Chapter 19 - Meet the Parents

The next day, Jimmy and I took a walk around Rockefeller Center, just talking.
"Hey Jimbo?" I asked.
"Yeah?" Jimmy replied.
"I've been thinking, now that we're engaged and all that, I think it's time you meet my mom." I explained.
"I've been thinking the same thing, actually. That's a good idea." Jimmy agreed. "What about your dad?"
"My mom and dad are divorced." I said. Jimmy looked at me, and raised an eyebrow.
"They we're, like, talking at your first SNL show, right?" Jimmy asked, confused. "Why are they divorced?"
Suddenly, a horrid memory came back to me.
"My dad used to...hurt my mom. It all started when I was eight, and I walked in on my dad hitting my mom..."
*Flashback*
When I came home from school one day, I walked in on my parents screaming at each other. I felt my heart drop to my stomach because they've never fought like this before. They didn't even notice me when I walked in, and my dad punched my mom in the face.
My mom had a black eye, and she came over to me and hugged me when my dad went to work after the fight.
"What is happening?" I said in my squeaky, young voice, a tear rolling down my cheek.
"Nothing, sweetie. Do you want to spend a couple nights at Grammy's house? She misses us." My mom said.
Of course I was young, and I thought that my mom was doing that because my Grammy missed me, and not that she was trying to get away from my dad.
After I told Jimmy, his jaw dropped.
"They've been trying to get along ever since." I finished.
"Why haven't you told me about this?" Jimmy asked.
"I've tried to block out that memory for so long, and I don't really like talking about it." I responded.
"Oh, gotcha."
"So, if you don't mind..meeting both of my parents? You don't have to, it can just be my mom." I said quickly.
"No, it's okay! Your dad deserves to know." Jimmy smiled.
Once me and Jimmy got back to my house, I dialed my moms number in my phone.
She answered within two rings. "Malina? Hey sweetheart!" My mom squealed.
"Hey mom. I wanted to ask you...I know this has probably been all over the papers, but do you know my boyfriend Jim-"
"Jimmy! Yes, I know." My mom interrupted.
"Yeah, uh, we've been dating for about 8 months and we're now engaged. I was wondering, if you would like to meet him. I promise you, you will love him." I explained.
"Yes of course!" My mom squealed.
"Okay, great! Uh, if you don't mind, can dad come to your house so he can...know to?" I asked nervously.
"Of course, sweetie. How does tomorrow sound?" My mom said, sounding surprisingly calm being around my dad.
"Okay, great. Love you." I said.
"Love you too hun, bye."
I hung up, and turned to Jimmy.
"My mom is totally okay with meeting you. She sounds pretty excited." I said with a laugh, and Jimmy let out a chuckle.
*The next day*
Around noon, me and Jimmy we're on our way to my moms house. Jimmy was awfully quiet, I could tell he was nervous.
"Nervous?" I asked with a little chuckle. Jimmy nodded, and giggled.
"Hey, don't be. My mom is the most lovable mom on earth, and my dad is improved." I explained, trying to calm him down because I can see his heart beating through his dress shirt.
We pulled up a circular driveway up to my mom's house. My dads car was in front of us. Jimmy took a deep breath, and we both got out of the car. We leaped up the door steps, and knocked.
When the door opened, I saw my mother who had the happiest smile on her face.
"Hi!" She squealed, and gave me a tight hug. After she hugged me, she looked at Jimmy. "This must be Jimmy."
"Hi ma'am." Jimmy said politely with a warm smile.
"Oh please, call me Caroline!" My mom said. She shook Jimmy's hand. "Such a pleasure to meet you."
"Pleasures all mine." Jimmy replied.
When we walked in the living room, I saw my dad. When he saw me, his eyes brightened up.
"Hi, Malina." My dad said calmly, and gave me a hug.
"Hey." I said back.
"Nice to meet you, sir." Jimmy said, his voice shaking.
My dad looked at him, and nodded without a word.
"Smells great." I said, smelling my mom's chili that she always made for me as a child.
"You guys can sit down at the table if you want, the food's all done." My mom said.
Jimmy and I sat down at the dining room table. I put a napkin on my lap, and we filled up our plates when my parents sat down.
My dad sat on one end, and Jimmy sat at the other end. My mom said opposite from each other on the sides of the table. I kept looking at my dad because he was looking at Jimmy with an odd look on his face. I started to panic.
"So, you guys are engaged!" My mom said excitedly. When she said that, my dad dropped his fork on his plate.
"You guys are...engaged?" My dad said, disgusted.
"Um, yeah." I replied, starting to shake in panic.
"Are you joking?" I said angrily. "Do you have a problem?"
"Yes, I do! What the hell? You can't date...things like this!" He pointed to Jimmy. My hands were shaking in fury. I looked at Jimmy, who was biting his lip in embarrassment.
"You don't even know him yet!" I started to raise my voice.
"Trust me, I know when you bring an asshole to the dinner table."
"MARCUS!" My mom screamed. "TONE IT DOWN! JIMMY IS A NICE MAN!"
My dad stood up, and walked over to Jimmy, who was still sitting down. He looked up at my dad, scared as hell.
"What do you want from Malina?" My dad gave Jimmy the stink eye.
"I d-don't want anything from her!" Jimmy assured my dad.
"Okay, go ahead and stutter to try and convince everyone you're innocent. I know you want something!" My dad yelled, and punched Jimmy in the jaw.
Me and my mom got up with our jaws dropped, and pulled my dad away from Jimmy. I started crying as I saw Jimmy running his hand around his jaw in pain. What have I done?
