RIO STOOD INSIDE A PHONE BOOTH, punching in her father's phone number. She hadn't stopped thinking about her family during this whole intervention. The phone rang incessantly. She called again. This time a person picked up on the other line.
"Que carajo?" It was Gabriel, her dad's right hand; also her idiot older brother. A very stupid, young guy who didn't really know anything.
"Gabi, where's dad?"
"Rio?"
"No shit, idiot."
"He's out doing business, where you been?"
"Kidnapped. Kind of."
"What?!"
"Why else do you think I'd be gone?"
"I don't know, I assumed you left to see mom again."
"Dad didn't tell you?! Whatever, just tell him I'll call him back with this number whenever I get the chance," she hung the phone up, not wanting to hear Gabriel's annoying voice anymore.
Rio had been enrolled at Metropolis Academy, to her disappointment. She figured it was Batman's way of keeping her out of Gotham. To say it was easy would be a lie; it was annoying and preppy as hell. Superman stickers were plastered on lockers. Every kid stayed in the dormitories; and they all reeked of money. They did the extracurriculars, the sports, they all went out for coffee twice a day. There were the STEM kids, the arts kids, the humanities kids; all nerds and all rich.
Rio carried a single box with a few things her father had left at the police station for her. Her gold bracelets clinked as they hit the box. The sidewalks of Metropolis were pristine, another thing that started pissing her off. She stared up at the glass buildings in front of her before pressing her back against the door and walking in.
"You're late,"
"So?"
The woman handed her a thin sheet of paper, "do you have a legal guardian with you?"
"Bruce Wayne's a little busy right now," she gave her a snotty look, but the name got her to shut up as she read the paper. Obviously Batman falsified a shit ton of documents to get me in here. The woman looked at the girl. She did look rich. The gold earrings and necklaces. Her teeth were white and perfectly straight. The cartel life was profitable enough. The uniform was fine pressed and crinkled in the right places, so you knew it had not been worn before; thanks to the likes of Bruce Wayne.
Rio forced a large, fake smile, leaving the woman with no further comment.
A door slid open, and Rio was met with the chaos of a high school hallway. It would have been like any other high school hallway, if not for the fact every girl wore a pair of heels, all the uniforms were individually fit, and the conversations were amusing to say the least.
"My mom is making me go to Italy this summer, again."
"Girl, I'm so sorry."
"If you could vote, who would you vote for?"
"My dad wants Donald Trump to run.'"
"My parents said I can't go. I'm grounded."
"Just tell them no."
Rio observed every person she walked past, paying attention to their demeanor, conversations, tone of voice. She could feel a few people glance at her, more boys than girls. Her uniform fit a little too much. It made her skin crawl at the thought, and her mind cursed Bruce Wayne for sizing the uniforms without her input.
Rio, blinded by her anger for a split moment, lost track of her spatial awareness and ran into what felt like a brick wall. She made a few incoherent noises, mostly disfigured curses, as her box fell to the ground. Her eyes attempted to identify whatever it was she had slammed her body into in the middle of the hallway on her first day of school. Getting ready to spit curses at whoever it was, her brain momentarily decided to stop functioning.
She was like a god. Her black waves sat perfectly on her shoulders. Her red tie was perched tightly between her collar, her red and gray plaid skirt was at the part of her thigh that made boys stare. And, besides the fact the girl was several inches taller than her counterpart, the muscles of her arms were defined enough that you could see them through the white of her button up shirt.
"I am so sorry," the girl rushed, picking up the random articles of clothing and jewelry that fell out of the cardboard box.
Rio blew her bangs out of her line of sight. She wanted to be mad at the girl, but she couldn't find it in herself to be, "it's fine."
"I absolutely love your hair," the girl said, grinning so wide you could see both her dimples. Her lips were a tan pink and her teeth were pearly white, both complementing the olive tone of her skin.
Rio's brows raised as her lips met awkwardly, one hand grabbing onto a strand of her hair, her eyes daring to express the uncaring glance she gave the girl, "oh uh, thanks."
"No problem, again sorry I literally trashed the floor with your stuff," the girl had a confident smile, forcing Rio to scramble to find a better response.
"It's fine," Rio now restored her plain expression, walking past the girl as if nothing had happened.
