Chapter Fifty-Four
* * *
Sage had awoken in a panic, and it was one where her entire body felt still and hardly responsive to her commands, even when she willed her arms to push forward.
The image was clear in her mind, and so was her mission.
Slipping out of bed and taking a pair of clothes from the closet, she found her way out of the bedroom to get dressed elsewhere. Her heart was racing faster than her mind could process, and so when she opened the house door—She was met with an unimpressed-looking Charge, his arms crossed over his chest and a frown embedded deeply in his expression.
"Evening Luna." He curtly pushed, and she huffed.
"I have to go."
"Alpha said no more night runs hun, you know that. Pup's not ready to come out yet, he needs to stay in there a lil longer." On any other night she would've pointed out the fact that even Blake thought the pup was a male, but the fact that she didn't, caught him off guard.
Something was wrong, and he caught wind of it when she looked up at the moon. The cloudy yet full moon dominating the sky.
She remembered kindly to Luke's words, that this would be the strongest any of their kind would be, she just hoped she'd make it in time.
"You drive." She ordered, and Blake instantly picked up the pace to follow her. "Uh, the dinner closed a few hours ago hun."
"Not dinner, highway."
"Excuse me?!" Sage didn't have time to waste, so she stopped her attempt into getting in the car and caught his cheek in her hand.
Close to instantly did the imagines roll through her head to his, that is what caused him to wake up in the same panic as Sage. He felt her premonition to the point of causing him to choke and fall to his knees.
"You drive."
"Sage, we—We can't take on a whole truckload of—" She glared at him in anger and slammed the door shut behind her, ultimately getting Blake to take the driver's seat to speak with her further.
"Sage, we need evidence—We need an army to take on people from the Underground. It's—"
"Then we call Birdie." She claimed, and before Blake had any second word to talk her out of it, she dialed the bird.
"Little wolf, always at the oddest of times..."
"I have dream about trucks moving—"
"Prisoners, they were prisoners, hun. They were in like a cryostasis, Mrs.Warren, Sage showed me the dream. It looks like they're moving them to another facility." With Blake's explanation of the dream, the witch went silent for a few moments before letting out a hum.
"Did the dream give any indication as to where it would be driving to?" Sage hardly knew how to drive a car let alone know the signs or symbols that lingered the road for the driver, but Blake answered right then and there.
"They were getting off exit eight, they're heading west...It makes sense, most of their facilities are that way." Aurelia found herself in a bit of a debate, but this was another lead. And even if there was one witch, it would give a clue as to where their missing coven members were being taken.
"Alright, you have my blessings, little Luna. I'll be sending a few witches, call me directly if you have any more information." Blake mentioned that it was a rather large truck, two containers. And at this time of night, with the number of trucks doing their nightly travels, it would be difficult—Though the witches had an element of magic on their side.
When the call ended, Sage looked expectedly to Blake as she wanted to go and meet them. It was clearly written all over her face as she nicked her head to go.
"Sage, I cannot take you off pack property to deliver you straight back to those scientists. Are you fucking insane?!"
"I want to help!"
"Then help by waking up your mate!" It was rather pathetic of them both to think Remus wasn't awake to begin with. Though he had hoped Sage hadn't left the house and he was glad that she was only in the car, though it looked strange.
And the yelling between both her and Blake set him to knock on the window, which Sage rolled down.
"Remmy—"
"What are you doing, Mate." Her eyes widened as she realized that Remus was pissed, surely it didn't look that bad?
Though she wasn't meant to leave the house without his knowledge, nor while he was asleep.
Especially pregnant.
"Sir—"
"Sage can speak up for herself. Can't you, Munchkin?" Yes, it was safe to assume he was angry and grumpy seeing the way his nose twitched, he was trying to work out the logistics of what Sage could possibly be doing dressed and in the car with Blake.
"I have dream...I—"
"Yes?" She let out half a growl and huff at being interrupted, as her thoughts were already scattered enough as is.
"Scientists moving in truck...They're close." Remus took in her words before looking to Blake for an explanation, and he did just that.
"Sage...You need evidence, I can't just wake up pack Warriors or Enforcers to go on a goose chase over a dream." Blake bit his fist as that hadn't been the best course of action to be said in their regard, the blatant disregard for what she was feeling rose up once again.
"Not a dream!"
