Forty Six

Jungkook made his way into the tall building. The walk to the reception was hard enough as it with all the pressure he was feeling in that moment, but the crowded lobby helped distract him from his worries for even a mere second. He maneuvered his way around the fast walking bodies avoiding head on collisions with stacks of files and hot cups of coffee.

Jungkook sighed as he adjusted the backpack strap that rolled onto his forearm. His uniform was still spotless but it was a giveaway. He was supposed to be in school, but decided to come here instead.

He slowly made his way towards the big round reception area. Towards the side sat a woman, nearly dressed. She didn't notice his presence at first because she was typing away on the keyboard of the computer while talking to a client on her ear piece. The woman moved about on her wheeled chair grabbing files and such before placing them in front of her.

Jungkook patiently tapped on the counter waiting for her to finish up the call. He wasn't usually this patient but he was too scared to confront his past so he happily accepted the delay.

The woman stopped talking momentarily as she caught a glimpse of Jungkook's figure from the corner of her. She smiled before turning to her side to grab a transparent garner bag, in it a dark blue suit .

"I apologise for keeping you waiting, sir. Your father is in his office as usual." She placed the bag on the counter in front of Jungkook. "Please take this up to him on your way u-" Jungkook interrupted her.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think I am who you think I am." He laughed awkwardly when she turned to face him looking over him properly. She clasped her hand over her mouth when she realised the mistake she had made.

"My mistake! I didn't take a good look at you. You just looked so much like him-" She laughed while shaking her head as a mean of gaining her composure. It had been such a silly mistake to make. "Anyway, do you have a scheduled appointment?"

Jungkook rubbed his nape awkwardly. He did not think things through at all instead he had done things on a whim. "Umm..not really." He stared at his feet thinking he had just wasted this woman's time. "I just showed up unannounced, didn't I? I guess I'll just get going then-"

She smiled when he went on a little rant mumbling words to himself but still audible enough for her to hear. He reminded her of Jongho.

"You're here to see the CEO, Mr Jeon, right?" He turned to looked at her and nodded.

"Have a seat over there." She pointed over to the lounge before turning back to the computer and continued typing away. "I'll see what I can do for you."

His eyes lit up in excitement. Jungkook bowed multiple times to the receptionist to show his gratitude. "Thank you!"

She smiled at him as he made his way over to the lounge.

You glanced at your watch before turning to look around for your boyfriend. The both of you always went to school together whether it be by bus or walking so you knew that he was going to show any minute now. The bus pulled up from the corner and halted in front of the bus stop. You turned to look at the people that scrambled to get on the big piece of metal.You bit your lip in worry, this was third one that passed by. If you didn't board this bus you would surely miss the first period.

You sighed as you moved closer waiting for your turn to board. 'He isn't going to show up, is he? But why didn't he tell me? Is he sick again?' You thought as you slid your boarding pass against the scanner before moving to the back to grab a seat.

The receptionist stayed true to her word and tried to create a spot for the young boy to go up and see Mr Jeon, but it wasn't easy. With all the meetings and work he had for the day it was close to impossible. Five minutes was all she could manage.

Why did he look so much like Jongho and Hyebin? If he kept his mouth shut she would've been fooled for sure. He looked like the missing piece of the family and that's when she knew. Mrs Jeon, his wife was one of her best friends and had been for more than a decade. She couldn't forget the day when they had to give up their only two sons because they were struggling financially, back when the company was small and unknown.

A year later the company picked up contracts and tons of investors, they now had the money to support themselves and their children. They could only bring home one of them, they were devastated. The Jeon couple tried so desperately to find their baby and when she finally did, well she never told anyone what happened but it shattered her.

"Mr Jeon, there's someone here for you." She spoke in to the ear piece briefly as she continued typing away at her keyboard. She could hear the sound of papers rustling from the other end.

"I don't have any outside appointments today. Who could it possibly be?" Mr Jeon asked wondering who would show up unannounced at the office.

"Jeon Jungkook." She said simply, remembering the name he told her earlier. She felt the man tense on the other end causing her to stop what she was doing.

"Jeon...Jungkook?" She turned to look at the boy seated in the lounge only a few feet away. A few employees hurriedly brought him snacks from time to time but he stood up and bowed politely declining them each time.

"Yes, sir! He's been down in the lobby for the past two hours. I promised him a meeting with you, a five minute gap in between your lunch break. Is that okay, sir?" The other end was quiet for a while. She checked whether he was still on the line, and he was.

"...It's not okay." She frowned visibly. Did he not want to meet him- "Send him up now." She sighed in relief as all her worries were lifted away.

"But your 10 o'clock just arrived." She said taking a glance at the main entrance doors. A group of men wearing suits made their way to the reception area. Mr Jeon groaned.

