Chapter Nine - 'When darkness takes over.'

‘Excuse me,’ Hermione said, shaking her head furiously as she walked into the living room with a couple of glasses and a bottle of wine. Her eyes went straight to Draco who had his feet on her table and his guitar on his lap. Hermione pushed his legs unsuccessfully, ‘my daughter knows not to lean on furniture like that unless it’s a sofa or chair. Get your feet down.’

Draco rolled his eyes but he put his feet on the ground. They had decided not to go out but stay in and drink since the weather outside wasn’t so great and there were only the five of them. His eyes roamed her body for the third time that night. She wore black skinny jeans with a white tank top that was quite figure hugging. Her lips were quite red and she had applied some eyeliner that made her eyes pop... well, her eyes were certainly popping at Draco whenever he did something wrong.

‘Are you done checking me out?’ Hermione asked, looking a little amused since Draco had said the exact same words to her when he got here. She couldn’t take her eyes off of him since he wore a button up shirt and some jeans, usually he wore a hoody.

‘Hey, Hermione, don’t you have something a bit stronger?’ the girl, Shannon, asked. She held up the wine and scrunched her nose.

Shannon was a very attractive young woman, Draco had realised, and she was very bold to everyone. Her hair came down in blonde waves to her shoulders, looking like a water fall, and her eyes were the sexiest eyes Draco could imagine. The blue was the same colour as the ocean or the sky. She had those long legs that would make any girl jealous and she flaunted them by wearing a skirt and heels. She kept the look classy rather than slutty, Draco had to admit. Her blue eyes found his and she winked at him.

Lisa agreed with Shannon, ‘get the whiskey, Hermione!’

Hermione sighed and picked up the wine to get the whiskey instead. She walked off, muttering under her breath about something that made Shannon roll her eyes. Draco sat on the sofa with Lisa on his right side. Shannon sat on one of the armchairs, her long legs crossed, and another girl that they were friends with sat opposite her on the armchair. That other girl was called Katie and she was quite short – but a ‘cute’ short. Her black hair was short too, framing the sides of her face, and she didn’t wear much make up but wore some eyeliner to draw attention to her brown eyes. She lived in the same apartment complex as Hermione.

‘You know, you girls are probably planning something,’ Draco said, as he struck cords on his guitars, ‘there’s four girls here and only one me... that seems quite suspicious, if I say so myself.’

‘Well, this was supposed to be a girls night,’ Shannon said, moving over to sit next to him. She flashed a grin at him, ‘are you nervous around so many girls?’

‘Draco doesn’t get nervous around girls,’ Hermione said as she came out of the kitchen with a bottle of strong whiskey. She started to pour some in the glasses, ‘he had many girls rushing about after him whilst at school.’

‘And you were one of them,’ Draco winked at her, ‘don’t deny it, Granger.’

‘Just play your guitar,’ Hermione rolled her eyes as she handed everyone a glass. They sipped it and Katie scrunched her nose up a little. Draco felt a warm sensation in his stomach when he drank it.

‘Play ‘My Heart Will Go On’ again!’ Katie said, excited.

Draco could feel Hermione’s eyes on him as he looked down at his guitar and stretched his fingers. He had played many songs for them since he came so his fingers were starting to hurt. They loved the titanic one the best and he guessed it was because that was his first song he had learned so he was perfect at it. Even though it was a muggle song, it was fun to learn.

He started to play, watching them as they sat back. Hermione took the arm chair that Shannon had been previously sitting on, her legs crossed and her eyes fixed on Draco’s face rather than his guitar. The others watched his guitar as his fingers strummed the familiar tune. Katie and Shannon started to hum along as Lisa quietly sang the lyrics. Draco looked at Hermione as he approached the ending of her song, his eyes found hers and they shared a moment. Hermione blushed suddenly, drowning the rest of her drink and then pouring some more for herself.

