Chemical Change
I'm a piece of paper
You're a lit match
Burning in my favorite shade of blue.
And I'm dying to be touched by you.
All the while knowing,
Whatever happens from here,
I can never go back.
You will change me into someone chemically different.
But here I am:
Melting beneath your fingers.
It's a slow burn at first,
Electrifying,
So much as to you don't acknowledge its existence at first,
But as it consumes your every thought,
And eventually
You can't pretend it isn't there.
I'm crumbling at the edges
Under the weight of the world,
Under the weight of you.
I'm folding and collapsing over into myself,
As little blackened bits of me scatter to the floor,
Utterly useless to you
Because nothing burns the same twice.
I can't burn the same twice.
You scatter my ashes around,
Every place you go;
So that when you leave
And I revisit them,
I will find it impossible to breathe.
~When I become only soot and ashes below your feet, will you kneel to the ground so you can kiss me?
