Episode 25: To the Fire. The End

POV: Dream

About two days later

I was losing my mind. Every second I spend here, Scarlet's voice rings in my ears. I've failed her, and I continue to stay in the place that killed her.

Not any longer.

"LUNCH!!" The horse voice of the cook screamed. I set down a child's previously washed shirt, and walked in line for lunch.

"Hey Dream, how you holding up?" Kat-lynne asked, as a huge pile of what resembles stuffing sloshed on her plate.

"I, I just, can't believe I'm here," I said, pushing a thick, unwashed lock of hair out of my face, and behind my head.

"I was like that to begin with. I couldn't believe that I could live in a place, that does that to children." She said, scratching the back of her black hair covered head. I felt my stomach flip.

"I, didn't think I could either. I mean, I think, I knew one of the kids." I said, not wanting to get in too deep with her. We sat down on hard logs that were face up, behind dented metal tables. Her metal tray hit the table with a horrendous clang. Her eyes shrunk to a pin's head.

"You did?" She said, quickly sitting down at the table, after realizing that people were staring at her.

"Yeah." I said, a little worried of what she was going say.

"I, I did too. When I got here, they showed me the pile of kid' stuff they had kept, because they wanted to remember them? No! Beurnson explained they kept their most important stuff, so no one can identify them when they're zombies!" My heart pounded in my ears, and contents in my stomach swirled.

I can't even say anything. I shakily reached into my pocket, and pulled out the folded piece of paper that had Scarlet's drawing on it. She grabbed it, unfolded it, and stared.

"She, was your sister?" Her eyes were glossed with tears, as the paper slid across the table to me. My lips drew inward, as I gnawed on their chapped pieces of skin, trying to keep tears from rolling down my cheeks.

"I, my brother. He, I, this is how I got here. I followed the truck, passed out, and woke up here. I only found out my brother was here, until it was too late for me to leave. We have to get you out of here," She shot up from the table. Her tray leaping from the table, and scattering across the ground, to provide a cloak over the grey ground.

I quickly thrusted up from my seat, and followed to where she wanted to go. Her boots hitting the ground, possibly making their last treads. I quickly stomped behind her.

"Beurnson, come in Beurnson, over." She spoke into her Nokia sized walkie Talkie.

"Beurnson here. What is it Kat-lynne? Over." He instantly knew it was her. Relief washed over my body. I was going to get all of us out!

"We have a problem. A huge problem. Meet Dream and I in the mess hall in five minuets. Over."

"I'm on my way. Over and out," His static laced voice was fuled with fear. Our feet pounded towards a new tomorrow.

POV: Sean

"Beurnson. There, are kids dying! There is a major radiation leak in there! We have to plug it up!" I said, hands on my stomach, trying to keep anything from falling out.

"Very good, Doctor. Brilliant observation." He said. I couldn't tell if he was being serious, or painfully sarcastic.

"Well, let me help! Do you have any lead sheets?" I asked, trying to stand on my wobbling feet.

"Now, why would I do that? With no sick children, there is no medicine flow from the agency. They give us some pretty strong pain meds. And quite a lot of money! I will be damned if you were to tamper with that doctor." He said, then proceeded to walk as far from me as possible, as I was dragged into the infirmary to work on anything.

POV: Dream

"Now, Kat-lynne says we have a problem here?" Beurnson asked, with his hands behind his back. She nodded.

"One of her sisters was one of the children that were distractions. She knows everything." Kat-lynne's voice went from understanding, to ready to rip my fucking head off.

Beurnson's head lowered. He seemed almost, disappointed?

"You know, it's a shame Dream. I really thought you would have been a great part of this place," Beurnson reached to his belt. I didn't see the gun until it was too late. As he drew it, I felt my stomach flip. My life flashed in front of my eyes. I decided it was too shitty to be ended like this. I grabbed Kat-lynne's long dark hair, and pushed her in front of the bullet. As her limp body fell into my arms, I shoved her corpse onto Beurnson.

My feet pounded as if the ground was hot. I screamed, as I put everything I was into running. I don't know how quickly Beurnson got to his feet, but I knew that there is a chance for Sean and I to get the hell out of here. I remember Kat-lynne talking about a radiation room. Maybe Sean is in there?

I turned a sharp corner, ducked under a fallen beam, and grabbed the wall as I flew. I reached the radiation room. Sean was there. He had a match lit against it.

"Jack! JaCK! WE NEED TO GO!" I screamed. I knew that there was only one person following me, but that's all I needed.

"What did you do?" He screamed, and started running with me.

"I killed Kat-lynne. That was her plan all along. I shoved her onto Beurnson, because he was trying to kill me. We need to fucking explode this place," I screamed, as we turned together across a corner.

"Already being done! I wasn't going to light the match until I had you, but now, this place is going to blow any fucking second," Sean said, as we twisted and turned our way out of here. The light of the grey ground, and pale sky has never been more releaving. He threw me out, and jumped on top of me, as the entire sanctuary exploded.

Shrapnel, body parts, and supplies littered the sky as the fire bit at anything it could get its teeth around. He stayed on top of me, until all the noise stopped. We both looked up, and breathed. It was over. We were out of hell. We quickly realized that the zombies were more than attracted to the loud bang, we got out of there as quickly as we could.

A day later. Back in the train car.

Sean and I were hunched over a small fire, that a honey infused rabbit was cooking over. We had been pretty quiet while we were running home. But now that we know that we are safe for a while, we relaxed.

"Dream, I, you saved my life." He said. His blue eyes were glossy. His lips trembling.

"Sean, with out you, Beurnson would have killed me." I said, as I tore a part a small chunk of steaming rabbit.

"I, From the moment we met, I knew you were going to be something special. You are probably the best thing that has happened to me ever since Gracey." He said, with a slight chuckle. My cheeks burned red.

"Wow, thank you. That, really means a lot to me," I said, truly accepting the compliment. He smiled with out looking at me as a response.

"You know, You're the reason I'm not afraid to feel anymore," He said, staring right into my eyes with those sapphire knives.

"You're the reason I can still feel." I chuckle.

"Dream?" He asked with a sweet smile.

"Hmm?" I asked with out raising my head.

"I love you."

"I love you more."

"I love you moistest."
