010: Monaco

"I can't dance! David Kim is out to make a fool out of me!" Daehyun kept yelling as they stood stark still in the middle of the dance floor, with all eyes on them.

Alex could feel Daehyun's anxiety coursing through his veins. He wanted to calm Daehyun down so that the antsy fellow would stop shouting and giving him a headache, but he didn't want to draw unnecessary attention from Eunri either, so he chose to keep his mouth shut.

"Daehyun, what are we going to do?" Eunri whispered quietly to him as she looked at the crowd. Everyone was watching them expectantly. The live band had started playing, a melodic violin sequence drifting into the air.

Alex used his left hand to take her right, and slipped his right hand around her waist. He winked at her and grinned, saying, "It's time to put them dancing shoes on."

Daehyun might not have been much of a dancer, but he was. And it was all thanks to Eunri too.

Two years ago, Eunri had been inspired by the reality TV show "So You Think You Can Dance", and Alex ended up being dragged along for ballroom dancing lessons against his will. He had been so reluctant at first, but by the end of the entire course, he was more into ballroom dancing than Eunri was. He had even gotten so proficient at the Viennese waltz that their dance instructor had thought of entering them into a ballroom dancing competition. Eunri had politely declined, despite Alex's bubbling enthusiasm.

"It's time to put them dancing shoes on," he always said, right before the music started, and instinct had let the words slip out of his mouth again.

He caught a flicker of recognition—and surprise—in Eunri's eyes when she heard what he said, so it was just as well that the music went into full swing at the right moment.

Alex took the first step, leading Eunri in a familiar waltz round the dance floor. He led, and she followed. Every step felt familiar, even the feeling of her waist beneath his hand felt familiar as they moved together with the rhythm of the music. For that moment, the entire world faded away, and it was just the two of them dancing under the moonlight.

Alex and Eunri—like it had always been.

Daehyun was amazed. Amazed at the fact that he hadn't yet tripped over his own left foot. He could feel his own body sliding smoothly across the dance floor, and the awestruck expressions of his old classmates didn't go unnoticed.

"You didn't tell me you could dance like that!" he remarked, impressed at Alex's dancing abilities. After those embarrassing moves that he had seen Alex execute in the hotel room, he had assumed that Alex had no dancing genes just like him. It was a relief that he was wrong.

Out of the corner of his eye, he spied David watching them with a look of complete disbelief etched onto his face and smug satisfaction sank in.

Alex didn't reply. He couldn't, and Daehyun didn't think he would anyway, not when he was so mesmerised by Eunri.

Alex was looking straight into Eunri's eyes—and that meant that Daehyun was too. They were a rich hazel brown, and now they were sparkling under the fairy lights. He thought for a minute that her eyes looked slightly watery, but perhaps it was just the lighting that was playing tricks with him.

He watched as she followed his footsteps in perfect synchrony, moving across the dance floor with a dynamic fluidity that spoke volumes of the connection that once existed between Alex and her.

They must have been perfect for one another, but somehow, it all fell apart in the end.

Alex was lucky to have met a girl like Eunri. If only he had met a girl like Eunri instead of Jieun, then he probably wouldn't have ever let her go.

He wouldn't have let go.

David was so stunned by how Daehyun had turned the tables on him that he avoided the couple for the rest of the night. Even when they said their farewells, it was a stiff and awkward affair. Alex made it a point to give David a friendly pat on the back, just to piss him off that little bit more.

"Where did you learn to dance like that?" Eunri suddenly asked as they were walking away from David's villa down the quiet, winding road.

"Um, I took some classes before," Alex replied quickly. He wished he could tell her that she was the one who made him take those classes, but he couldn't. Not yet.

"Ah, I see. You dance really well!" Eunri turned to him and smiled warmly. Then, she fell silent and continued walking on ahead, admiring the night scenery as she went along. Above them, dozens of stars sparkled in the midnight sky.

"You think she suspects you?"

"I don't know. Maybe. I guess that's what I wanted right? To remind her of me," Alex replied softly.

He knew that the dance would probably have triggered some memories in Eunri's mind, and he hoped and prayed that it would have the desired effect. That it would make her want to come back to him.

"She thinks she was dancing with me."

"I know."

One day, he hoped, in the near future, he would be able to dance with Eunri again. This time as Alex Yang and not Lee Daehyun.

