Chapter 12 ( Pumpkin Pie)
Third Person P.O.V.
Connie: Play Ball!
Connie shouted from the side lines as the game started. Without even being told, Connie kept track of the scores with the help of another holo Pearl. First up at the plate was Steven and our holo Pearl was the pitcher. Steven looked determined as he gripped his bat and tilted his helmet. The holo Pearl had a blank expression but without a doubt it had near perfection on it's side. It reared up, throwing the ball at a clean angle which Steven as Steven attempted a swing but missed it. Garnet caught it in her mitt.
Garnet: Strike One!
Amethyst: Come on Steven.
Amethyst cheered on. Going back into a focused state, Steven faced the holo Pearl one more as it threw another near perfect angle but this time with the use of his powers Steven created a bubble shield at just the right angle which called the thrown baseball to bounce upward. Steven used the opportunity to use the balls slow descent to his disadvantage and hit it clear across the field. He ran for the first base as soon as the ball had gotten far away from him and the holo Pearls were after the ball in no time. Steven managed to get to the second base before he saw he couldn't risk bolting for the third base, only to be tagged out by the other holo pearls. Steven looked over to Peridot who gave him a thumbs up.
Peridot: That human was right. Using our powers does make the game more fun.
Peridot said as she reared up at the plate. She was excited no doubt, using her metal powers to control a metal bat. The holo Pearl on (Y/n)'s team studied Peridot for a moment before throwing a strong pitch her way. Peridot was not prepared for such a fast ball and swung to late at the pitched ball and missed. She looked a bit disappointed. Even if she did use the bat with her hands, a real bat metal bat was too heavy and too tall for her to steady. Also, she required tooo much concentration to keep her bat afloat. Still, she was sure that she'd hit the ball the second time but by the third ball she was deemed out. She grunted as she and Amethyst switched places at the plate.
Amethyst: Time to mash it up!
Amethyst said as she put her hair up in a ponytail. Amethyst's biggest problem was her timing. She either swung too early or was trying to find some clever way to incorporate her powers into her play and would fail at that and she struck out in no time.
Amethyst: Dang it.
Amethyst said as she dragged her bat behind her as Pumpkin came up to the plate.
He happily barked and to the surprise of many, managed to steady a wooden bat in his mouth. Upon seeing this, (Y/n) figured he could get Pumpkin out easily and have his team bat to score some points. He came up with a plan.
(Y/n): Holo Pearl, switch out. I'll pitch this one.
The holo Peal merely stepped off of the pitcher's mound, handing the ball off to (Y/n).
(Y/n) was no pitcher but he learned a thing or two about it from the captain of his old baseball team. Deciding to throw a curve ball at Pumpkin because of his stature was a good idea as Pumpkin had the power to bat but wasn't fast enough to adjust his swing in time and thus missed the first pitch.
Garnet: Strike One!
Garnet roared. Pumpkin reasserted himself. He was onto (Y/n)'s strategy and reasserted himself for the next pitch. (Y/n) threw a fastball, making the ball bounce closer towards the ground and when Pumpkin was concentrating, he nearly hit the ball dead on but his swing was short an inch or too.
Garnet: Strike Two!
Pumpkin was sure of (Y/n) now. (Y/n) was also sure of Pumpkin. (Y/n) knew that Pumpkin would hit the next ball....or would he? He'd have to do something like that and so, on the third pitch, (Y/n) brought out his own power, the power of distraction.
(Y/n): You know, I've been trying to find the perfect pumpkin for a pie. I think you'll do.
(Y/n) said slyly. Pumpkin immediately lost all concentration and was now panicking at (Y/n)'s words before darting off but before he did (Y/n) used his confused state to sneak a pitch right past him that Garnet caught
Garnet: Strike Three! Your out!
Peridot: Hey! That's not fair.
Peridot objected.
(Y/n): Yes it is. I said everyone is allowed to use their powers and while my powers aren't as physical or mental like everyone else's, a verbal "power" or ability still counts.
Peridot didn't reply as she had ran off to calm down Pumpkin and bring him back to the game. (Y/n)'s team was now doing a full rotation at the bat. Lapis was up first against the other team's holo Pearl. Lapis didn't have any worry as she stood in position, waiting to strike. She stared the holo Pearl into it's red eyes. As if they were performing a mind reading session on each other, the holo Pearl had threw the ball at the blink of an eye. Lapis steadied her bat and it looked like she had a clear shot but out of nowhere a gush of water appeared behind her, forming into a giant solid bat that struck the ball with great force, sending it flying across the diamond and into the corn fields. Lapis merely brought out he wings and flew over at he base with a home run.
Connie: Wow Lapis, good job for boosting the score.
Connie said as she began to write down numbers.
The team gave Lapis a round of high fives when she came back to the home plate.
Greg:That was awesome Lapis.
Pearl: Very well done.
(Y/n): Nice trick.
Lapis: I know you didn't see it (Y/n) but-
(Y/n) politely interrupted Lapis as he held up a finger and pointed to his right ear.
(Y/n): I may not have saw it but I heard it.
Lapis gave a smile before (Y/n) patted Greg on the back. It was his time to bat.
Steven: Go Dad!
Steven cheered from across the field.
Peridot: Don't cheer for the other team Steven.
Steven: Whoops......sorry Dad.....
Steven whispered back at us.
Giving Greg a few words of encouragement, (Y/n) helped him to hold the bat and stand in the proper position for a better swing.
(Y/n): Just relax Greg. Just imagine your riding the space train to the cosmos and the ball is nothing more but a shooting star coming your way. The bat is your guitar and your going to hit the ball into oblivion.....just don't forget to make a wish.