"As soon as the meeting is over, send him up." She couldn't get a few more words as he had already hung up.

The previous night was hard for everyone. If Jungkook hadn't been ignoring Yoongi before, he sure was now. After Jungkook ran off to his room, him and his father remained seated in silence for close to half an hour. Did Jungkook now hate him? He sure hoped not.

Jaesun abruptly stood up beforw heading upstairs. The distress on his face was eminent, but it was a huge weight lifted off his shoulders. Yoongi's eyes followed Jaesun's figure as he walked off. The breath he didn't know he had been holding was let out in a single breath. He covered his face in frustration before getting up as well.

As Yoongi made his way up to his room he crossed paths with his father. He hauled a large box in his hands checking to see if everything was present. Yoongi had his hand on his bedroom door knob but sneakily continued as Jaesun knocked on his younger brother's door before letting himself in.

He sighed before entering his own room and closing the door behind him. He tossed and turned all night thinking off the possibilities the box contained. If they were from his past then Jungkook would do something without thinking it through.

So the next morning he followed Jungkook. That meant he couldn't go to college at his usual time, he informed his professor that he would attend night classes until further notice. He wanted to take care of his brother because he cared so much for him, and he'd wished he had shown him that sooner.

The car was parked right across the street from the building and that is where he waited for the past three hours. He ruffled his hair before looking at the perfectly packed lunchbox on the passenger seat. Yoongi woke up really early to prepare this meal and he wasn't sure whether Jungkook would like it. Soon enough he fell asleep, the exhaustion overpowering him.

The cafeteria was lively as usual during lunchtime. Eunha and Lisa had already secured a spot towards the back of the room. You quite liked that table. It was the most private of all the tables and right now you just wanted a place to hide away.

Up till now Jungkook was not in school and you were getting worried. You sent him a text when you got to class but he hasn't responded to it yet.

You held your tray of food tightly as you made your way across the cafeteria and immediately dug in as soon as you took a seat. Lisa looked at you in astonishment.

"I never thought you'd be the one to eat that fast." She grabbed her sandwich and took a bite out of it.

"I'm just really hungry right now. I completely forgot to eat breakfast." You smiled awkwardly as you scooped up some rice with your spoon.

"That determined to get to school, huh?" Eunha chuckled taking a sip of her water.

"Not as determined as you. Who leaves the house at six am to get to school?" You sighed wondering how she managed to leave the house at such an unusual time. That was the reason why you didn't walk to school with her in the morning.

"Hey, I needed to get some studying done. Exams are coming up and I haven't revised anything because I've been so focused on basketball." Eunha swept a piece of hair away from her face obviously frustrated about her sudden drop in grades.

You patted her back to comfort her. Lisa hummed when she remembered what she had been meaning to ask you the whole day.

"Speaking of basketball, did you do the thing you said you were going to do?" She asked. You smiled brightly as you leaned back in your seat feeling like a huge weight had been lifted off your shoulders.

"Yep. I talked to the coach as soon as I stepped foot in the school. She wasn't at all sad that she had to let me go, but I'm not complaining either." You paused thinking about all the things you had been through because of the sport. "I've had enough basketball for one lifetime."

"It's a shame, and you were playing so well." Eunha said covering up a smile. You laughed sarcastically at her remark.

"I doubt it. I'll try joining another club that doesn't involve playing sports for now." The three of you sat on silence for a while as you indulged in the food in front of you.

"Ah, Y/N, where's Jungkook? I haven't seen him around at all today." Lisa tucked a piece of hair behind her ear before taking another bite of her sandwich. Eunha's eyebrows furrowed.

"Now that you mention it, Taeyong was looking for him earlier too." They both turned to you.

"I don't know either. He hasn't replied to my messages, but I'll try again later." You smiled sadly for a second, not until you replaced with a bright smile not to worry your friends.

"Thank you so much for listening to our business proposal Mr Jeon." Mr Jeon said as he shook Mr Kwan's hand. The meeting had adjourned after an hour of intense discussion between the two CEO's companies.

"It was my pleasure, Mr Kwan. It might take a while to receive a response since we still have more proposals to go through." He nodded understandably thrilled at the fact that he was even given a chance to talk before him.

"That's completely understandable. We look forward to your call then." Mr Kwan seemed really confident in himself. The presentation went according to plan and Mr Jeon didn't hide the fact that he was impressed, so he knew his company would be considered.

The group of men bowed politely as they each walked out of the meeting room and out of the building. Mr Jeon took a seat as soon as the the last man walked out of the room, grabbed an unopened bottle of water and drank it until there was not a drop left.

