She

With a heartbroken smile and a tear slipping down her cheek, she whispered sadly, "I'm lonely and there's no one here to tell me I'm not alone. There never has been. I'm trapped in this cage and someone, somewhere has got to have the key. Someone. Somewhere."

It was at this moment that the tear slipping down her cheek became a waterfall cascading down each and every part of her until she was drowning in her own sadness, and she realised swimming lessons had never taught her to stay afloat in a sea of her own thoughts. She took a deep breath and spluttered as liquid filled her lungs and her mind became an object. She could see it. It was floating along the water - pulsating, swelling, rotting. She had done this to herself. It screamed at her. The girl who lived her life in silence could now hear nothing but sound. Screaming. Crashing. Splashing.

Thunder.

Heavy water droplets came crashing from heaven. It was what she believed to be a message from God. Rain poured over her already drowning soul. God was punishing her. She took another breath. The sounds were louder than ever now. They came closer and through the water she could see bodies. They were moving, almost elegantly too, but the ghastly creatures could not be described as humans. Their backs hung over like puppets, arms raised in the air, hands dangling. The fingers were bone with no flesh, and soon, she realised that these were once lonely people too.

She was finally surrounded by others just like her. She stopped struggling to stay afloat, instead letting the creatures guide her.

The sounds stopped. She wasn't alone anymore.
