XXIV Flames
As Flo swooped down to catch Jillian's hand, the roar of treacherous waves started to fill the cliff's gap, engulfing Tritan with it. He would be taken back home to the sea of Gaia as he called it through his shell-like horn.
And due to Tritan's pointed spear, it was believed that it could hurt any enemies, besides scooping up the gills of the numerous schools of fish in the sea.
Once Leon heard news about the merman and his cold temperament, he wanted to see an ambush or a drowning at it's best.
But now the agony of defeat was written on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks, and Leon was discouraged as his first accomplice ruined his plans.
Thus, Leon failed, for annoying the son of a Greek God, which was was quite shameful.
With a smirk on his face, Tritan hollered to the elf, "Next time, don't call us, my father will call you!" He raised his large weapon toward Leon, laughed devilishly and disappeared in the blue lagoon.
A horrific scene, for him to observe, Leon gulped, as he knew he made the worst mistake of his life. He now learned that the seaman was never his friend!
His lesson - don't ever mess with a merman, especially one who has a father who has twice the power as Brutus! Messing with a Great Being of time was a serious risk, one where he could be struck by lightning!⚡
Leon's perception as that the nosy fairy just made things worse. He never liked Flo as she was irritating as a nosy aunt who butts in the affairs to save the 'children'.
She also reminded him of the day he met all of the creatures of Faerymore in a meeting with the old hag, Hyacinth. He had a hunch that something wasn't quite right that day since he paid attention to what was happening behind the scenes of a stupid lecture he didn't want to hear.
Not all of the fairies were attuned to their leader as they should have been. Glory's tardiness and Flo's wandering eyes meant something. A body language that screamed foul play.
And the unicorns neighed continuously, a sign of rebelliousness. How the fairy elder got bamboozled by these incidents was something he could not understand. But now he knew ... it was their plan that they were devising through their devious antics.
And of course, what Leon didn't know wouldn't hurt him. It was the cost of the life of a centaur; one who began the wrath of Brutus!
But now, the dark beast put everything in his hands and if he failed, it would be his 'disaster'!
But he had a hunch the end was near, so he placed the lucky gold bar that Brutus gave him in his pocket for good luck.
But little did Leon know that someone else was listening in. Someone whose destiny was to retaliate against Brutus and his never-ending shenanigans.
The rocky edge still gave way, when touched ... inch by inch ...thus, Jackson had to be careful not to lose his balance. But falling off the edge was the least of his worries, losing his sister to death was another!
Now placed on the ground, a worried Jackson ran to his sister's aid.
As a caring brother, he hugged her dearly. With sweat on his brow, Jackson let out a breath of relief. Meeting that awkward sea creature several minutes ago was quite awkward for him.
Another disadvantage in their mission like that would be disastrous, but Jackson was ready for anything ... anything evil that would prevent them from reaching their destination.
If not for Flo, Jillian would become toast, which was one of Brutus's elaborate plans. Jackson could just imagine how devastated that beast was and smirked as he knew they just defeated him. Thus, he kneeled on the ground and turned his head toward the pixie.
"Thank you, Flo, for helping us out. How can we ever repay you?"
And with that remark, Flo smiled at them, showing her pearly white teeth.
She made a commitment to finish what their mother asked her to do; she didn't intend to have them repay her for anything. In fact, she thought of the two as her own children.
However, she wanted the two to remain in the fairyland to keep her company but knew that wouldn't happen. It would be selfish of her to think of such a thing.
She didn't want to be greedy. Her duty was to guide them to the end of the maze and into the warp zone and nothing more. Yet, something still stirred in her mind as if at the end of this whole mess, ... maybe ... there would be a chance that her wish would be granted.
So in reply to Jackson's comment, she smiled. "No need to my dear, boy. Your mother's wishes are what I'm here for ... to help you leave this place! Now, enough of this chitchat we must continue on if we want to get to your destination!"
She then put her hands together and made a clapping noise indicating that they must march on.
They continued walking through the grassy area while the conniving elf followed the siblings, tiptoeing as silently as possible. By now the elf wanted to wring their necks for spoiling his plan but knowing that he was being watched, frightened him to do such a thing. Instead, he quietly muttered some obscenities to himself which only made him more agitated.
Then, he remembered who would be the next creature he planned to taunt the teens and soon he turned his frown upside down.
As the trio walked through the path with a fairy flying above them, they soon came to an edge where they abruptly stopped.
What lay before them, were two paths, one going right and another going left. Two forks in the road. Certainly a tough decision.
Jillian wanted to take the right, but her brother wanted the opposite, thus, a brief argument took place with lots of nonsensical commotion.
Meanwhile, a sleazy elf was smiling wide as he enjoyed the bickering going on. It was what he wanted because it could distract them from figuring out how to defeat the next beast once again.
As the siblings finally decided to go their separate ways to see where each path might take them, a one-eyed fierce giant was waiting for his victims. He was big enough to withstand two roads, so both siblings, the fairy and the perpetrator would meet him no matter what path they took.
A Cyclops is a better name for it. His name was Mort. Short for Morton Salt. A name that didn't define him, for he was supposed to be tough, not weak. But blame on his late mother, Mrs. Salt for naming her son that way.
So, again what Leon didn't know wouldn't hurt him, until the end!
Height is not everything, but the elf was engulfed deep into his plans, that he did not notice the difference.
In fact, in the beginning, he just took one look at the giant and was already satisfied with his choice. He didn't even take the time to interview him! But personality wise, Mort lacked one thing ... being mean. As a cowardly Lion, Mort was tall. His height said it all. He was a jolly green giant with a kind heart and wouldn't even heart a flea!
But now as the group approached him, Mort was put to the test!
A tear of sorrow now dropped from Mort's eye, for what he was about to say next was scripted. He didn't really have a choice now on what to do, for Brutus threatened to hurt his mother.
Leon let in a big breathe in his stomach, and prayed that Mort wouldn't let him down.
And so another riddle was given.
A loud voice sounded as if it were an amplifier that made the teenagers jump and fear what was ahead.
"I am not alive but may seem so, because I dance and breathe without any legs or lungs of my own. What am I?"
Again, the dumbfounded children were clueless and the fairy refused to say anything for she knew the outcome. And sadly, they learned what the answer would be.
For a flame 🔥out of nowhere started to flicker.
Jillian first noticed the gaseous part of the fire spark on a rock and felt the warmth coming upon her.
"Oh, it's starting to get hot in here, Brother! Quick, we need water to put it out!"
Jackson turned around and tried to do something for protection, but since the flames drew nearer, he too couldn't do anything but flash the pendant that was given to him. Thus, he could only shout.
"Help, us!"
Out of nowhere, Flo was able to find a big pot and swooped up some water remaining in the trenches of Tritan's escape.
"Put out the fire! Hurry, Flo!"
By now the eyes of the flame-engulfed around the teenagers as Leon laughed. He was satisfied with his plan and hid in the bushes.
However, Mort helped in scooping out the water.
He knew he was going to sacrifice his Mother's life for what he was about to do, but he couldn't watch the terrible episode play out!
