Seeing Beyond the Mask

I do not not own any of the characters, except my OC family and their close acquaintances. The official Narnia characters are on lend from C.S Lewis. The information about Narnia and its neighbors comes from the book; The book of Narnians, which is also not mine.

The doors to the throne room in the castle of Cair parevel were closed with a quiet finality on the words of the prophecy which Amos had spoken to us. It was as if a judge had just sentenced a criminal to death, and the doors signified the thump of the gavel, signaling that the case was closed. And although their had been no judgement per-say, I suddenly had an eerie feeling that we had been the criminals.

We all sat rigid in our chairs as an eerie silence stole over the room, sending a nerves shiver down my spine. I glanced at my four older siblings and tried to decipher what they were thinking. Were the expressions that they each portrayed actually what the were feeling, or just a mask to hid what they actually felt? I wondered if any of them were afraid like I was.

The prophets words seemed to echo like an unending chant in my head, especially the words,

"The simple believe all that they are told."

Had I really been so naive to think that my siblings wouldn't lie to me just so I would be on their side?

And now that it had been pointed out to me, I could see that part was at least was true; I did believe all I was told. But what made this prophecy any more right then what my siblings have told me?

After a bit of thought, I decided to keep an eye out for anything suspicious and discreetly look into the matter and try and discern the truth for myself.

I was unsure if what the prophet said was correct or not, but it couldn't hurt to look into it, right? A part of me didn't want it to be true, I mean if it was, my siblings and I were all doomed to die, and have our home taken away.

Suddenly I was jolted out my thoughts when I spotted the looming figure of a minotaur walking towards us and I shrank inwardly at the sight of him. Even though Lord Kalin's appearance was expected, it did not make it any easier to be in his presence. As advisor to my brother, the King, he could usually be found lurking about in one the shadows nearby. He had been around for as long as I can remember, as my brothers advisor/bodyguard ever since he became King at the age of eighteen.

I had always disliked him for some reason that I could never explain, and my siblings had always made fun of me for it, since he was one of our families closest friends. Everywhere that king Caelin went, Lord Kalin was sure to follow. And by all accounts, he was our most loyal subject, but with my childhood discomfort coming back, and the prophecy on the forefront of my mind, I was even more cautious then usual as more of the prophets words came back,

"Be wise with who you trust."

Lord Kalin bowed before us and said, "Your majesty's, I would advise against listening to any of the prophets words. For he speaks in riddles and only one who is truthful, speaks plainly."

"Does anyone of our status ever truly speak plainly, my Lord?" I asked in my head.

King Caelin nodded slowly and replied, "Yes Lord Kalin, that is so. But do you think their is any meaning in his change of direction?"

Lord kalin nodded seriously and answered, "Yes, Sire, I believe their is. You see, I have been monitoring common people for some time now, and I have discovered they are plotting something, the overthrow of the kingdom I think, and the prophet is the ringleader. It is my theory that they are planning to kill you your majesty, and possibly the rest of your siblings. Unfortunately, I have been unable to gather enough evidence to have the prophet arrested. For if I just went out and arrested him now, I believe their would be a riot, if not even a revolt."

Theirs something wrong with all that, I just can't think what it is.

"What do you suggest we do, Lord Kalin?" Asked my brother worriedly.

"Wait for now. we must allow them to make themselves known before we can act. Today was merely the first step in their plan."

I guess your probably right about that, but I wonder whose plan it is really, that's been set in motion today?

Lord Kalin then looked at the rest of us to see how we were taking what he had said, his gaze coming to rest on me last. And unless I miss my guess, he looked at me a moment or two longer then the others.

Did he see the caution in my face, or perhaps the hesitance in my eyes?

"Do you have a question, your majesty? He asked, looking at me intently.

For a moment I was scared of talking to him, but then I realized I should take advantage of his invitation and ask him a question, and perhaps catch him off guard and learn something.

"What made you start investigating the people in the first place?"

I sensed his discomfort and annoyance the instant he opened his mouth, though outwardly he remained perfectly calm, informing me that I had hit a pressure point.

"Interesting."

"Just rumors your majesty, and you know how I investigate everything to insure the safety of you and your siblings, even if it's just a rumor."

I nodded, feigning innocence, and turned to my siblings to see what was said next.

I knew that I couldn't ask too many questions, otherwise they might get suspicious. I would continue to listen for clues though, to this rapidly growing case of treason. Though it was debatable about who was actually trying to commit the crime. I also sensed that their was more to this story then what was on the surface. All of this was merely a mask to conceal the true threat, whatever it was.

-----------------------------------------------

The next day I went for my daily afternoon ride, with my horse Bastion. Today I rode west with the great river on my left as a refreshing breeze from the north came down from the mountains, blowing in a southernly direction that would eventually take it into our friend and neighbor, Archinland, who we were also related too.

It had been about 700 years since Prince Col of Narnia, son of King Frank V had colonized Archinland and become its first King, so we were only distantly related by now, but we still remained on very good terms.

To the west of us and in front of me lay Telmare, the country started by a group of strange people from another world it was said, though no one knew for sure. Regardless, we were on good terms with them also.

On my right, in the north, past the mountains, was Ettinsmore and the Wild lands of the North, which we were not friends with either of them. That was were the dumb giants and the wicked giants lived, along with all sorts of terrible beasts, which no one knew the names too.

On Archinlands left was Calormen, a desert people that had been colonized by outlaws who had fled from Archinland, who we were also allies with.

I left the Forrest not long after I started riding, and from then on it was hill country, dotted with boulders, shrubs, and small trees.

The beautiful blue of the sky was not hidden by any clouds today, seeming to make it all that much bigger to my eyes.

The air smelled fresh and sweet, as it gently flowed by me, while I trotted along on my horse.

I smiled, glad to be free of the throne room and all its problems. My first day in court had been nothing how I had imagined.

After talking about the prophet and what implications his unexpected message could mean, Lord Kalin had advised each of us to be careful from now on when we were out and about, or even when we were just in the castle. Then we had listened to a couple of other people talk that had been utterly boring, which made them not even worth mentioning.

I had wanted to ask about this "Aslan", and why he was so important, but I had already gotten a stern enough talking too for embarrassing my brother in court, I did not need, nor want, another one, just for trying to satisfy my curiosity. Though it did not seem to be any ordinary name either, since seemed to carry more power then any other, "Including my brothers", and it made made me feel all warm and cozy inside with a strange feeling of love and affection.

I had been riding for an hour or so when suddenly I spotted a figure disappearing behind a boulder about twenty yards behind me.

Although I couldn't tell what exactly it was, I do know it was some type of big cat, like a leopard or a tiger.

I quickly looked away, hoping I had not given away that I had seen it. I wondered why it was there, and if it was friend or foe.

Remembering Lord Kalin's advice about being careful, I decided to try and discreetly get rid of it. If I could make it think I did not know anything, then I had the advantage.

Unfortunately for me, cats are very fast, expert hunters, so it would be difficult to lose it.

And so, after another hour of trying, I gave up and went home. I hid and waited near the servants entrance to see if it followed me in. It did, and was immediately intercepted by another one that even seemed to know the first one, before they walked off.

Very slowly and carefully I followed them for several minutes before they came to a familiar looking door; the door to Lord Kalins office.

So, now my brothers advisor and bodyguard has taken to having me guarded and spied upon, if not both.

He's never been so protective of me before, what makes now any different? I'm sure their have been greater potential threats then just one prophet and his prophecy, that he himself doesn't even believe in, anyway.

The prophets words echoed in my mind as I thought about this;

"Beware your Majesty's, for evil walks in the shadows of this castle."