"A premonition, an itch...Sage, you're stressing about the wrong things. You need to be in bed and taking care of yourself. What were you planning to do? Go and fight scientists?" She realized that was what Blake was trying to get at, while Blake is a good fighter—He wasn't that good.
"I call witches too."
"So you were going to go?... Do—Sage, what the fuck?!" Blake cowered away as he slipped out of the car and started to walk the small distance away, but then dry-heaved at the idea of how packed the prisoners were in the trucks, like sardines.
"Birdie listens to me."
"I listen to you, Sage. But you're not listening to me. You have a responsibility to this pack, to me, to our pup. What was going off pack lands going to do? Other than put you in danger?"
"You don't listen to me! That's why I called birdie!"
"I don't give a damn who you called, you were going to leave pack grounds. It's like you're asking to get taken again! Do you even hear yourself?!" Blake knew he should've intervened, that the bubbling anger in Sage was getting far too competitive with her wolf that it was surely not good for the pup growing inside her.
"YOU'RE NOT LISTENING! I COULD'VE BEEN ON THAT TRUCK, I WAS ON THAT TRUCK! THERES WOLVES IN THERE, YOU TELL ME YOU WANT TO HELP AGAINST UNDERGROUND. YOU WON'T! JUST LIKE THE COUNCIL, THEY DO NOTHING! ONLY HAYES AND HARLOW!" At the mention of her brother and father, Remus opened the car door and stepped aside.
"Get out of the car, Sage." He said through gritted teeth, but she sat perfectly still.
"Now." She knew his wolf wouldn't hurt her, but the tight grip on her wrist had caught her instantly to settle the dispute.
"No touch me, mate." It had been her wolf now, her cutting growl caused Remus to huff in a slight apology—Though it was more that he had to than anything else.
"Sage...We have to think about the pack. If I send people out and we lose—"
"Witches are helping, helping wolves more than we're helping wolves. Doesn't make sense." No, it didn't, and Remus knew it wasn't fair at all.
So he pinched the brink of his nose, he's never had to call a midnight exhibition on short notice, but then again...His wolves were trained and never used, perhaps now was as good time as any.
Eli, Jack, Shawn...Ready fifteen wolves each, rescue mission.
"Anything else to add, Luna?" Remus said, but it had clearly been a taunt. And so she smirked ever so darkly. "You go."
"What?!"
"Maybe you care more when you see." The second he saw the tears in her eyes he caught just how badly he hurt her feelings, no, he hadn't really taken into consideration what Underground prisoners meant to her.
She was right, she was one of them at one time or another.
"Sage..." He attempted to soothe her worries, to apologize, but it had been the same hand in which he grabbed her with and she recoiled.
"You care because I'm angry, go call Birdie." She said, storming back into the house with a slam of the door.
Which soon followed Remus' groan to the goddess, yep, he was fucked.
"Sir?" Blake called out, rubbing the side of his mouth from what he threw up from his dinner. "You alright?"
"Y-yeah, I'll be fine...I'd like to volunteer to go. Sage showed me what she saw, an 18-wheeler—Probably has one or two cars trailing it to be on the safe side." Remus nodded through this information but then mumbled his own appreciation of him not taking Sage off pack grounds.
Even if he was disobeying his Luna's orders.
It hadn't even been ten minutes before forty-five men and women were accounted for, so he prepared them as best he could in terms of what could be expected. As well as the fact that there would be witches in their midst.
A few SUVs had been summoned, and with both Blake and Remus going, it was Eli who had been decided to stay. And the anger that was felt the second a wolf entered the Alpha's house caused them to choke.
Munchkin, I know you're angry with me and I'm sorry. I told you before if there was anything to keep you safe I am going to do it against your better judgment. You aren't allowed to leave the pack grounds this pregnant, I didn't think I'd have to tell you that rule. But I cannot forgive you so easily at the attempt of putting yourself and the pup in harm's way.
Remus hadn't been separated from their bond, he could still feel her—Goddess, he could feel the rumbling anger and torment through her emotions that she tugged the bond.
The same as giving a kiss.
Stay safe. Kill scientists. Take everything, computer too.
He was surely going to do that and more, and while they went off in the direction Blake instructed to, Remus called Aurelia in return and they met in a nearby park.