‘You are great at that!’ Shannon said, excitedly, taking his arm. She held up her drink and so did the others, ‘to Draco’s guitar playing skills.’

Hermione rolled her eyes but delicately lifted her glass up, already feeling the effects of alcohol. She joined in with the toast and then there was a silence as they sipped their drink. The thunder roared outside, making Shannon squeal a little and her hand gripped onto Draco’s arm.... the one with the dark mark, Hermione noticed as her eyes zeroed in on their closeness.

‘I’m glad we never went out tonight in that weather,’ Lisa said, glancing outside and then sipping her drink.

‘Oh!’ Hermione jumped out of her seat, putting her glass down on the table. Draco glanced at her, about to make a funny comment but Hermione just walked towards the phone, ‘Rose hates thunder! I better call up and check on her.’

‘Hermione, I’m going to put in a film, okay?’ Katie asked, moving towards her film collection.

Draco’s eyes remained on Hermione as she vaguely nodded in consent, looking at the phone and hitting some numbers. She looked so worried for Rose and Draco smiled a little, never in his life would he have imagined Hermione having a daughter and living in Australia. Of course, he knew from a young age that she would make a great mother since she was strict and bossy. Draco watched her press the phone to her ear and move over to the window to look out at the torrential rain hitting the streets of Australia. Hermione’s face rearranged itself into a frown, ‘Rose? Darling, why are you not asleep yet?... I don’t care what Grandma lets you do. You need to get changed, brush your teeth, and get into bed straight away... Rose... Rose, I mean it... yes, I’ll take you to the park again tomorrow. Okay... goodnight. I love you.’

Draco turned around when Hermione hung up the phone. He glanced at the TV and saw that Katie had put in a chick flick film and he rolled his eyes as it started up, already showing a couple that looked way too happy for it to be real. He glanced at Lisa as she got off the sofa and moved towards the arm chair instead.

‘Hermione, hit the lights,’ Shannon said, snuggling into Draco and leaning her head against his shoulder.

Hermione did as she was told and they were emerged into darkness as she then came back to sit down. She glanced at Lisa who had changed her seat and Lisa only winked at her. Hermione realised she had moved so that Draco and Hermione could sit next to each other. Sighing, she took her seat next to Draco.

‘I don’t bite,’ Draco said, when Hermione kept a huge space between them. He winked, ‘only in bed... if that turns you on.’

‘I think she gets enough of that from Michael,’ Shannon chuckled, moving closer to Draco as the film started up and they were told to shut up by Katie.

Draco glanced at Shannon, annoyance flickered on his face at that comment and Hermione only blushed as she curled up and sipped her drink. The film started but Draco paid no attention to it. He was still thinking of the biting comment that Hermione had blushed to. It made him feel a little... jealous? Was that the word?

He just couldn’t imagine Hermione enjoying that sort of thing in bed. She had really changed from their Hogwarts year and it just seemed as though she liked who she was now better than who she was in school. Draco snapped out of his thoughts as Shannon started giggling at something on the screen. He paid attention to the film and  realised it was a scene that was entirely eighteen plus.

‘Katie!’ Lisa groaned, frowning at the noises the couple of screen were making. Katie was red in the face as she looked at Lisa who shook her head, ‘this sort of thing is not okay unless it’s all girls or... you’re with a guy on a date.’

Draco raised his eyebrows, ‘don’t mind me.’

Shannon giggled again, looking at Draco as she finished off her drink, ‘I bet you get a lot of girls with just your looks.’

Hermione let out a scoffing noise before she could help it and Draco looked at her, amused. She just stared at the TV and then diverted her eyes from it when she realised the scene was still going on. Draco kept his eyes on her, watching her get redder and redder by the passing second. He stared at her, watching her eyes glancing briefly at him.

‘Draco!’ Hermione yelled out loud when the staring continued. Just as she yelled, the light from the kitchen blew out and the TV made a fizzling sound before dying out. The moaning sounds from the TV echoed throughout the small apartment as they sat in a total darkness.

