Chapter Fifty Six
At the mark of the 12th hour, the students were allowed to enter the forest and retrieve as many gold pieces as possible before the hour was up. As soon as they were far enough into the forest where they couldn't see the the crowd, Hope whipped out her wand.
"Accio gold!" She called out.
Stella clapped her hand over her face while Eliza just stared at the girl in disbelief.
"Did you really think it was going to be that easy?" One of the Durmstrang students called with a laugh. "It's enchanted, or else it would be too easy!"
The other two teams ran off, leaving Stella red in the face with anger at the mocking tone of the Durmstrang boy, Eliza red in the face from embarrassment, and Hope with a bright smile.
"Accio gold, really, Hope? Really?" Stella turned to her younger cousin. "What were you thinking? You couldn't possibly think that was going to work!"
"Of course not!" Hope laughed. "But you see how fast the other teams left, right? They're not worried about us, they're worried about each other, which gets them out of our hair. You're welcome by the way. I may not be in Ravenclaw, but I'm not stupid."
She walked ahead of the two girls, using the tip of her wand for lighting. When she realized the two of them weren't following her, she turned around to face her.
"Well, standing around isn't going to help either, honestly you two, let's get moving. I have no idea where I'm going through here."
"I do." Eliza spoke up. "I've been through here plenty of times."
Stella turned to her twin. "Who are you?!"
"Look, Mum and Dad all sorts of stories about them running around here during the night when they were younger than we are now. I wanted to see those stories for myself, from the unicorn herds to the creatures that are going to help us now."
Hope placed her hands on her hips, while Stella just stood in complete disbelief of her sister's actions.
"Well, what is it? Don't leave me hanging here."
"Nifflers." Stella answered walking along. "We're going to need nifflers."
"Right," Hope nodded. "Thy are attracted to shiny things, so how do we get them to help us?"
"By having something shinier than gold." Eliza said.
"And that it?" Hope was looking back and forth between the twins as they continued to brainstorm.
"Rhodium." Stella said with a grin as she dug into her pocket and pulled out a pocket knife that her father had gotten for her when she was younger.
Hope stared at her for a moment. "You just..uh...carry that on you, Stella?"
"Well, yeah. They didn't say we couldn't." Stella said opening up the blade and walking ahead. There was a spot where the thick trees allowed the rays of the sun to shine through. She stopped just before it and allowed the blade to shower under the light, shimmering and reflecting the light perfectly. "And now we wait."
"Not for long."
The girls heard shuffling behind them and turned around to see a couple of nifflers, exiting from a small burrow in the ground.
"Oooh look, they're so adorable! I just want to hold one..." Hope said.
"Seems like you'll get your chance." Eliza said picking one up and tossing it over to Hope. She caught the small rodent swiftly in her hands as Stella placed the knife away and grabbed another that had run over to her.
"Let's get a move on then." Stella said. "As soon as they spot something shiny, we'll know because they'll flip."
Hope followed her cousins with the niffler in her arms, it remained settled for quite sometime, until it began to fuss, trying to get away.
"Let it go, Hope, it's spotted a gold piece, I think." Stella told her. Hope did as she was told and released the niffler. The creature took off, only a short distance before it came upon a gold piece and made an odd squeaking noise in triumph.
Eliza ran over and picked up the niffler before taking the piece of gold from it. It was a gold coin with the Triwizard Tournament written over it.
"Our first gold piece, ladies." She smiled at them.
"We need to check if it's leprechaun gold." Stella said.
"Er...how?" Eliza asked.
"Leave that part up to me." Hope snatched the piece up from Eliza's hands. "That's my specialty."
"How is it your specialty?" Stella asked her.
"Do you two forget who my dad is and who our uncle is? Back before Uncle George and Dad opened up shop, they made a bet with a man, called Ludo Bagman at the Quidditch World Cup. They won the bet as they predicted the game win, and Ludo had to pay it up. But he paid them in leprechaun gold. Dad and Uncle George were pissed because he cheated him out of their winnings that they were going to use to open up the shop. Since then, Uncle Bill showed them how to tell the pieces apart from real galleons, because the goblins at Gringott's know key signs to look for."
She made her way to the nearest light and stood there for a minute examining the piece.
"Dad made sure I learned so no one paid with any fake pieces in the shop. And here is the sign that this piece is fake."
Stella and Eliza moved closer and stared at the piece.
"I don't see anything." Stella said in an impatient huff.
"That's because you're impatient." Hope told her. "Look right here, see that little scuff mark. It's extremely faint, but you can feel it if you use your nail just right."
She grabbed Eliza's hand and moved the girl's fingernail across a small area.
"Did you feel it?"
"Yeah, but just barely."
'Exactly, ever see a goblin's fingernail, they're all long and gross, but they definitely come in handy." She chuckled to herself at her pun until Eliza and Stella silenced her with a look. 'Alright, alright, just trying to lighten the mood.
Hope cleared her throat. "Anyways, the coins are marked so they are able to feel it. Goblins assigned serial numbers to each and every coin so that they know which goblin minted the coin. Leprechaun gold doesn't have this nick in it because it isn't minted by goblins, and it's missing a few minor details that most people wouldn't pay attention to. So ladies, this piece is fake."
"Dammit!" Stella stomped her foot. "We just wasted all this time-"
"For good reason." Eliza told her. 'Now we know how to separate the pieces, the other teams may not know how, which gives us an advantage. Now we can move on. Let's go."
They watched as Hope slipped the gold piece into her pocket.
"I thought you said it was fake." Stella said.
"It is." Hope grinned. "I have other plans. You'll see, don't worry about."
