MORDECAI

SYNOPSIS - Mordecai x gn reader, but you have a crime family

(m/f/o= mother/father/other)

"We ran out of coffee, Y/N."

You glanced up from the morning newspaper, meeting Mordecai's sour just-woke-up expression. Today's paper was filled with the usual talk - politics, crime, the whole shebang. It was better used to soak up spilled beverages rather than something to read.

In fact, that was exactly what it had been used for.

"Nancy." You explained, pointing at the mess of soppy newspaper and coffee puddles, "She must've drained a cup and a half herself to turn into the little tornado that crashed into the table and knocked the pot over."

"Mm. Morning people. Where did she get those genes" said Mordecai with an expression as close to hilarity as he could get.

You smiled.

It was six in the morning. The sun was out already, snaking through the curtains and stabbing at your eyes. Mordecai wasn't a fan - he'd replaced the curtains several times over during your marriage, trying to get them as dark as possible, and hissed every time light so much as peeped through the fabric. A few years ago, you wouldn't have minded. But it seemed that Mordecai had begun to rub off on you.

Nancy - the little tortoiseshell that had caused all the trouble - came stomping back into the living room.
"It wasn't my fault!" She pouted. Barely the height of a small pony, she had to stand on her tip toes to get your attention. "Joey was being a menace and was chasing me and I was sooo scared and-" She waved her paws dramatically.

"Joseph!" You snapped. Joey, his dark brown fur still puffy from sleep, merely shrugged.

"I wasn't." He said simply. Then he went back to smoking his cigarette.

"I won't allow you to operate the vehicle if you keep up with that attitude." Mordecai put in. He went ignored. Despite what one might imagine, being strict with the children wasn't really Mordecai's strong suit. He often sounded too fed-up to be taken seriously.

"We using the car today?" You questioned, flopping into an armchair. Mordecai answered with a kiss on your cheek and a fresh cup of tea placed into your paws.

"The same girl. She's requested for another one of her associates to be... taken care of."

You tested the tea - it was hot. "Good grief. At least she keeps the money flow steady." As dark as that was, it was true, and her frequent murderous requests meant you could afford to spend the evening in a fancy restaurant if you wished.

"Does that mean I can use the gun?" Nancy squealed with excitement, "Come on, Joey gets the car and I get the bang. It's only fair."

You opened your mouth to argue, but Mordecai lay his paw on his thigh and brushed his lips over your own. It was one of the more effective ways to keep you quiet - one that hadn't lost it's intensity throughout the all the years Mordecai had been your partner.

"You will have to start with game first, Nancy." He said through your fur, "Maybe a rabbit or two, nothing more. I'm glad you show interest in our work. You'll become a wonderful asset to the business." Mordecai broke away from you. The corners of his lips were quirked upwards - he'd enjoyed teasing you, however subtle it had been.

"Speaking of assets, it is your choice whether you accompany your m/f/o and I on this outing, Joseph. According to our client, the target will not be cooperative. I advise you stay behind."

Joey was far from pleased - angrily chewing on the end of his cigarette gave that clear away. "So what if it's a feisty bugger? I'm almost seventeen, and I've been practicing with m/f/o - they know how good I'm getting at hitting a shot."

Mordecai glanced down at you, his green eyes slits of emerald.

'Is that true?'
He didn't need to speak to ask. His gaze said everything for him.

You nodded.

"It's settled, then. You can come." Mordecai paused. "But you're not driving."

Mordecai smile as he watched Joseph's grin flash quickly back to a scowl.
