Chapter Five
"Let's see your timetable, Kenzie," Niska said, holding out her empty hand as she simultaneously slipped her bag over her shoulder, the bag stopping just shot of her hip. I fished around in my back pocket for the small square of paper that contained my timetable. Yes, I lost a sheet of paper in my back pocket, the reason for this being that I folded it up stupidly small and ended up misplacing it. Okay, so there were downsides to having unlimited access to magic, like loosing things.
Eventually, I found the small square or paper and handed it over to Niska, receiving an eyebrow raise and a little shake of the head in response. It took her several long seconds to unravel the square of paper completely, Joel watched on beside her, tapping his fingers against his arm as he waited. "You're in our Drama class first! Cool, Jason is a great teacher, you're gonna love him!" Niska said, handing back the timetable.
I slipped the timetable back in my pocket, only folding it twice so I wouldn't misplace it for a second time. I may have memorised the majority of my timetable, but I didn't exactly look at the room numbers, they were just as important as the lessons themselves, but I hate numbers so much.
Niska pushed Joel in the chest, forcing him to turn around and shuffle his way out from behind the row of seats. With my bag resting on my right shoulder, I followed the two of them, shuffling past the chairs and tables. For a school with very few pupils, they had a stupid number of tables and chairs in one classroom. You could hardly move without walking into a chair, not that I walked into one, of course not.
After escaping the death trap that was the rows of chairs and tables, Niska and Joel led me out of the room and into the corridor outside which was full of students heading to their first classroom of the day. Most of them looked like the Walking Dead, scraping their feet along the floor, their backs bent and their heads directed towards the floor. I suppose Mondays really don't agree with most people, I kind of liked them, though, then again, I never had to get up early to go to school before so I expected that to change over time.
Turns out, Niska wasn't lying about the Drama teacher, Jason, he was a pretty cool teacher, then again, he was the second teacher I met so I couldn't make a universal judgement, but it did bode well. Anyway, Jason, on first meeting, looked like a student more than a teacher. He was wearing a blue and white check shirt, the buttons were undone to reveal a plain white T-Shirt underneath, he also wore dark blue denim jeans and a pair of white converse. Seriously, Jason was perhaps the most unlike teacher, teacher ever. Or at least his clothes didn't suit those of a normal teacher, actually, none of him did.
"Jason! This is Kenzie, our new victim," Niska laughed, grabbing me by the forearm and practically dragging me over to the teacher. I had only known her for a matter of minutes and she was already dragging me around like a rag doll. Judging by her behaviour, I was assuming we were friends, but she could have meant anything by it so I didn't know what to think.
"Ah! Our new Thespian! I hope you are ready to enter our Drama world or at least classroom," Jason joked, clasping his hands together stupidly loud, were we in the Canadian mountains he probably would have brought an avalanche upon us.
"Well, considering I'm already in the classroom, I think I've passed the first test," I joked. So, maybe sassing a teacher wasn't the smartest thing to do on my first day at a new school, but it just slipped out. Honestly, I did not intend to walk into that classroom and talk back to a teacher, I don't even know where it came from. Sass is not something I used often, though when I did it was usually unsuccessful.
"True, true. I think you'll fit in just fine here. As long as you don't talk back to the other teachers, most of them are not as forgiving as I am," Jason smiled, threading a thumb through his belt loop. I could do nothing but furrow my eyebrows at him, thoroughly confused by his response. Most teachers would murder you for even looking at them funny, yet Jason just brushed it off. I suppose you get the one Jellyfish in a sea of piranha's.
Niska once again grabbed my arm and dragged me across the room, it was as though she would rather drag me than actually talk to me, strange considering she didn't strike me as the quiet type. More of the 'you look at me the wrong way, I'm taking you down' type. Joel on the other hand, who had not said two words to me since we met, suited the quiet type. If he knew you, then he could talk for hours, but if he didn't then he kept to himself until he found out everything he needed to know to make a decision on future friendships.
Before you get the wrong end of the stick, I was not judging Joel or Niska on their appearances, no way in Santa's workshop. But the way they acted, the way they spoke to others told me all I needed to know. That and I may have peaked at the lists when Papa wasn't paying attention before I left. Granted, I didn't know who I was looking for, but I knew the name of the school so I just checked out my year group and low and beyond, Niska and Joel's names were there. I didn't expect to meet them on my first day, though, that was just a weird coincidence. Or fate, or, well, whatever.
Anyway, Niska gestured for me to put my bag up on a rack at the far end of the room, something I didn't think schools did, but it was a drama class so it was understandable. "Right my little Thespians, take a seat and we shall begin our lesson!" Jason said. Niska took a seat on the floor next to Joel, folding her legs under her body so she was resting mainly on her knees. It seriously didn't look comfortable. I went for the classic crossed legs in front of the body, much more comfortable, though I did loose feeling my butt.
"Okay, so this term we are going to be working on a Christmas piece." There was a simultaneous groan throughout the room. "I know, I know, we're only in October and we have yet to have Halloween. But, I want this to be a huge, almost showcase of your talent, something original. I don't want a classic nativity or family gathering, I want it to be different. If I see one piece from any of you that is cliché then I'm drop kicking you to Mars, without a space suit! The best performance will have the opportunity to perform at the Christmas fair at the end of the year!"
