Love Like You

Amelia sighed in sadness as the world conference reached its end. The young nation gathered up her stuff (paperwork, notes, etc.) and started heading for the door. An unnaturally sad aura hung over the American as she walked down the halls of the world meeting building. Many nations paused their walking as she passed by them each of them wondering what was wrong the usually oh so chipper American.
America guessed her sad mood had originated from the meeting they had all just been in. She had spent a better part of the meeting observing the couples among the nation's of the world. Sweden and Finland. Germany and Italy. Denmark and Norway. Prussia and Hungary--well you get the idea. During her time of observation, the American had come to a sudden realization.
She had never truly been in love.
Sure she had crushes here and there but those didn't mean anything to her. America knew she had family that loved her and for that she was grateful. Though sometimes it was a little hard for her to say 'I love you' back. America really and truly did care for her family which she considered to be England, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Seychelles. Not to mention all the other colonies England and France once had making them her distant relatives.
She also had her current boyfriend, Japan. He was an amazing person and boyfriend kind, protective, caring, responsible, and so many other good traits. Amelia tried to say that she loved him but her own insecurities held her down. Amelia couldn't count the nights she tossed and turned thinking about how Japan may not actually love her. She had always had trouble with relationships because of her...overbearing personality.
Amelia continued to battle her thoughts as she walked out of the world meeting building. Luckily the hotel was right next to the building thanks to so many nations complaining about having to walk too long. 'Didn't they use to walk across Europe on foot?' Amelia thought to herself as she imagined once mighty and feared empires complaining about having to walk too far. It was an amusing picture to say the least.
The American stepped into the hotel slightly happier but that quickly went away when she saw the couples holding hands and staring at each other lovingly. Many stared at her as she walked by them all without so much as a smile. It made the gazes morph into concerned stares. Why was America so sad?
Canada was about to get up from where he was sitting and go after his sister when a hand gripped his arm keeping him in place. Canada turned to see England shaking his head at him before nodding towards Japan who was already going after his girlfriend. "He's got this, lad. Don't worry he'll take care of her." England promised his poison green eyes looking softly at the Canadian. Canada looked at him for a second then looked at the place where Japan once stood. Canada sighed signaling that he wasn't going after his little sister.
Amelia slowly walked towards the hotel gardens smiling when she finally reached her destination. Amelia however, didn't see her Japanese boyfriend following her closely. Japan was worried when his girlfriend didn't greet him with her usual smile and kiss on the cheek when she walked into the hotel. He knew the American suffered from depression and figured she must be feeling sad about something.
America opened the door to the garden breathing in the fresh scent of flowers as she walked inside. Amelia walked around not noticing that she had left the door open. The blonde found a very comfortable patch of grass and decided to lay down. For awhile the blue eyed beauty just layer there resting until her thoughts became too much for her. The blonde opened her eyes (when had she closed them?) and started to sing her thoughts out loud.
"If I could begin to be
Half of what you think of me
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love~"
Japan looked in between the cracks of the door at his girlfriend singing. Japan smiled to himself and thought about how beautiful her voice was. He didn't really pay attention to the meaning behind the lyrics.
"When I see the way you act
Wondering when I'm coming back
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love
Like you"
Amelia got up from the patch of grass only to sit on the bench not even a few feet away from her. A dove was sitting on the arm of the bench staring at her with wide black eyes. Amelia smiled and rubbed the area under its beak her smile brightening just a tad when the dove flew to sit in her lap. Amelia pet the dove while continuing to sing.
"I always thought I might be bad
Now I'm sure that it's true
'Cause I think you're so good
And I'm nothing like you"
Kiku moved inside once he saw his American girlfriend sitting on a bench with a dove perched in her lap. Amelia's smile always made those around her smile but this smile just felt sad and empty. Like the one she'd give everyone after they were done insulting her. Japan seemed to be the only nation who knew that that smile was fake.
"Look at you go
I just adore you
I wish that I knew
What makes you think I'm so special"
Amelia stopped petting the dove and it flew away into a nearby tree where it sat on one of the branches. Amelia looked at the little manmade river in front of her and sighed as the water ran through. What she wouldn't do for a real forest or a real river....Amelia shook her head and continued to sing softly.
"If I could begin to do
Something that does right by you
I would do about anything
I would even learn how to love~"
Kiku nearly slapped himself in the face when he realized what the song was truly about. His girlfriend was too insecure to say she loved him. Japan knew that most of America's exes were human meaning she had to watch them grow old and die. It was the curse of immortality. No matter how much you want to you can never fall for someone who is mortal. It only led to heartbreaker and tragedy and the worst part is Amelia never seemed to learn from it until she and Japan started going out. America continued to sing not noticing her boyfriends now sad expression.
"When I see the way you look
Shaken by how long it took
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love like you"
Amelia felt tears gather in her eyes as she managed to get the last few words out.
"Love like you
Love me, like you~"
Kiku couldn't take it anymore running up behind his lover and hugging her while she sat now frozen on the bench in shock. "I love you Ameria. I arways wirr." Japan said softly shifting his body so he was now sitting on the bench hugging the now sobbing American. He was so caught up in caught up in comforting her that he almost didn't hear her speak.
"I...I love you too, Keeks."
