Episode 13: Bad To Worse. Part One

POV Dream

Who does that ass hole think he is?! Saying how I don't care about my own sister? Where does he get off! This is so fucked. I don't want to be here any longer. The one reason I wanted to stay, JUST DIED, and I got fucking blamed for it. I know I can't leave under my conditions, nor will I try again, so I'll suck it up, and wait until I'm healed. How long do you think it takes for a leg to heal anyway? Too long. I can't do this anymore. I'm supposed to go on a scavenge tomorrow, and now that I can't handle everything. I can barely walk, let alone travel across the god forsaken country.

As I buried my head into my arms, there were three shakes on my tent's support. I groaned as I rolled over. I pressed my ear tightly against the tent's wall, to hear the breathing. If it was Sean, I'm not answering. His breathing is short, and quiet, to protect anything from hearing him. As I listened, the breaths were slow, and low. Taking in all the oxygen that they required. This wasn't Sean.

I zipped open the tent, and looked out to see Darla. Her eyes were as red as her hair from the tears. I'm not asking her about anything.

"Hey honey, I'm making everyone some breakfast, and I was wondering what you wanted," Darla's sweet country drawl was making things a little better.

"I, I don't need anything," I gently refused.

"Oh honey, it's going to be a long day for everyone. You'll need some breakfast. What would you like?" She asked, with a smile. I knew I couldn't refuse anymore.

"Well, um, what are you making?" I asked, looking out the door.

"I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking your opinion!" She laughed.

"Wait, you're asking MY opinion? Why?" I asked, knowing that I shouldn't mean so much to these people.

"Sorry to be rude, but are you kidding me? Haha!" She said, recalling yesterday. I nodded.

"Um, I don't really know. How about I help you?" I asked.

"That would be lovely! Thank you Dream!" She smiled, holding out her hand to help me stand up.

"Thank you Darla. I actually have an idea of what we can make." I said, remembering that honey infused rabbit that Scar and I shared a while ago.

"Really? That would be great!" She smiled.

"Alright, what weapons do you guys have, that resembles a spear?" I asked. I saw that confusion blanket over her eyes, and confuse her genuinely, but she complied, and went into an old, make shift door/shed that they made, rummaged around for a few seconds, and pulled out a large bow, and a few arrows.

"Which hand are you?" She asked.

"Left," She quickly picked up the bow, and handed it to me, and stepped back, to see what I was going to do. I looked around camp. Most of the camp ground was just dirt, but there was a large patch of grass around the corner in the front defense, that lead outside. Perfect for rabbits, and other small animals to come through.

"Was this on purpose?" I asked, with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah, it's to keep in small animals." She said, pointing to the jungle like grass.

"Do rabbits ever come through there?" I asked, looking down.

"Of course," She smiled. We looked deeper into the grass. It was moving. We were both filled with excitement as the grass bowed out of the way as an animals was burrowing through it.

Deeper into it, we saw a rabbit. It was the fattest damn animal that you would ever see.

"Oh my," Darla said, quietly. My mouth was watering from the clear aroma of everything. I drew back the bow, and pointed it down to the unsuspecting rabbit, and let the bow fly.

"Holy shit, you're a good shot." Darla said, after I retrieved the arrow with a rabbit wrapped around it.

"Thank you! My, my mom taught me." I smiled, as she helped me hobble back to camp.

"So, please tell me you know how to clean one of those things?" She asked me.

"Of course. But we need more. There are three big guys in there like need meat, and frankly, rabbits don't have a whole lot on them. I'll get about three more, and then I'll cook for us.

------------------------------------------------------------

"Alright, are you read to learn how to cook a rabbit, the Laken way?" I smiled, hobbling to my back pack, and pulling out a mason jar of honey.

"What's that for?" She asked, looking at my mysterious jar.

"It's for the meat! We're having honey infused rabbit!" I smiled, taking my skinned, and cleaned rabbits, onto the cooking station.

"Oh my goodness, that just sounds heavenly! How do you do it?" She smiled.

"I'll show you! Okay, so this method of cooking is unconventional, but believe me, it makes everything taste so much better. So, we take a forked prong doused in honey, and then we shove it through the rabbit, and make it a slow turner. Once the outside skin is charred, we know that the meat on the inside is done." I said, doing what I was saying, as I said it.

"How high does the fire have to be?" She asked, looking to add more, and take more logs in.

"Just so it touches the meat," I smiled, getting ready for the preparation of everything.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ben?"

"Here sir,"

"Yuki?"

"Present"

"Darla?"

"Here,"

"Carlos? Back in the tent, Dream?"

"Here sir." We all responded to Sean's roll call in the morning.

"Alright, thank you all for being here so promptly, and orderly. Today is going to be a long, ass, day, so we need to get started right away. Yuki will take Darla, and search for medicine at the nearby, and the further gas station. Take everything you need. Ben will look for food, water, and near by loners that we can rob. Carlos will protect base. Dream, you go north, by the big lake, and shoot large animals. Take what you think you might need, but please don't be wasteful. Then i'll go around to raider camps, and get everything I can possibly scrounge up.

Now, Dream and Darla have made us a wonderful breakfast, so eat everything and then we'll head off," Sean said, looking at his clip board, then set it down on the table that Ben fixed a while ago.

"Sean?" Yuki asked. She was away from the group, and looking to our main entrance.

"Yes Yuki?"

"There's. there's someone at the wall,"