"Is that all we get out of it? To perform at the fair no one even goes to? " A kid I didn't know said, his hand barely even going above his head.
"Is that all? No, Antaeus, that is not all. If everyone in this room can surprise me and produce something of a decent quality then I shall put on one of the best Christmas parties anyone in this school has ever seen!"
"Doesn't seem like much of a prize to me," Antaeus muttered, he looked as though he was saying to the person beside him, but the volume said otherwise. His intention was clear, he wanted the entire class to know what he thought about Jason's prize for the drama piece. Not that it could be considered a prize, it was supposed to be a bit of fun, why he was taking it so seriously I have no idea.
"I heard that, Ant. If you'd rather sit out on this and study maths in my lessons that is fine with me, that just means more cake and cookies for me at the party."
"I didn't say I didn't want to join in!"
"Right, well, now that that is settled, let's move on to groups. You all have your groups from last term and I really can't be bothered to change it up so you can stay with the same people. Kenzie, I'm gonna put you in with Niska and her gang of ruffians, not because you've already met, but because they are one person short compared to the other groups. You having met already was a weird coinkydink," Jason said, shrugging his shoulders, looking as though he really didn't care about what was happening. Honestly, that was the general feeling I got from him, but he didn't ask questions, got to straight the point, and didn't care if you spoke back so I quite liked the guy. "Get going then!"
I unfolded my legs and stood up, my calves feeling a little like jelly, even though we hadn't been sat down for very long. Niska began the task of untucking her legs from under her, a task that should have been easy, but she made it look impossible. After several seconds of watching her struggle, Joel reached down and grasped her hand, pulling up until she was standing, albeit unsteadily. From there, everyone almost gravitated into their little groups. It was strange to watch, the groups just kind of found themselves, there was no organisation to it whatsoever. In a way, it was nice to see.
With the groups having have found themselves, conversation began to fill the room, most of it being completely irrelevant to the task at hand. I couldn't understand how these people got anything done if they had the attention span of a wasp. Honestly, it was as though the moment a task was set, they would do anything and everything to ensure they didn't have to do it. Even it meant talking about something stupid, like Halloween costumes. Yeah, seriously, some random guy I didn't know was asking people who they were going to dress up as for Halloween, a question that I was completely oblivious to.
Being completely isolated and away from, well, everyone, I had never experienced Halloween beyond a few scary films that Papa had picked up on his travels. The idea of dressing up was a completely new one to me, but one I thought could be quite enjoyable if I got it right. If not, then it was pointless. "So, newbie who sort of looks like Elsa, what are you dressing up as Halloween?" I got asked.
"Never really thought about it, to be honest," I replied, unzipping my snowboarding jacket and shrugging it off my shoulders. Granny was right, it was too warm to wear it, oh well, it looked cool, though.
"You've never dressed up for Halloween?" Niska asked, leaning on one leg and placing a hand on her hip as though she didn't believe me.
"Nope, I've lived in the Canadian mountains for most of my life, we're pretty isolated up there so all I've ever done for Halloween is watch a cheesy movie."
"Wait, you're from Canada?"
No.
"Yeah. I don't have the accent because I only had my parents around and they're both English."
So I was lying. Who really cares? I mean, it wasn't as though I could tell them straight up that I was from the North Pole and that my dad was Santa Claus. One, they wouldn't believe me and two, I'm not supposed to expose the secret. If people figure it out on their own, then that's their problem, not mine. Or at least I hoped that was the rule, I don't really know. Grandpa tried to explain this to me, but I didn't pay any attention, the majority of it is just common sense anyway. So, I suppose, it was a test of my common sense rather than anything else.
"I do not hear Christmas planning going on from over there! Niska, you better not be leading Kenzie astray. I don't want a repeat of Joel," Jason said, looking up from his laptop for a split second.
"Trust me, Jason, Joel was already corrupted, this one might take a bit of work," Niska smiled, tilting her head towards me as she spoke. Personally, I don't think she'll be able to corrupt me since my ability to listen and follow orders is minimal. She can sure try, though, I had no problems with that.
"I don't care, Nisk, just get on with planning. I want a half-decent plan by the end of the lesson and you don't have long left."
"Fine," Niska said, spinning round to face us, "so what're we doing this thing on then? We can't do anything already done so that's my plan out the window."
"What about something scary? I suggested. Everyone turned around to look at me like I had just spoken French or something. That was not the case, I was speaking English it was just that it sounded too odd to be true. Yeah, a scary Christmas performance wasn't exactly completely sane, but it was something and something is always better than nothing.
"Huh?" was the only response I received.
"Cliché Christmas love stories and happy family stories are over done, so what about a Christmas gone wrong? Like Krampus, but without the big, scary clown thing."
"Not bad. Scary Christmas it is."

A/N - A new update! What is this? Ehehehe!! I don't think we're going to get to Christmas by Christmas since the story is in October and we're in December, but we'll get there eventually, just hang on...
Anyway, we have met Jason, the chillest Drama Teacher of all time! He will play somewhat of important role later on in the story, particularly with Kenzie's decision. Niska is an interesting character and we will hear more from Joel! Eventually.
