He wasn't overly surprised as he was walking past command central to find one office light still burning through the night. The rest of the building, rest of the camp was mostly dark and silent by now.
It was christmas, even with the world ending humanity still finds a way to celerbrate. Most of the hoildays and birthdays that was imporant to the people were kept and celerbrated in their own ways. Decorations were treated with better care and fake plants were used more as a christmas tree than an actual tree now. Gifts were simply suplies the person needed or something that was unused by the first owner and given away to something who needed it or could make use of it. Nothing was wasted and while food wasn't as fancy as it would have been before hand, everyone still made each meal special in it's own way.
Home brewing had always been a skill mankind had kept and bad, homemade booze helped keep the cheer in all during the cold winters.
But even when some were chosen for sentry duty on christmas day, they all found a way to still celebrate the day.
And Shinya wasn't going to allow a certain sulking captain to miss out on such a day.
He had a feeling he'd find him in his office long before he came to check. His clueless friend had barely noticed the decorations placed around buildings and fake plants in the hallways. The colourful lights hanging from the ceiling that were never turned on or even worked but still placed up for decoration. He'd barely noticed them at all and simply frowned when he found something trying to pin something to his office door.
Shinya purposely pinned the poor gingerbread prop man back on to the door after watching his friend rip it off. He was half hoping that all the little clues and all the excitement and joy from the soldiers would add on to hinting towards the creeping day of Christmas.
He simply forgot how much of a dummy his friend was when it came to noticing the small details that weren't deemed important to his life goals.
Not even bothering to knock he slips inside said office and kicks the door closed behind him as his hands take great care not to drop the plate of cookies. Half a day old as he stole them from a group of young soldiers, they had baked two sets and they wouldn't miss the four stolen by him. It was keeping them safe and from anyone else's grabby hands that was the hard part of his day so far.
"The day you knock is the day I'd finally accept we've lost this war" Guren bitterly commented as he didn't even bother to remove his gaze from the papers in his hand.
Shinya simply chuckled as he didn't expect much of a warm welcome and would truly assume his friend had a fever if he did give a friendly greet towards him. Instead he happily made his way towards the desk without any hesitation as always.
"If I wanted someone to ruffle my feathers than I would have paid a visit to that brother's of yours or the brats" Guren grumbled out as he took notice over a thigh coming in the lines of his sight as the other man simply sat on the edge of his desk without care.
"I'm a little insulted that you've placed me on the same level as my brother. I thought you liked me better" Shinya pouted as he crossed his right thigh over his leg, tapping his foot absentmindedly in the air.
"Why are you here?" Guren asks instead, not even bothering to try and cheer the man up before him or bother with his own sulking games.
"I've brought us cookies to share. As long as you still keep those two bottles of beer in your middle drawer" Shinya answered with a bright and cheerful smile as he held the plate of cookies under the other's face, letting him having a up front view to them.
"I do but they're for celebration only" Guren pointed out as he sent a cautioned look towards his friend for his overly smiley expression.
"And today is a day to celebrate. Check the date" Shinya smiled back, pulling the plate back to his thighs and nodding for him to do as said.
"The 25th of December. What's so important about that?" Guren mumbled back with a confused frown, his brows scrunched together as he tried working out what he wasn't seeing.
"It's Christmas. Everyone else is celebrating apart from you. So, I decided to bring Christmas to you as best as I could. Merry Christmas, Guren. You've spent another fabulous year with me and now you'll spend another one" Shinya smiled warmly as his sparkled, the plates of cookies held out once more in a peace offering between them.
"I might as well throw myself to the vampires mercy now" Guren sighed as he rolled his eyes, pretending a fate to the vampires were much nicer than being stuck with him for another year.
"Don't be a Grinch" Shinya huffed back with a pout.
"I play the part so well" Guren grinned back, rather amused of himself.
"Grab those beers and have a cookie. My joyful presence will chase the Grinch right out of you" Shinya smirked back as he wiggling his eyebrows, ready to shove all his joy down his friend's throat to make him enjoy the rest of the day.
"Don't think so highly of yourself" Guren scoffed back.
But he did as he was ordered and even opened both bottles up instead of leaving his friend to struggle opening his own like he's always done before. His eyes drifting towards his calendar once more while his friend squeals in delight over the cookies motherly love taste to them.
Christmas, he hadn't even noticed the day was upon them or that everyone else had left him behind to enjoy the day together.
His gaze soon landing back on the bubbly and affectionate man on his desk who seemed delighted over the open bottle in his hand as if it was the greatest gift ever given to him.
Next year, they'd spend Christmas in a way that really would get his friend to outshine any star in the sky from pure happiness and cheer alone.
But first he had to enjoy the Christmas given to him right now.