The wolves were not at all strangers to the feeling, but it was easier to spread out and enact their senses. Yet the issue was that they were not at all prepared to be in the presence of a vampire.
Remus had to bite back all racists remarks his father embedded into him since birth, and instead thanked Enzo for being present. As he is mated to Raven's sister, Rebekah, and thus he had a place in either his coven or her aunt's.
In addition to this, Jack greeted the younger witch who worked at the store at the mall with a brief head nod.
There was a bit of skepticism in the air, that the Luna's visions were false—that she was that the mercy of her drastic hormones and created this all on her own. Course they didn't voice it out loud.
But Remus couldn't take back the fact that Blake had thrown up at the sight they were about to see, and they hardly had to wait that much longer for Sage's dream to enact—As this road soon welcomed the exact eighteen-wheeler, and Blake gave his Alpha the confirmation of the vision.
And thus, Enzo had jumped on top of the moving vehicle and compelled the drives to act as though a tire was out. Making the job much easier in the long run for the collection of those around them.
Blake was right, there were other cars at the ready to protect the 'goods' they were transporting. But it made them all huddle in one small bundle.
Aurelia smirked, they had more supernatural warriors than the pathetic group of humans can muster, but Blake growled in warning before shifting nude beside the coven leader.
"This your first time with scientists, ma'am?"
"Yes. Any suggestions?"
"There's no reason to keep them alive, kill them without hesitation," Remus growled as he nicked Blake to shift back to fur, he needed those with him at the ready when the orders were falling in.
Enzo could only hold them for so long, and a plan was decided—The two that had come out of the truck itself had been knocked unconscious quite easily, while the others had been subdued and cornered.
Clearly shocked that there were any issues to begin with, they were only thankful that they had a telepath on their side. The witch was quick to defuse any helpful information as Remus asked the questions.
Yet it was the moment of truth...Was it as awful as Sage and Blake made it out to be?
Remus had dressed right beside Blake and Jack, while the witches removed the human locks and rise up the metal door.
"Sweet goddess have mercy on us." Remus hadn't a clue who fell out of fur and spoke first, but he finally understood why Blake had been sick to his stomach.
Goddess, even he felt sick to his stomach.
It was Aurelia who had risen at the help of Enzo as they scoped through the bunk lined every square inch of the trunk and more.
"Witches and wolves, you were right, Blake. They're in stasis, they're alive. We'll have to be careful in moving them." Remus felt weak in his chest, he hadn't a clue what could've been in this truck—And it passed off so well, so human-like.
But it was the most inhumane thing of them all.
"We're closer to pack lands, we'll call ahead and have the infirmary ready them all. How many—"
"More than forty." Remus let out a steady breath, realizing that Sage was a hundred and ten percent right. That he wouldn't understand until it was sitting right there in front of him.
"How long can Enzo keep those two unconscious for?"
"Oh, I'm good for another day—These two are just drivers. The rest, however, they smell horrid." Blake had caught what the Vamp had said and kneed down to sniff both them and their armor.
"Look, we can do this at home. Disable any trackers—Let them think they're still moving in the right direction. Let's get a move on." But it was Blake who shook his head.
"They have trackers on them, sir. We have to disable those too." Rebekah had joined her mother in the truck, but it was clear that they couldn't go through and do a rundown of who was here, they'd have to wait.
Instead, she went to the first wolf closest to the door and felt down the length of their arm. "You're right, would there be only one?" Blake shrugged, there was no telling what the new tech could entail.
So it brought both techies from the wolf and witch side to send an EMP wave to disengage them for a short time before they reboot. Remus took the front seat with one of the drivers right beside Jack, it felt like a new world of pain had finally introduced itself, the hell his mate came from.
"Blake told me that you yelled at Sage about—"
"Quiet."
"Sir—"
"I said quite, Jackson." Remus couldn't voice what he was feeling, he was the Alpha after all. He couldn't show the fear he felt inside, the burning sensation deep in his chest as his wolves and the witches followed him home.
"Eli? We're on the way home, Alpha wants all the healers at the ready—We have about forty or—"
"Luna already has the entire infirmary ready, sounds like we'll need to prep more beds." Remus leaned further back into the seat, realizing that Sage hadn't stayed home either.
She hadn't stayed home and was moving with a vengeance to make things right with those returning to their society from the Underground.
