Chapter 2

For a brief second James's body was filled with pain before everything relaxed. He was surrounded by darkness and whispers, yet he was unable to open his eyes.

He was floating through a thick mist and when he was able to open his eyes, he was drifting on murky water in a small wooden canoe.

He looked around in distress before he saw some of his fellow students drift nearby. The canoes al gathered together, before slowly sinking. The people panicked, not knowing what to do.

"What's happening?!"

"I can't swim!"

They began to yell and scream in terror. But when their body can in contact with the water, it solidified but somehow the boats still sinked and the water still moved, like a liquid.

They all gasped when they realized they were now walking on water. There were huge rocks floating it the air, connected to each other by dead vines.

People began cheering when they saw each other, knowing they are not alone here. Others were crying because they would never see their families again.

Only then did James realize, not everyone was here... Not everyone from the school trip was here, but instead some of the other passengers that was aboard the plane. Making them roughly over 72 people.

The fog slowly began moving, swirling around them when the water they stood upon began thrashing around restlessly.

Most of the people lost their balance and fell while others—the high school boys— took surfing positions by stretching their arms out and leaning side to side.

Some water in front of them lift itself into the air, taking the form of a hand reaching into the skys above. Later followed by an arm which pulled its body out from the depths of the lake.

It stood up from its crouching position and covered its shapeless face with his hand before speaking, "I am the one who brought you here from the realm of reincarnation" his voice consists of many voices, some were women's and others were that of men.

They echoed as if it bounced off of walls, it sounded hollow yet somehow held power and authority over the people before him. It made his superiority clear to those that bore witnesses to it. The souls fell silent as they took in the figure towering above them. The water which formed they body flowed in contrast with the water of lake and never kept a stable form. With every movement he he made droplets would fled back to the lake allowing new ones to take their place.

"Wait! Who are you?" a girl asked a bit frightened. He stopped glanced toward the side and answered, "My name is Brandus, I am the god of fate and destiny".

"W-why are we here?" a desperate man with shaking legs yelled as he tried to make sense of what was happening. The body of water turned his attention to the cowering man, "Yell in my realm one more time and I will throw you out to rot in the land of no return. This is a place of peace and order, I'd appreciate it if you didn't make such a ruckus. Do we have an understanding?" as he said that the waters beneath them began to calm to an extent as if obeying his words.

The man—now paler than ever— nodded rapidly. Brandus sighed before lifting his head and stretching out his hands toward them.

"It's been several years since something interesting happened and I am bored so bugger it" he answered lazily.

"Really?" the same man answered, tilting his head in confusion. Brandus dropped what he was doing and shot his head in the man's direction.

"No you moron, I have my reasons why I brought you here. I'm merely doing this to restore the order of the land that has been rudely disrupted. For every soul that has been taken, another shall take upon its role"

He cleared his throat, "As you are not originally from this land, I don't have permission to take your memories from you so you must venture forth with them. Now, halt and step forward as I call upon your names. Stan Nobody" a small boy walked forward forward, playing with his hands nervously.

Brandus swiped his hand in the air and a screen-like hologram appeared in front of him. Is was covered in symbols that looked to be more complex than hieroglyphics, twisting and turning in all directions.

He scrolled down on it and tipped numerous foreign words and numbers. The screen started glowing yellow, blue and purple. Brandus look up from the screen and stared at the boy before breaking the silence, "In this new life that I'm granting you, each of you will be gifted magic as a means of both survival and becoming one with this world"

Silent gasps of surprise and excitement came from the crowd as they realized what was to happen with them.

"Stan Nobody, I give you the power of the wind attribute, the title of 'sky hawk' and a great destiny. And a bunch of other stuff... Now go" the boy called Stan was engulfed by a golden light and faded away.

"Next is..." Brandus continued for the next 40 souls before he called James forward. James smiled slightly, knowing that he would receive something precious, a new life, a new family and a new story. One free from pain and loss, a blank page. He released a breath he didn't know he was holding and stepped forward.

"James O'Neil I gift you—" Brandus cut himself off and quickly re-read the line. James started to panic, not knowing what's wrong.

Brandus lift his free arm into the air summoning a water wall and separating them from everyone else. He did this to give them some 'privacy'.

Brandus scoffed, "It seems there's a slight error" he explains "You see, I have no data about you here" he continued to look over the symbols with great care.

"I-is that bad?" James managed to ask feeling his pulse quicken. Brandus nodded, "Which means, your not supposed to be here" the body lift its head as if to glare at the boy. "Tis not to my knowledge how you got here, but what's done is done. I'm afraid you're going to have to be reincarnated into Tuta, powerless" he swiped his arm and James slowly became engulfed by a golden light.

Out of a desperate attempt he fell to his knees and let his mouth run free, "Please! Every day a person dies and I'm sure so does the people of Tuta! Can't you give the magic of a dying person to me instead?"

"How dare you voice those words! Robbing someone of their magic is the gravest sin that not even the gods dare commit! Magic makes up a part of the holder's soul and truly connects them to their world. If it was taken from them they would no longer belong and slowly fade from life, not even leaving behind a soul. And even if it they'd survived, the holder's magic differs from the rest. Not once in my lifetime have I seen someone with a similar magic potential" Brandus declared with anger evident in his voice. Even the waters began becoming restless. To think that such a disrespectful soul would propose such a thing.

"And no, I can't just make you some new ones. Magic never leaves the land, it  only dwells until the land crafts anew for its new children".

The wall behind them collapsed, retreating back to its original form. "Please! You can't just let me go without anything! What kind of cruel god are you to just kick me out without a care when I don't even belong!" James yelled as he turned pale. This can't be happening. Wouldn't he die immediately after being reborn without magic? After all he had nothing bonding him with the world so he'd obviously perish.

"Silence! You are a fool to believe that I won't show you my wrath!" his voice roared and the waters thrashed aroundonce more. The realm began to rumble and little pieces of stone fell from the boulders onto the water. "I Brandus, the god of fate and destiny, one of the twelve gods, hereby use my name and power to insure that fate will be cruel to you!" James could feel his body slowly began fading away as the body spoke.

His vision began to get blurry from the tears in his eyes. He was about to experience a much more worse life than his previous one, one where he wouldn't even live past day one. He began questioning himself, why did I leave? If I didn't, this would have never happened! What did I do to deserve this?

"I hereby strip your soul of any destiny, leaving you vulnerable! Let this be a—" he was cut off by the sound of footsteps booming behind them.

James noticed and turned his head, to his surprise it was the boy from the plane running towards him. His face revealed that he had heard Brandus's angered tone. He came to a stop but a few feet behind James. Out of breath he kneeled with his head to the water, "Please Brandus, god of Fate and Destiny, one amongst the mighty twelve. I'm not sure what this boy did wrong but please spared him! He didn't mean it I swear. Please take this stupid follower's word for it" James's eyes where wide with disbelief. This boy... is defending him? But why?

The body of water didn't move, it was as if he was thinking about his next course of action. At last he spoke, "You are a brave but foolish soul. Yet I have thought about your bold words and will gift this worthless being my mercy. Although I curse you with no destiny, I will let Tuta itself decide what is to become of you" relief washed over James before his vision was taken from him.