He pondered for a moment. The business proposal was great, and collaborating with Mr Kwan seemed more than right, but he would have to wait to make his final decision.

He ran a hand through his hair before leaving to to his office. Now that he had gotten the meeting out of the way he could tell the receptionist to send Jungkook up. Mr Jeon smiled bitterly.

Jeon Jungkook..He hadn't heard that name in years and was hoping it was who he thought he was. His son, Jeon Jungkook.

~~~
"Yes, sir! I'll send him up right away." The receptionist spoke happily in to her head set before Mr Jeon hung up. He turned to the boy sitting anxiously on the couch before walking over to him.
Jungkook noticed her and quickly stood up ready to hear what she had to say.
"Sorry for the long wait, Mr Jeon." He shook his head and told her that it was okay. He was a busy man after all.  "Mr Jeon is requesting you on the top floor. Would you like an escort?" She asked.
Jungkook gulped. This was it. The moment he had been waiting for all morning and he just couldn't believe it. His heart thumped quickly and loudly he was scared. What was he scared of? He didn't quite know that himself.
No...no...I can't do this.. He told himself before grabbing his backpack and made his way to the main entrance of the building. She called out to him but to no avail, he had run off.
~~~

"Come on, Jungkook. Answer your stupid phone.." You mumbled. The phone was pressed against your ear for the third time now and you were getting worried. What if something had happened to him? What if-

"No he's okay, he has to be." You sighed when the call went unanswered yet again. The bus pulled up by the side of the road and you boarded. Jungkook was home, he had to be but he wasn't according to his brother, Yoongi. He knew where his younger brother had been but chose not to say anything. And that's how events played out for the rest of the week. Jungkook didn't come to school. Yoongi followed him to Jeon Enterprises with his prepared lunches to return back home with them completely untouched. And now you and your friends were worried sick about him.

Jungkook on the other hand went to the company, still so afraid of meeting the man whom had now come to know as his father. He settled himself by the lounge and that was where he spent his days. The receptionist always insisted to set another appointment for him but he politely declined each time. For now being there was more than enough.

The week went by so fast and now it was Friday. It had now officially been a week since you spoke to Jungkook and being worried was an understatement.

You stared at the unopened texts on you screen before turning it off and stuffing in into your jacket pocket. Your hands gripped tightly on to the straps of your backpack. Taking one final look at the school, at your school mates making their way through the main gates you turned away, and walked mindlessly through the streets of Seoul.

Being alone with your thoughts was all you needed right now. You and your mother have talked everyday since that weekend, expressing all your thoughts and emotions. At first she felt down about the whole ordeal but she had slowly come to terms with it.

You kicked a small stone across the pavement as way to release your pent up stress. Why did your life have to be so difficult?

After hours of walking mindlessly you found yourself in the park. Of course you don't know where you are or even how to get home but that was a question for later. But right now you were tired and desperate to cool down in the shade and thankfully there was a bench right by the entrance to the park.

You groaned in relief as you sat down.

"I hope mom doesn't find out that I didn't go to school today." You mumbled as you took out your phone and typed out a short text to send to Lisa and Eunha explaining why you didn't show up to school just so they wouldn't get worried.

Not even a second later, Lisa replied with two heart emojis and a don't worry, we'll eat your favourite dish at lunch for you so you don't have to worry text. You smiled before admiring the landscape around you.

You hummed when you noticed a building right across the road.

"Why didn't I notice that before..." You trailed off when you saw the person you had been trying to get hold of for a while now. You whispered his name under your breath asking yourself if it really was him that walked in to the building. You even blinked multiple times to make sure that it wasn't all in your head.

"Jungkook." You said completely convinced that it was him before grabbing hold of your backpack beside you and quickly made your way to the building.

~~~
"How long is he going to keep avoiding me?" Mr Jeon groaned as he watched Jungkook enter the building from the security room. This was where he spent his mornings now since the receptionist told him that he had left the building in a hurry that day.
Saying he was hurt was an understatement. He was devastated. It had been a while, a really long while since he had seen his son and he want going to wait anymore.
"You know what...I'll go down instead this time." His assistant, Mrs Jeon exclaimed when her husband left the room. She could still remember the day when he told her the news. She was a teary mess. The possibility of them finding their son was very slim and she knew that but it there was a possibility that he was hers then she would take it. It was a false sense of hope but it was better than nothing her.
Mrs Jeon had also joined her husband in the mornings and she thought a lot about going down to see him and just throw her arms around him engulfing him in a hug, but she didn't want to scare him off. He had to come up on his own when he was ready. Knowing he was there was more than enough to give her a sense of comfort. They finally found him.
"Wait-" She shouted as she ran after her husband to the elevator.