They had a couple more days left in Monaco, so they figured they should just make the most of it and see everything they could possibly see before they left. Who knew when they would be back here again?

"Take a left here."

Alex did as he was told. They emerged in front of a huge church-like building made entirely of white stone, gleaming as its pillars towered towards the heavens. He couldn't help but pause for a second to marvel at the beauty of the architecture.

"That's beautiful! What's this place?" Eunri tugged on Alex's sleeve, pulling him towards the building.

"That's the Monaco Cathedral. It's built in Roman-Byzantine style architecture. This is where all the kings of Monaco are buried when they pass on."

Alex took a step backwards. He didn't like dead people.

"Can you not be such a coward? It's just a cathedral. Most cathedrals double up as mausoleums anyway. It's not like you're going to see mummified corpse in a coffin or anything. Besides, there's something in this cathedral I think may interest you."

Alex didn't believe Daehyun, but he let Eunri drag him into the cathedral anyway. He relayed what he had been told about the history of the Monaco Cathedral to Eunri, and she looked fairly impressed with his knowledge. Alex had to admit that he was glad he was stuck in Daehyun's body and not some streetside bum's. At least Daehyun's wealth of knowledge—and plain wealth—had been useful in getting him close to Eunri again. There had to be some degree of divine providence in that.

The minute they stepped in through the doors of the cathedral, the melodious sounds of organ music filled their ears.

At the other end of the hall stood the largest organ that Alex had ever seen. It had four keyboards. Sunday mass was still going on in the cathedral, the pews filled with pious believers singing the hymns to the accompaniment of the organ.

Alex and Eunri slid in quietly into some empty seats at the back of the hall. He closed his eyes, basking in the richness of the music that surrounded him.

Daehyun was right, there was something interesting in this place. He had seen his fair share of quirky and unusual instruments in his time, but this was something new. The cathedrals in Seoul didn't have such ornate instruments.

"Told you you'd be interested."

"Let us now take a minute to bow our heads in prayer," the pastor leading mass said to the congregation. Everyone put their hands together, bowing their heads down.

Eunri did the same, and Alex followed suit.

Dear Father in heaven, this is Eunri. If you hear my prayer, please help me watch over Alex wherever he is. Tell him that I still see him in everything I do, in everywhere I go, and no matter how unwilling I am to let him go, I need to let him go now. We weren't fated to be together, and no matter how much my heart aches and how much I miss him, it's all too late for us. If only we could turn back time, then maybe we wouldn't have made the mistakes we made and we wouldn't have gotten to this point. Father, thank you too for sending Daehyun to me. There are times when I see glimpses of Alex through him, and it makes me feel better. They are so similar, yet so different. I don't know where this path will lead me, but I know that you have a plan for me, and that there will come a day when I can truly move on. Alex, I'm sorry. I miss you, and I love you. Still.

Dear God, this is Alex. Right now, Eunri is sitting right beside me. She looks absolutely beautiful, my angel from above. Thank you for that, for giving me a second chance to right my wrongs. I know I've made mistakes in the past, taking her for granted and not loving her like I should. I know that now. I don't know if waking up in Daehyun's body is all part of your plan, but I trust it is. I don't know when I will ever get my own body back, and if my plan to win Eunri back will succeed, but at least I know I've tried my best and I'll have no regrets. My only wish is that one day, Eunri and I will be able to come back to this place, hand-in-hand, even if our hair has gone white and we're all old and wrinkly, knowing that you gave us this second chance. Please help me Father, please give me the chance to grow old with the one I love...

Dear Lord, this is Daehyun. Frankly, I was angry with you when I woke up realising that someone else's soul was now within me, and I am but a prisoner in my own body. Why me? What did I ever do to deserve this? I would very much like to have my body back please, even though I've more or less gotten used to this bumbling fool cohabiting with me. To be honest, I'll probably miss him when he's gone. He's dragged me more than halfway around the world in pursuit of this girl of his, but I'm somewhat thankful that he has, because if he hadn't, then I wouldn't have met Eunri and I wouldn't have had the chance to show David and Jieun that I'm more than what they think of me. The problem now is that sometimes I get confused. I don't know whether the things I'm feeling—these confusing emotions—whether they belong to me, or whether they belong to Alex. Eunri belongs to Alex. He's the reason why I'm even here sitting next to her. I think I'm getting that mixed up from time to time. Dear Lord, what should I do? Will we ever go back to the way we were?
