the flow lately, especially because he never knew where the flow would lead.
"I do have feelings for you Jimin believe me" Jungkook asserted, looking into the younger's eyes, sure of this at least.
"The problem is, if there's even a chance that you still have the same type of feelings for her, you'll never have room for me..." Jimin's smile was sad and tired, clenching at his heart.
"I'll always have room for you" he disagreed.
"Not enough" the other countered. "I guess back to square one" he sighed.
"But now it's different, I just need some more time" Jungkook nodded to himself.
"What do you mean?" the other asked, his eyebrows not getting a rest.
"This week when we weren't seeing each other, I realized a few things, and I feel like-"
"Not again..." Jimin shook his head in disapproval, he didn't care what great revelations he found, this wasn't going to happen. "You want to go isolate yourself? This time just from me? That's some bullshit" he scoffed, rolling his eyes at the idea.
"Trust me I know what it sounds like"
"But you don't know what it feels like Jungkook." This conversation wasn't going where he initially thought when he wanted that call. "Remember when you asked me to wait for you? The only condition was to not do exactly this, the only thing I asked for"
Jimin stood up in frustration, no longer able to contain his temper. He crossed his arms against his chest and looked down on the seemingly embarrassed college boy. He couldn't believe this was even an option, how inconsiderate did Jungkook need yet to be.
"I just told you that I needed to feel more secure about whatever we have, and leaving me for God knows how long is not the way to do that" he added, "I don't know how you think this works but I can't be waiting for... somebody I talk to once in a blue moon"
"And I understand that"
"Then why are you even suggesting it?" Jimin asked, raising his shoulders in puzzlement. He maintained eye-contact as Jungkook got up from his seat and came closer, stopping a foot away.
"If I leave, you won't wait. If I stay, I may not be good to you..." he started, "Maybe we have to choose cupcake." His eyes were kind and full of longing, Jimin could tell he didn't like what he was saying either.
"You want to stop?" his arms slowly fell to his sides while he still looked up at the taller boy, throat tightening by the second.
"You know I would never want to hurt you, right?" Jungkook said, reaching to grab Jimin's hands and noticing his reddening nose.
"Why are you doing this" Jimin was trying to keep his tears in.
"I don't want to associate you to the pain she left me with. I don't want to take the risk of becoming mean to you, or denying you certain things just because they remind me of her, I want to fully be with you" Jungkook said.
"You're really going to leave me" he muttered.
"Don't put your summer on hold for me. Go out, have fun, meet people, and if you meet someone better so be it... " Jungkook almost pleaded with his eyes for him to understand.
"I can't believe you're breaking up with me before we even started dating" Jimin retrieved one hand to wipe the tear that fell down his cheek.
"I wish there was another way, but I care about you too much to be toxic with you" he sighed, "Because if things don't work out between us I still wanna be able to stay friends with you" he added, feeling his own throat burn, so he just pulled Jimin closer until he was wrapped in his arms again, then rested his chin on the top of his head. "I'm so sorry" he apologized.
The shorter finally let his emotions out and buried his face in the crook of Jungkook's neck, sobbing a couple times and sniffing a few more, realizing that this may be the last time he will have the older like this, the last time in a long time.
"I love you" Jimin whispered into his shoulder, making Jungkook's heart do all painful things. The upperclassman pressed a long kiss into his hair and tightened his hold, almost afraid Jimin would totally fall apart if he didn't.
"I know" he whispered, carding his fingers through his hair to try and calm him down. They're both going to need this break now, he had to work on himself and any issues left from his past relationships, and Jimin needed to get used to him not being around anymore especially with college coming up soon.
"This was supposed to be my favorite summer vacation" Jimin muttered when his breathing evened enough, stepping away slightly to look into his eyes and loosening his arms from his torso.
"It can still be" the taller reassured, running his thumb over his wet cheekbone.
"You won't be in it" he pointed out.
"That can be a good thing"
"Is it a good thing that I won't be in yours?"
"No" Jungkook did not waste any time to say, "But the difference is that you bring me up, and I bring you down" he pointed out.
"Will I still see you when we hang out with the others?" Jimin chose not to comment on that and sidetrack into how Jungkook is the best thing that's happened to him, only to end up reminding himself he may never have him.
