Three days passed, and the cowboys and field workers stopped working to help make a pyre for Luke and a coffin for Charles. News spread about the events at Blazer's Mill and the Bixby Ranch. The Regulators were on the run, and Emiliano was not arrested since Charles had accepted the Fast Draw challenge and lost.
On the second day, the townspeople watched Emiliano and some cowboys take Charles' coffin. There were mixed emotions; some respected Emiliano for giving a man who tried to kill him a burial, while others felt he should be punished. Charles was dug into his grave and put to rest. Emiliano then put a couple of flowers on his grave. "I'm sorry."
Everyone returned to the ranch, where Gouyen, Isaac, and other workers were waiting for him. Gouyen held the bag of Laureana's ashes as she stood by Luke's body on a wooden pyre. Luke wore a nicely made black suit, pants, tie, and white shirt. His hair was well-combed. Men and women stood around the altar awaiting Emiliano.
Emiliano stood before his Father's dead body, as did Gouyen and Isaac. The young woman cried as she touched Luke's cold hands and then let go. Isaac took off his hat and looked at his long-time friend, who treated him as family despite the color of his skin. Isaac cleared his throat as he felt tears forming in his eyes. "Rest well, my friend. May ya and Laureana finally be happy."
Emiliano as he put his head on his Father's head. He then motioned out his right hand. One of the men stepped forward and gave him a fire torch. Gouyen then began to sing a prayer song known to the Mescalero people. Emiliano then lit the pyre, and flames engulfed Luke's body. Everyone watched as Luke's body began to burn; it seemed like an eternity until the fire started to die. Luke's body was nothing but tiny bones and ash. Emiliano walked forward, gathered Luke's bones and ashes, and put them in the bag with his Mother's ashes. "I'll be right back; I will keep my promise." He asked Isaac to get him a horse, which the older man did. Emiliano rode off.
"Where do you think he is going?" asked Gouyen.
Isaac smiled gently. "The beginnin' of everythin'."
Emiliano went on the path to where he first met Luke and his parents' special place. The young man arrived at the river and cabin that Luke had built. He got off the horse and stood by the river. The memories of him and Luke appeared when Luke showed him techniques to use a gun, the day he was caught, and all the teasing. He then got a hold of his parent's ashes and released them into the river. He watched as their ashes flowed onto the river's waters until they dissipated. Emiliano looked back to the cabin but didn't go inside. Instead, he got on his horse and went back to the ranch.
On the third day, news spread that the war between the Regulators and the Dolan-Murphey faction was ongoing. Madame Belle spread the word about Annmarie's disappearance; no one cared. Madame Belle was forced to accept that Annmarie might have run away. Emiliano, who knew the truth, did not speak out.
Emiliano and Gouyen stayed at the ranch, trying to plan what to do next. Isaac took charge of the workers to continue to work on the land. Emiliano was in a room, lying on the bed. He was reticent and was not motivated to do much within the week. The quiet was interrupted when there was a knock on the door. Isaac entered. "Emiliano, I need to speak to ya. That okay?"
"Yes, what is it?"
"Please follow me."
He nodded and followed Isaac towards Luke's former study. The young man never entered there; it was too painful for him. "Where's Gouyen?"
"She is in town to get some food." The door was closed behind them. The study was empty, quiet, and cold. "Now, I wanna ask what ya plannin' to do now?"
Emiliano shrugged his shoulders. "At first, Gouyen and I wanted to leave this place, but we're still planning where to go."
Isaac nodded as he motioned out some documents to Emiliano. "Now that Luke is gone. Many workers are wonderin' what is gonna happen. If they gonna keep workin' here. Tomorrow a lawyer comin' to talk about the ranch. Luke's will state that these lands be yers."
Emiliano flinched. "What?"
"Luke once told me that if he died, he would sell them, but then ya came, and he changed his will. All these lands belong to ya now." The young man was speechless, and Isaac patted him on the shoulder. "This was always yer home; it belonged to yer Ma, then yer Pa, and now yers. Ya have a home that ya and Gouyen can make a new beginnin'. Also, there are people here that need ya too. I was there for yer Pa, and he was there for me. I can be there for ya too. The lawyer is comin' tomorrow. Think about it." With that, Isaac left the study, leaving Emiliano alone.
Emiliano slowly walked around the study and stopped as he imagined the image of his Father sitting on his chair, writing paperwork, and the image of his Mother standing beside him. They both looked at him and smiled; their image disappeared. The young man sat on the chair by the desk and looked at the documents. Then, he noticed his Father's journal at the right corner of the desk and began to read it. Emiliano read about his Father's childhood, how young he had to work and attend school, and his dreams. More into the pages, he read about how nervous he was when making it to New Mexico and meeting his Mother.
His Father wrote about her talents, her family, and his heartbreak when she left. Emiliano also read about when Father and Son met and spent all their time together. He closed the journal and sat in silence. Emiliano thought about his parents, the Regulators, Annmarie, and the many who were and will be killed for land and profit. Emiliano felt that Billy and the others wouldn't live long, and it was only a matter of time. It made him realize that owning land and power was not guaranteed forever. The war made him see that. The land belonged to his Mother's family for many years, but they lost it to Luke. Luke was killed, and now Luke passed it to him.
Emiliano's body began to tremble as he took out the golden ring necklace. He bit his lower lip, closed his eyes, and put his hands over his face with the necklace.
He cried.
