Blazer's Mill
Emiliano and other members of the Regulators rode out to Blazer's Mill to confront Buckshott Rogers. The men had their guns and bullets to prepare themselves. Their horses galloped through the dirt road. The group rode on until morning finally arrived. Emiliano was nervous about what was going to happen. Richard did say that they only wanted to interrogate him; their expressions said the opposite. According to resources, their target was Blazer's Mill, where Rogers had most of his business.
"I see it! We're almost there!" announced Billy. All the men looked ahead; a mill was seen from afar.
"Onward!" yelled Richard. The men cheered, except Emiliano; he couldn't help that a bloodbath would occur.
Meanwhile, Buckshot Roberts cleaned and packed some things in chests inside his home. He was in his late forties and stood at five feet and five inches tall. His skin was light tan, filled with sweat, scars, and bruises due to his profession. His dark brown hair was curly and filled with dirt. Parts of his pants and shirt were filled with holes, sweat, and dirt. "I gotta get these guns to the next county ahead; they are expectin' 'em. Robert stopped when he heard horses approaching his land. Roberts went to look out his window and saw that the Regulators were heading his way. "Damn it!" He ran to one of the chests, got out his rifle, and filled it with bullets. "These chuckleheads are gonna put me in a bad box! I ain't got nothin' to do with John's killin'!"
The Regulators arrived outside Robert's home. Richard commanded his horse to go forward and noticed Roberts by the window. "Roberts, get out here."
Roberts stood by the window and held his rifle closer to him. "Wha' for!? I ain't do nothin'! If this about Tunstall's killin', I had nothin' to do with it! I told ya, Dolan, Murphey, Chisum, and McSween, that I don't wanna be part of yer war!"
Billy then went forward. "Then come out and prove that ya ain't part of Dolan and Murphey's gang. Ya been doin' business with them!"
"I do business with many people in different counties! I ain't part of no one's group!"
"Then come out! What are ya afraid of!?' yelled Billy.
Roberts held onto his rifle tightly as he felt the situation tense up. He knew that Billy had a temper and didn't hesitate to kill anyone who stood in his way. "I should ask y'all that. I'm one man, and y'all a group."
Emiliano was behind the group, watching the bickering. Even though Roberts was far, he could tell by his voice that he held no hesitation. "He looks to be telling the truth," he told himself. Emiliano commanded his horse to go forward. "Roberts, where were you on the day at Tunstall's murder!?"
Richard and the others eyed him, surprised he would even ask such a question. "What are you-!?"
Emiliano raised his hand. "Where were you!? Since you claim you're innocent and had nothing to do with Tunstall's murder, it wouldn't be hard to tell us where you were!"
Robert stilled as he took a glance from the window. He noticed the young man and felt relief that there was someone reasonable. Yet, there was the possibility of it being a trap. "I was here at home the entire time. I was also doin' business with the Apache Indians. I swear to God Almighty! I don't myself in anyone's riff-raff!
Did any of you see Roberts when John was killed that day?" No one said a thing. "Richard, I know you all want revenge, but how can you or anyone be sure he had a part in it? He's a businessman who wants to be left alone. I feel that he's telling the truth."
Billy rode forward. "Whose side are ya on?"
"I'm for the truth, Billy." He then looked at his boss. "Richard, you promised me that we're here to interrogate him, and we did just that. We shouldn't mess with innocent people; we would be no different than Dolan and Murphey.
Billy felt rage building up from the pit of his stomach. "Don't act like ya don't know what I'm talkin' about! Yer defendin' him!"
He was ignored. "Richard, we don't need more people to die today. If you want revenge, kill Dolan Murphey and their dogs; Robert has no part in it."
Billy was losing his patience and took his gun out. "I had it!" Without any warning, he shot his rifle toward Robert's home.
"No! Don't!" yelled Emiliano.
The bullet missed. However, another bullet was shot from the opposite direction; it didn't come from Roberts or any member of the Regulators. The sound of the bullet shook the horses; the men tried to regain control. Another shot was fired, and a groan was heard within the group. Billy's eyes became wide. "Dick!"
Richard was shot in the chest, was in shock, and couldn't get a hold of his horse's reins and fell. Emiliano was also there in shock until he saw Richard on the ground. The young man got off his horse and went to him, putting his hands over the gunshot wound. Frank also got off his horse and went to his fallen comrade. "Dick! You gotta stay alive! Dick!"
Richard didn't respond. His eyes only moved to Emiliano, Frank, and Billy. Then, more gunshots were fired, scaring the horses. The Regulators noticed a group of men headed their way; they were the Jesse Evans Gang. "G-Go!" said Richard.
"No, we ain't leavin' ya here!" yelled Frank.
"Go!"
Emiliano eyed the Regulators, who got their guns and began firing. He noticed Buckshot Roberts looked confused, not knowing where the gunshots were coming from. The Regulators started shooting toward the upcoming group; some bullets hit Robert's house. Roberts flinched violently and began to shoot the posse. Emiliano went to Frank. "We have to go!" Frank shook his head, but Emiliano got a hold of his shirt. "You heard our leader! He wants us to go! We can't let more of our own die here!"
"The hell we are!" Billy saw the other men from afar and then saw Roberts. Rage filled him; he took out his gun and shot at Roberts. Some bullets hit the older man, but it didn't deter him as he continued to fight. The Jesse Evans Gang was getting closer. Frank looked down at Richard, who nodded to him. Frank didn't want to leave his friend but knew he had to consider the others. "Retreat!"
"Are ya cracked!?" yelled Billy as he was shooting.
Frank got on his horse and went to Billy, grabbing his shirt and pulling him upward. "I say we go, now!" he yelled.
"What about Dick!? We can't leave him here!"
"It's his order that we go! Retreat, everyone!" The surviving men followed their new leader.
Emiliano ran and got to his horse and tried to keep up with them. He glanced behind and saw the enemy was getting closer to him. Emiliano got his gun and began to shoot; he missed. "I forgot my knives!" he thought to himself. One of the opposing men pointed his pistol toward Emiliano and fired. The bullet hit Emiliano's horse's leg. The horse let out a loud groan and fell to the ground. Franky and the others noticed and were about to go to him, but Emiliano shook his head. "Go! Run!" Some hesitated and saw the other gang heading their way but eventually fled.
Emiliano knew that his horse was shot and wouldn't last long. He ran towards the gang, which surprised them. Many fired their weapons, but Emiliano would dodge or run in different paths. They realized the young man was going to Richard, and the gang stopped shooting. Emiliano made it to Richard's side. Richard was struggling to breathe. "Richard."
The elder looked at Emiliano. "Go..." He stopped moving.
Richard was dead.