"Sometimes yeah" he nodded, "I hope you know this isn't against you even if it seems that way" he reassured, a crease of worry between his thicker eyebrows as he smoothed Jimin's blonde hair.
"I'm trying Kook" he replied, his hands still curled tight into Jungkook's T-shirt. "But it's h-ard..." he said, a voice crack interfering and making him gulp down his disappointment. "Can you stay a little longer? Just one last time" Jimin asked.
"Of course cupcake" he said, settling his hand on Jimin's lower back while they walked to the front door.
They made their way inside the house and headed to Jimin's room. The shorter grabbed the remote and laid on his bed, inviting Jungkook to do the same, but not many words were exchanged since then. They were both inside their minds while their eyes vaguely roamed over the TV area, not sure they were really watching what was on the screen, but rather using it as background noise as they thought about each other and how their relationship will change from now on.
Jungkook looked down at Jimin once, catching his attention and making him look back. The taller however did not say anything and instead just hooked an arm around his shoulder and brought him closer to lay his head on his chest. They laid cuddled into each other in silence again, and soon enough, Jungkook heard Jimin's light sniffs and ran his hands in his hair soothingly as he always did.
The younger ended up falling asleep on top of him, and that's when Jungkook took his cue to leave. He gently kissed his forehead then slid from underneath, softly adjusting the pillows before tip-toeing out the room. Right as he was closing the door behind himself he found Jen at the end of the hallway removing her summer hat.
"Jungkookie?"
"Hi Jen. He's sleeping so... I'm gonna go" Jungkook briefly replied while she gave him confused look.
"Okay" she nodded, "See you" she added before he closed the front door. She looked at the food still in the kitchen the way she left it and wondered if Jimin was not hungry at all. Maybe she'll wait until he wakes up so they can eat together.
Dinner time came and Jimin still wasn't out of his room, so she took it upon herself to wake him up. She cracked the door, calling her son's name softly and surrounding the bed to get closer, glad the streetlights shined enough light into the room so she could see where she walked.
"Jimin it's time for dinner-" his mom's words died in her throat when she saw his red nose and glossy eyes. He wasn't asleep.
"What happened?" She whispered, afraid he'll break down if she was any louder.
"Nothing.." he replied, he still hadn't come out and now maybe he never will.
"What did Jungkook do to you?"
"He didn't do any-thing mom" a hiccup broke his word.
"Why don't you go wash your face, then we can talk about it" she suggested.
"I don't wanna talk about it" he denied, sniffing and letting out a deep breath.
"Alright then we can just go eat together" she tried again, to which he nodded this time.
They were sitting ahead of each other, taking lazy bites here and there. His mom was trying to find the right way to start a conversation but truth be told, this was the first time Jimin had ever seemed so sad since his father's passing.
"So... when do we egg Jeon's window" she started, "His mom will understand, she might even join"
"We don't" he weakly chuckled.
"He broke my son's heart I think we should" she cautiously said, peeking to see his reaction only to find him in shock. "Don't look so surprised I'm not that clueless of a mom" she added.
"I was meaning to tell you"
"Then tell me" she encouraged with a smile.
"Uh.. I think I'm gay?" He informed, but it sounded more like a question.
"It's okay not be sure, you know?" She reassured, earning a slow nod in response.
"I think I am but at same time I don't know if it's just because of Jungkook" he admitted.
"Is that why you were crying? Did he say something mean to you?" She asked in concern over him being bullied for this.
"No it's not that" he didn't want to give too many details because he simply didn't want to think about it, but he felt like he owed this to her. It's not everyday that you talk about these things with your child.
"Does he not like boys?" She asked, serving him more good food so he feels better.
"He's actually bi, but let's just say it didn't work out" he said with a sniff, hearing her hum in acknowledgement. "But how did you know?" He asked in turn.
"I might have known before you did baby" she smiled, "It was the number of times he was mentioned in a conversation, or how cool he is, or how annoying... Then he was coming over every now and then, and I do have eyes" she chuckled fondly. "You like him a lot don't you" she added, instantly triggering his tears again.
"My baby boy" she pouted, circling the table to hug his head against her stomach.
"It'll pass I promise" she reassured.