A few girls whispered across from where the two had bumped into each other. Rio stuck her chin up to them. Something began to tinge the back of her neck. She slapped at the skin, receiving a few stares. But the tinging spread through her body. It was an insatiable itch that she had never experienced before. She turned into a bathroom, slamming the door behind her. The girls that stood at the mirrors gave her a look before quickly shuffling out of the room. Rio walked into a stall, sitting herself down before leaning her head on the wall behind.
She stared at her wrist device, an image of Batman popping onto the screen.
Have a good first day of school.
She grimaced. Almost a growl if you were close enough to hear it.
Fuck you.
Rio had a lot of time in her classes to think about the state of her life. She had left her stuff in her dormitory, which her roommate had already occupied and mildly decorated much to Rio's displeasure. Each period dragged on incessantly to the point that Rio started fantasizing ways to escape out of the situation she was in. But no method she could come up with would keep her family safe. And that was enough for her to put the ideas to rest.
"Hey," a girl with dark black hair looked up from reading a comic book on her bunk. Rio had finally finished her day and was mentally preparing for a call from Batman at any moment as she returned to her room.
You? Rio cocked her head before shrugging and attempting to ignore the fact that the girl she bumped into earlier was on her bed, "uh hi."
"Oh it's you!" She sat up, crossing her legs together, "again, sorry about earlier. It took you long enough to arrive, family keep you?"
"You could say that," Rio scanned the room, reanalyzing the cute minimalist decorations and little succulents, "top bunk free?"
"All yours," she leaned back, folding through a Superman comic book, "name is Donna Troy by the way."
"Um, Rio," she nodded her head at her before setting her boxes down, no use to keep a fake name if her name is plastered on her ID. She grabbed the rail to her bed and practically flew onto the top. Donna's eyebrow raised, a trickle of a suspicion flooding her thoughts, but she went back to her comic.
This is going to be absolute dogshit.
The two sat in awkward silence for a solid few moments, Rio shuffling uncomfortably on her bed as she debated what to do next. Donna also shuffled restlessly. The curiosity in her was itching her more than suspected.
Thankfully, a crashing was heard right outside their dorm. Donna stood up to look at the window before turning to her roommate on the top bunk, "uh looks like something crazy is going on. I'll be right back, don't move."
Rio watched as the girl disappeared before jumping down from the bed to look out the window herself. Two giant figures seemed to be battling. Alright well if i have to do this superhero shit might as well have fun with it. She opened up the bottom of one of her boxes, which held a case that compressed two superhero suits. Batman had given them to her after their night mission.
The first suit was rose red and black, the black parts of the suit being a kevlar material while the red was titanium. It had long sleeves that had gloves attached, the fingers of the gloves being lined with titanium. The suit covered up to a fourth of her thigh, like a pair of shorts. The mask was a black cat-mask that only covered the upper half of her face, and had intricate red designs drawn into it. The second was all black latex and kevlar, and on the sides plates of rose gold titanium were designed into it. But it was sleeveless and ended at the same fourth of her thigh position that the other did. It had a matching rose gold utility belt, and matching gloves that reached to her elbow and had titanium at the wrists. The mask was a simple domino mask. It also had a rose gold choker that was attached to a cape. Both suits had a pair of matching boots that went up to her knee.
She ignored the black cape. Capes are ridiculous.
"Why do I have two?"
"One for the team, and one when you're working with me."
"That doesn't really answer my question but okay."
"Most of your missions with the team are related to threats outside of your usual; aliens, magic, international missions and such. You need a suit more designed to counter the fact you have no superpowers. But in Gotham, you need something that's more flexible and bends into the night. In simple terms: with the team, you're a superhero; with me, you're a vigilante. "
"How'd you get my measurements?"
"I have a scanning device, and knowing your strengths and weaknesses, I submitted a basic outline and the machine designed it."
Rio grabbed the team mission suit from the box in her closet. It was difficult to get on. Their room was on the fifth floor of the brick dormitory. She jumped down, her feet touching the pavement where she faced her roommate in a black suit with silver stars.
Donna's eyes widened, immediately recognizing her roommate, "um, I do cosplay?"
"Donna!" A voice spoke from beyond the short alley, they both turned their heads, "OH, um, I mean, Troia.
A man with orange hair and a bit of unkempt facial hair came running towards the two.
"Ro- Red Arrow?! What the hell are you doing in Metro-"
The three jumped to the sides of the alley as a large figure was thrown into it. They gave each other a look before staring at the being that was twice the size of the three of them combined.