‘Shit, Granger,’ Draco muttered into the darkness, smirking slightly, ‘not so loud.’

He heard Shannon giggle again and felt Hermione get up, making her way towards the kitchen in the complete darkness. Draco flinched slightly when he felt a hand, that had to be Shannon’s, creep up his leg and her lips nibbling his ear lobe.

‘I think we should just take off,’ Katie said, breaking the silence as they heard Hermione rummage around in the kitchen, ‘you guys could come and stay at mine if you don’t want to go out in the rain.’

‘I’d like to stay away over at yours, if you don’t mind,’ Lisa said, as Hermione came out of the kitchen with a candle lit and brought it over to set it on the table.

Draco turned his eyes to Shannon as she moved her hands and lips away from him. Her soft blue eyes showed the candle flame and she grinned at him as Draco raised his eyebrows. Hermione sighed when Lisa and Katie stood up. They both hugged her goodbye.

‘I really think we should get going,’ Lisa said, hugging Hermione tight.

‘Okay, I’ll see you at work on Monday then,’ Hermione sighed slightly, hugging her back. This was not the way the night was supposed to end, she thought.

Hermione walked her two friends to the door and Shannon turned back to Draco, kissing his cheek before whispering into his ear.

‘Want to get out of here?’ Shannon asked, her voice dropping as she looked into his eyes, ‘together?’

‘Um... I don’t think that would be a good idea. You’re drunk,’ Draco frowned slightly, wondering how many drinks she had had tonight. He glanced at Hermione who was just shutting the door and Shannon moved away from him and stood up when Hermione walked back to them.

Draco looked up at Hermione, thinking that she looked sort of tired and fed up now. Her eyes went to the candle that was lit on the table and then she looked at the TV which had fizzled out when the electricity went. She then looked at Shannon who hugged her goodbye.

‘I’ll see you some other time then,’ Shannon smiled at her, ‘call me, okay?’

Hermione nodded and glanced at Draco who was still sitting on the sofa like he owned it. Shannon said a final goodbye before grabbing her coat and leaving her apartment. The door shutting seemed to echo in Hermione’s ear as she turned to Draco who grinned at her.

‘Just you and me now, Granger,’ Draco commented, standing up and glancing around, ‘it’s quite romantic. Heavy rain, dim lights, silence.’

‘You need to leave,’ Hermione said, crossing her arms over her chest and looking at him, ‘don’t forget your guitar.’

‘I can’t leave you here all alone with the thunder and no lights,’ Draco shook his head, taking a step towards her, ‘what sort of man would I be if I did that?’

‘What sort of man stays in an apartment that is lit by candles only when he knows she has a boyfriend?’ Hermione asked, placing her hand on his chest mainly to stop him from coming towards her even though there wasn’t much space between them. She looked down at her hand on his chest and then back up to his eyes.

‘The sort of man that wants to feel your lips against mine?’ Draco replied, glancing at her lips, ‘the sort of man that’s missed you so much these last five years?’

‘Kiss me then,’ Hermione whispered, looking into his eyes. She forgot she was a mother. She forgot she had a boyfriend. Hermione was now forgetting everything as she looked into the grey eyes that had stayed the same even after seeing so much in his lifetime. She grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him down, ‘kiss me, Draco.’

Draco didn’t hesitate to press his lips onto hers, making a spark of electricity ignite in them even though the whole city had probably lost electricity. She pulled him closer by his shirt and opened her mouth for him almost immediately as his tongue grazed her lower lip. Draco wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her up easily so that she could wrap her legs around his waist.

The kiss soon became heated as Draco moved them over to the sofa, lying her down first. Hermione’s hands gripped his shirt like a lifeline as he kissed her. They were oblivious to the thunder roaring outside and the rain pounding against the window. Hermione and Draco forgot everything and they were, once again, teenagers.
