Chapter Eighty Five
Hope stood near the front of the arena, adjusting her shirt as Stella and Eliza stood on either side of her. Once her attire was to her liking, she decided to pull her hair back into a ponytail. A bright smile was on her face, a definite opposite reaction compared to her cousins, who wore blank expressions. In the background, she could hear her family members calling out for them, especially her great-grandfather bringing her to chuckle a couple of times. She had made note of the Go Hope shirt that he wore after he pointed at his chest several times.
The girl remained confident as she dug into her pocket and held the fake coin in between her fingers. She turned it over and over glancing over at the other teams that were nervously looking around. So far, everything appeared calm. The arena had been transformed to a rocky terrain that reminded her of the stories that Harry had told her when they brought in the dragons. In the center, three circles had been drawn, not very big, but begin enough for the selected teams to stand in.
Nothing had been revealed just yet, but Hope was convinced she was right. If everything she had pieced together was correct, she would be so incredibly proud of herself. But she couldn't be one hundred percent sure. Finally, McGonagall approached all of them in the arena and instructed each team to stand in the circles provided.
"Hope, speak up now," Stella told her. "Tell us what the hell is going on? We have the right to know!"
"Calm down, I've already told you that it's going to be fine," she said before looking up at the stands. She could see her family and then she saw Fergus and Henry standing beside each other. She flashed them a smile and a wink before turning to Stella with a grin.
"You worry too much, Stella, do you two honestly believe that I would let anything bad happen to you?"
"Something bad is going to happen to you if you don't tell us-" Stella's threat was interrupted when McGonagall explained the third and final task.
Dragons would be unleashed into the arena and it was the task of the students to remain in their circles and deflect the dragons. If they stepped out of the circles they would automatically lose.
"Is that what you figured out?" Eliza whispered to Hope. "Is that what you thought it was."
"Uh no," Hope shook her head. "I did not think that was going to be it. But hey, this isn't such a bad thing, right? You two are experts when it comes to dragons!"
"I'll kill you!" Stella lunged at her but Hope quickly hid behind Eliza in the circle as McGonagall wished them all good luck.
They were told they had to last a total of ten minutes inside the circle, which didn't seem so bad in Hope's head but the others did not seem convinced.
"Magic hardly works on dragons!" Stella told them. "This is bad! They're going to come right at us!"
She grabbed Hope by the shoulders and shook the girl. "Why aren't you panicking?!"
Hope shrugged. "Takes a lot of energy."
"They didn't say how many dragons were going to be released...did they?" Eliza swallowed as the three girls glanced over in the direction when they felt the ground shaking tremendously beneath their feet.
Turning around they spotted several dragons that just flew onto the scene.
"This is going to be complicated," Hope sighed.
"How...how are those dragons just being let loose like that?!" Anora growled immediately standing up. "I haven't seen any handlers. The girls can't last in their circles for ten minutes...no one down there can...even we wouldn't be able to do something like that!"
Eleanor looked over at Fred with a worried look as the entire task seemed like just a suicide mission.
"We need to get them out of there-" She began until she felt a hand rest on her shoulder. She glanced up her grandfather who was looking straight out at the arena.
"Have some faith, Ellie, look how confident Hope looks right now."
"Well, she's the only one!" She said with a worried look. " Hope is brave and I know this, but she can be naive, Grandpa. I don't want her to get hurt because she's feeling confident-"
"Just watch."
Stella pulled out her wand quickly, along with Eliza as the two tried to remember everything their parents had taught them during their time living in the Dragon Sanctuary. Of course, they had never been faced with such a situation but they had to do something. As soon as the dragons were unleashed, they could make out several of them. A Chinese Fireball...a Hungarian Horntail...they swarmed around their circle, snapping their jaws in the direction of the children.
Already two students had broke from the other circles. One from Durmstrang and one from Ilvermorny as the students ran off screaming. Stella began the deflecting spells knowing that the dragons wouldn't be affected much. It took a team of handlers to subdue a dragon and they were highly talented and experienced. Even though they had grown up on the sanctuary, they weren't experienced enough for that kind of task. Especially with just the two of them.
Eliza began casting shield charms to avoid spitfire and any other attacks, while Hope remained standing in the middle with a calm expression. She hadn't even reached for her wand as she continued to look at the coin.
"Hope, what are you doing?"
"Put your wands away," Hope told them. "There's no need for it."
"What? Are you mental?!" Stella spat at her. "I don't know if you noticed but there are dragons all around us-"
There was another scream as another Durmstrang student folded, leaving one left. Moments later, the two Ilvermorny students ran off as they were nearly taken out by the swipe of a dragon tail.
"There's no way we can win this," Eliza said. "This is too much! It's too much of a leap from the other two."
"That's the point!" Hope smiled. "Don't you see? That's the whole purpose, it's supposed to be bigger and scarier than the rest but-"
"Hope, we're getting out of here, the tournament isn't worth it!" Stella said grabbing Eliza and Hope by the wrist and stepping out the circle. Eliza stepped out with her but Hope jerked her arm back and pulled out her wand.
"No, I'm not leaving," she replied. "I know I'm right."
"What is she doing?!" Eleanor was pretty close to climbing into the arena as she watched Hope remain behind in the circle, leaving her and the boy from Durmstrang as the last ones standing in the arena. Although the two found themselves surrounded by dragons. The people in the stands were protesting calling the third task a load of rubbish and telling the champions to run. It was the final straw for the Durmstrang boy as a flame shot only feet from him. He dropped his wand and ran off.
Hope continued to observe, watching as none of the dragons seemed to pursue any of those who ran off. Now that she was the last one in the arena, they all had their focus on her. She planted her feet firmly into the dirt beneath her as she remained still.
The dragons were closing in on her but she continued to focus her own gaze on the coin in her hand and a smirk on her face.
Eleanor was close to being permanently sedated in the stands as she could no longer see her daughter as she was fully surrounded by the dangerous beasts. Suddenly, all the dragons opened fire.
"No!"
