Chapter Two : Strangers
Great. I have no idea what to wear, nor do I know where exactly to go. I probably should have been asking questions rather than drooling over Vanessa earlier.
I go with my fail-safe look and put on ripped skinny jeans and a white T-shirt. I match the look with white flip flops just so I can show off my fresh pedicure.
From outside my suite, I can see the sun beginning to set. From what I learned in the information booklet, every night the main event is held at the beach, and luckily I have an ocean front view. So, it's really nothing longer than a 3-minute walk from my room. I grab my room key, slipping it into my back pocket, along with my phone before heading out the door. There are quite a few people out right now, and I'm sure they are probably heading the same place I am. I just hope it isn't too crowded so I can still find Vanessa.
My hands slip into my pockets and I sigh in content. The smell of grilled food lingers in the air and I can feel my stomach ache for a taste.
Soon, I end up on the beach and tikis stand tall and ablaze. A horn sounds and that's how I know the show is beginning. I lean back against a concession stand and watch the women dance.
The audience, myself included begins to cheer when I catch Vanessa walking up to me in my peripheral vision.
"There you are! I was looking for you," she smiles.
I swear every time I see her, its a scene out of a movie. Her feet trudge through the sand and her hair bounces with each step.
"You were?"I smile shyly.
"Yeah! I mean, I saw you came alone and figured you might want some company," she smiles before leaning over the bar.
"Do you want a drink?"
"Me? Oh, I don't drink," I shift in my stance, suddenly embarrassed. I really haven't had an opportunity to get it into trouble that most teens do. I haven't been to a party since I was ten, so where would I find time to drink or smoke?
"How come", she asks curiously. Her tone is innocent, and intrigued rather than scornful.
"Well, I mean for starters I'm eighteen-"
"Okay and", she chuckles as the bartender sets a glass in front of her.
"Aaand?" She wiggles her eyebrows, sliding the glass towards me.
I raise my eyebrows with an amused grin, crossing my arms over my chest.
"I don't take drinks from strangers, you could like drug me", I half joke.
"I'm a stranger", she gasps, placing her hand over her chest, merely exaggerating her offense jokingly.
"As much as I wish we did, we barely know each other", I smile as I take a seat on a bar stool beside her.
"What can I get you", the bartender grins at me.
"She, will have the patron blackberry margarita," Vanessa tells the man.
"Vanessa I'm still eight-"
"Eight minutes away from having the best night of your life", she interjects.
I give her a perplexed look.
"That's...not what i was going to say but... What's happening in right minutes?"
"Im so glad you asked beautiful! In eight minutes you and i are going to take these drinks and take a walk on the beach", she says confidently.
I decide to challenge that confidence and reply with,
"What if I don't wanna," I smirk.
She quirks an eyebrow, a cocky smirk forming on her beautiful lips.
"With the way you were melting over me earlier, I have a feeling you would do almost anything I say."
her voice went an octave lower than it had been, and so, me being an awkward fool, I choke on air for a solid 30 seconds while Vanessa casually pays for the drinks.
"Relax before people think you need CPR", she giggles and hands me my drink.
"T-thank you," I blush profusely.
She gets up from the bar, smiling at me as she nods her head over her shoulder, indicating for me to follow her. I follow suit, and walk by her side.
The orange sun, creates a beautiful reflection in the water parallel to us, and for a while the only thing to be heard was seagulls and peaceful waves.
We walk slowly in a comfortable silence, sipping on our drinks until she speaks up.
"So, tell me, what is an 18-year-old girl like you doing on a vacation all by herself."
I glance at her and notice the way sun highlighted her skin, the ocean reflecting in her eyes. When i look at her, i savor the moment. It would be foolish of anyone to do otherwise.
"Part of me says I'm escaping and part of me knows I'm looking for something", I reply vaguely.
"Like?"
"I don't know its just, i just graduated. I should be happy and making steps into the rest of my life. But that's not how I feel at all. I don't know if i want to go to college, and even if i did go i don't know what i would go for. There is so much pressure from my family to be something great but I feel so lost and disconnected from myself."
"Well, what is it that you want?"
"Well i used to think I wanted to be an engineer..."
"Something tells me you don't want that anymore", she chuckles
" I also could be a counselor, an artist, a designer, a writer, a photographer, - oddly I also wouldn't mind working in a circus-"
"Theoretically Y/n, all of those things could happen, but I'm asking you what you want to happen," she smiles softly.
"I wouldn't tell my parents this, not in a million years, but I really want to be an explorer. I want to travel the world and find things unimaginable! I just love the thought of history and puzzles, even problem solving, i want it all!"
I feel my face heat up, and my heart beat accelerate. Something that only happens when I'm talking to or of something i love.
Vanessa stops walking and turns to face me.
"I have something I want to show you", she grins before softly grasping my hand within hers. Leading me wherever she desired...
