[5] They/Them Au

T.W. Homophobia and Anxiety.

Virgil sighed as they twiddled their thumbs, looking over to their parents. They knew it was a huge risk coming out to them since they were so close-minded, but they couldn't keep having them misgender them. It was driving them insane, and they just wanted to be referred to by the correct pronouns.

They were sitting on one side of the table, trying to keep their breathing even, whilst their parents sat the other side, clearly not taking the news very well. They didn't know what to do, Virgil or their parents. Maybe they should have kept it to themself, maybe their parents didn't care, and they were better off with one of their boyfriends.

"Get out." Their mother spoke up. "Now."

They were up and out of the front door, barely stopping to pick up their backpack before they were running to their boyfriend's house. They didn't know who they were going to, but it would be whoever was closest.

They knocked rapidly on the front door, hoping he'd answer, needing him to. They shifted their weight from one foot to the other and back again, trying to alleviate some of the anxiety they felt over the whole thing.

They knew their boyfriends were there for them when they needed them, but they didn't know if any of them were willing to take them in on such short notice.

"Virgil?" Roman's mother's voice bought them from their downward spiral of thoughts.

"Is Roman here? Please? I need him."

"He just went out, dear, do you want to come in?"

"No. No. Who did he go out with?"

"Just Patton, to my knowledge."

"Okay." They nodded and ran off, hoping to be able to get to Logan's and have him help.

The streets passed by in a blur, and they couldn't recount where they went if they tried, all they knew was that they needed to get to someone's house, needing the reassurance and help.

They stood outside Logan's house, hearing laughter come from inside. Maybe they should just go, make sure they didn't ruin anyone else's life.

Before they could second guess anything, they knocked, knowing they needed the help. Much like at Roman's they shifted their weight between their feet, hoping beyond anything that Logan would answer, and it wouldn't be one of his family members.

"Virgil?" Logan frowned, taking in his datemate's dishevelled appearance. "What happened?"

"Lo..." They managed out, their knees buckling beneath them.

Logan shot out and caught them, lowering them to the steps, frowning. Virgil never got this worked up, not over anything other than... Their coming out.

"Virgil, did you come out to your parents?"

They nodded, looking down at their hands. They knew their boyfriends were going to be there for him, and they were going to help him through it. For the very reason that they knew their parents wouldn't accept them.

"But we said..."

"I know what you said." They snapped, their anxiety getting the better of them. They gripped their backpack strap, trying to distract them from the cold claws of anxiety, but nothing helped.

Logan reached out and managed to pry one of their hands away, so they could grip his hand if need be.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I wasn't there, I'm sorry you felt as though you had to do it, and that it was an impulsive thing. I'm sorry you are going through this." Logan sighed sadly, he didn't want anyone he loved to be punished for who they were, but some people were just too ignorant.

"They kicked me out." They whispered, tears pricking at the corners of their eyes. "I have nowhere."

"Falsehood." Logan mumbled, glancing back to the open door. "You have here, you have Patton's house, and you have Roman's house."

"I think I'll end up at Roman's..."

"Why? If you don't mind me asking."

"It's just him and his mother, less crowded than here or with Patton. I'd love to stay here, but there are too many people to breathe. Don't know how you do it." They leaned their head on Logan's shoulder and sighed.

"I still love you, and I'm so proud of you for telling them, even if they're idiots." Logan laced their fingers together. "They lost one of the best people in the world."

Telling Logan that their parents didn't care was on the tip of their tongue, but it fizzled out when they saw Roman and Patton walking down the street.

They pulled their hand from Logan's, dropped their backpack, and ran over to Patton, throwing themselves into his arms. As soon as Patton's arms wrapped around their waist, they broke down crying, all of it getting to be too much.

"Woah, V." Roman breathed out, having been taken by surprise at their significant other. "Are you okay, my love?"

"Does it look like they're okay?" Logan stood next to Roman, rolling his eyes at his boyfriend's pure stupidity.

"Well, no, but it never hurts to ask."

"They came out." Logan finally said, answering the question the other two were silently asking. "Their parents kicked them out."

"Where are you going to stay?" Patton murmured.

Virgil reached a hand out to Roman and took it, silently asking if they could stay with him.

"I think that's them asking me?" Roman smiled fondly.

"They think that due to household capacity, your house would be the best suited to their needs."

"Of course you can stay with me." Roma squeezed their hand softly.

The move was rocky, and it took them a while to settle in, but soon enough, Virgil was happier. They had their boyfriend's, a caring parental figure, or five, in their life, and they felt as though things couldn't get much better.
