Last breath of life

The sea was calm, there were no rocks in sight, and everyone was relaxing on the top deck of the colossal Titan cruise ship. I the captain was there in the wheelhouse yelling out to my assistant to keep steering straight ahead, and to more importantly get me my double shot, extra sugar, flat white with not too much milk, one teaspoon of cinnamon and that it must be exactly 92.6 degrees. Only two more days until we would arrive at the beautiful beaches of Brazil, where I could finally get out of this steamy, dusty wheelhouse and instead get a tan while sipping Pina coladas by the clear, sparkling ocean.

I got all caught up in my exciting thoughts about Brazil that I forgot that I was the captain. I was supposed to let my assistant know to make a sharp right turn because there were many sharp rocks straight ahead of the ship! But it was too late...

I was yelling and screaming like a headless chicken trying to get my assistants attention. 'Sharp right, sharp right, we are going to crash!' I shouted in terror. My assistant could not hear my warning calls over the coffee machine.

I had to think fast, many lives were at steak and everyone was counting on me. I rushed to the steering wheel and slammed the emergency alarm button while attempting to spin the wheel away from the dangerous rocks.

Crash, thump, crunch! The whole ship went silent. The Titan swayed violently sideways, and all the passengers were struggling to hold on. I gathered my crew and we started to prepare the lifeboats. I lead the passengers into the lifeboats one by one acting as calm as I possibly could. The Titan was not going to stay afloat much longer, and the water was slowly rising. The passengers were swarming into the small, dirty lifeboats. I was starting to worry if there were enough lifeboats for everyone.

All the passengers and crew were now in the lifeboats. The water was now up to my waist. I was just about to step into the last lifeboat available when I heard a cry of desperation. A woman was limping while carrying her young terrified child. 'Wait, please, I beg of you don't leave without us!' The weak woman called out to me. I got the woman and her child onto the lifeboat thinking that it could still take me too, but I was wrong. The lifeboat was full, and as I turned my head briefly for a second, I turned around to see the lifeboat slowly floating away without me and got further and further into the distance. A small tear crawled down my cheek as I knew that no one was going to save me, and the lifeboat would never return. The water was up to my chin and I knew that these were my last breaths of life at the age of only 24.

I never imagined my life coming to an end in this way. I had still not had enough time on this earth to create my own family, get married, travel the world, grow old and die alongside my beloved wife together in peace.

I took my last breath of life- giving air. I could feel my life being drained out of me as I fell deeper and deeper into the ocean. Memories filled my head until everything went black and I closed my eyes for the final time.

I hope that I can be just like my great grandfather, loyal, brave and selfless. I am going to continue his legacy and make a similar ship called the Titanic and it will never ever sink.

I hope that you enjoyed this short story enough to spoil it with lovely comments and votes!! This story was one of my pieces of writing from last year and I hope that you can see a change (hopefully a good one!) in my writing and my writing style, let me know your opinion! Criticism is okay but not too harsh as I have a bad habit of taking everything to heart, and when I look at this writing now, I am not overly happy with it!! Thank you so much for reading, have a fantastic day!