"WHERE'S ELIAS?!"
"You've got to be fucking kidding me," Rio rolled her eyes from under her mask. It was Bruno Mannheim, better known as 'Ugly'. A major crime lord. Rio had tried to kill him once.
Donna, or Troia, cracked her knuckles, "you guys ready?"
"Okay, well, I don't know what the hell arrows are going to do to a cyborg monster thing and a man in a Transformers costume, but hell, I can try," Roy shot at the man, doing, inherently, nothing. He was already starting to piss Rio off.
"Stay out of this, kids," a blast from the super-suit was sent their way.
Rio thought about walking away from the situation, but Donna looked at her with enthusiasm, "we can talk about this later. But right now, let's kick ass."
"I'm so not 'kicking ass' with-" Rio started as another blast was sent their way, pushing them all against the wall again as the being at the end of the alley groaned.
The figure stood up, being about two feet taller than Rio. And two feet wider. Rio smirked, "listen big guy, I don't want to hurt you."
He let out an unintelligible noise, swinging his arms towards the girl. She dodged, smiling as she did so before throwing herself at him, her legs wrapping around his half-man, half-cyborg neck. He was terrifying to say the least, with teeth all sharpened like shark teeth, and retractable claws that kept retracting with every blow. Meaning, if you weren't careful, hit him wrong and you were hanging from a fingernail. He was not human. This was a full on cyborg made to look like a beast.
Rio knew she could not win this. In his rage, she was being tossed around on the upper half of his body as her legs remained clasped around his neck. Her stomach tossed as her head flew back and forth.
"Alright you big freak, lets see what you got," the voice of Donna Troy could be heard above Rio. She looked up, surprised to see her roommate floating in the air. Donna weakly smiled at Rio, "please don't hate me."
Next second Rio found herself on the floor of the alleyway, with Donna fully lunging at the cyborg beast. Even though there was so much force in every motion she made, there was an elegance that Rio knew not even she could achieve. This was royalty. This was a goddess.
"She's pretty cool, isn't she?" The man who went by Red Arrow stood with his arms crossed next to Rio, his eyes entirely focused on the girl in front of them who was attempting to fight a ten foot cyborg.
"And who are you? Her sidekick?" Rio stood up, her body vibrating as the cyborg and Donna continued to fight.
Roy scrunched his nose, stepping back in disbelief, "and who the fuck are you?! Don't tell me you're one of his."
"Suck it up, sidekick, we have bigger fish to fry," Rio nodded to Ugly, who was recovering from his last wound by the mammoth-equivalent cyborg.
Ugly's suit made him about nine feet tall, and was enhanced by various weaponry he had attached to him. He had finally noticed the two teenagers standing at his feet as his vision readjusted, "stay out of this kids, you're next."
"Sorry bud, can't do that," Red Arrow cracked his knuckles, as if he was about to do something really cool. Rio was already bored of this fight.
"Don't worry kids, I can handle this," a voice from the heavens came down, booming, and winds passed through the hair of all three.
"Superman!" Donna Tory shouted from her spot in the Alley, her arm currently holding back one of the cyborg's arms as the claw of his other arm reached out for her.
"Superman," Rio grumbled.
Donna Troy, Red Arrow (Rio had not figured out his name yet), and Rio all sat in the alley as they watched Superman defeat both the cyborg and the gang leader. Apparently there was some involvement with a mad scientist, but Rio got bored halfway through Donna's story. They sat against the wall like children in timeout, and much to their surprise they were. It was not long after Superman's arrival that the Batmobile pulled up and the Bat walked out, along with the very much annoyed Nightwing. The duo approached the trio as the three stood up to face them.
Batman's disappointment reeked off of him as if he had forgotten to clean his suit. Rio crossed her arms, leaning to the side, "what? You mad I can fight the bad guys without you?"
"Donna you know better than this," Nightwing turned to his best friend, before pointing accusingly at Red Arrow, "and you, this isn't even in your jurisdiction."
"Who stuck a stick up your ass? Batman?" Rio's eyes rolled as the four watched her, her two accomplices hiding their laughter. Instead of sticking around, she walked past Nightwing and Batman, stopping for a moment to sneer at the boy.
"Felina," Batman's voice boomed.
She flipped him off.
