Chapter 2
"REMEMBER, VAHL, YOU are a delicate feminine flower who has been invited to the ball, because you are donating a large sum of money to this charity." Vaughn said for the umpteenth time as he parked in front of the curb.
Vahl rolled her eyes, tempted to play stabscotch with her brother's hand and stab him on purpose. "Yes, yes, now is there anything else I need to know, or are you going to keep reminding me how much of a feminine flower I'm not?"
Vaugn sighed, lifting his glasses and wiped at his eyes in exhaustion. "You know, sometimes I feel like I'm the eldest and you're the grumpy teenager who simply can't keep her tongue." He opened her door and sent her on her way.
She fumbled with the heavy crystal earring that hung from her earlobe and waved her hand. "Just keep me posted on anything or anyone who might be a potential threat to the mission."
Vaughn watched his sister strut away and leaned against the matte black car he so dearly loved, shoving his hands into the pockets of his dress pants. He shook his head, frowning at her in sadness. Because that's what life was to her: one big mission.
The Ballroom of The Great Hall was decorated in white ribbons and golden pieces with white orchids and roses. It was calming to see the color scheme they'd chosen for the event that celebrated the slaughtering of hundreds of innocents. It made Vahl itch in her tight corsetted black dress with studs along the off-the-shoulder neckline and silk gloves.
But then she reminded herself that no one, not even a child was innocent. And she took another sip of wine.
"And for the end of the evening, we have saved the best, ladies and gentlemen." The man on the podium said. He stood behind a table that held a case. "The mask." He clicked the case open, revealing the object.
"This is from centuries ago. It is dusted with silver powder around the eyes and has a green apatite embedded into it. As you may know, that particular gemstone is very rare these days. This of course spikes up the price." He explained. "Bidding starts at five hundred thousand goldpieces."
Immediatly the room erupted in murmers and people shouting their offers.
"Five hundred and fifty thousand!"
"Six hundred thousand. "
"Seven hundred thousand."
"Seven hundred and fifty!" Vahl shouted, joining the mix. She knew they hadn't come here to buy the items, but it did good not to keep so still. She had come to an auction after all. Her blue eyes locked with blue ones on the other side of the room. They belonged to a boy with shimmering black hair and a sharp angled face.
"Eight hundred." He spoke up, topping her offer. Amusement danced in his eyes as he kept her gaze. A slight smirk settled on his lips.
"Nine!" Vahl put in, staring at the boy challengingly. Her eyes had narrowed and were nearly slits.
In the end, the mask ended up being sold to a smug looking broad shouldered man for 1.2 million gold pieces. Vahl had rolled her eyes in annoyance at the ordeal.
